Cards defeat Bulls 66-55

REID'S 27 LEAD CARDS TO WIN ON ROAD
Getting 27 points from Monique Reid, The Lady Cards take a win in Tampa on Saturday afternoon in the Sun Dome against USF. Louisville (17-10, 8-5). shot 50% for the game and got four 3-pointers from Shoni Schimmel...who finished with 16 points.

Louisville and South Florida battled back and forth early in the first half, with the teams tied at 9-9 halfway through the first half. The Cards used a 10-2 run to grab a 19-11 lead after a Becky Burke jumper with 8:19 left and then pushed the advantage out to 29-15 after a Schimmel three with 2:58 remaining. USF dominated the final three minutes of action, though, and a 8-1 run cut it to 30-23 at halftime.

Louisville shot 52% in the first twenty minutes...Schimmel burying all four of her game high 3 pointers and leading all scorers with twelve points. Only four Cards scored in the first half...Reid adding eight and Burke and Keisha Hines with five each. Louisville got good production out of Reid and Hines inside and held USF leading scorer Andrea Smith to just eight points.

The Bulls cut the Cardinal lead to 32-27 early in the final half after a Jasmine Wynn jumper but the Cards responded with eleven Reid points to push the advantage out to 43-32. After another Reid score to make it 47-36, USF made one final push at the Cards and narrowed the margin to 49-43 when Jenetta McDonald capitalized on an old-fashioned 3 point play. The Lady Cards rallied back with a 9-2 run, beginning with a Tia Gibbs 3 and led 58-45 after Reid scored again inside with a little less than seven minutes remaining in the game. Smith got the Bulls within nine late..but Schimmel pushed the final margin to eleven at 66-55 with under a minute to go. USF chose not to foul or press the rest of the way and Louisville did not force the offense.

50% shooting for the Cards in the win. 18 turnovers for Louisville but a 22-14 advantage in points off of turnovers was a key to the win. USF out rebounded the Cards 38-27. Shoni Schimmel recorded nine assists, narrowly missing a double-double.

Cardinal scoring had Reid 27, Schimmel 16, Hines 11, Gibbs 5, Burke 5 and Shelby Harper 2. Asia Taylor, Sherrone Vails and Antonita Slaughter also played for Louisville. For USF, Andrea Smith ended wth 16 points, her twin sister Andrell finished with eight and Jasmine Wynne knocked down 12.

Today was Jim Kelch's final road broadcast of the season. Matt Andrews will cover the final Cardinal road game of the year at Providence...as Kelch heads off to do spring baseball broadcasts for the Cincinnati Reds after the DePaul game in the KFC YUM Center on Wednesday . Hopefully, the affable play-by-play guy will return to the microphone next year...

You knew a Dee Kanter officiating crew would slow this one down with their whistles and they did...one USF player fouled out, three had 4 each and Hines got whistled for four personals.
WE'LL look at some more numbers and have comments from head coach Jeff Walz tomorrow in the Sunday edition of CARDINAL COUPLE.
