For Slaughter, it's a family tradition...

Is Louisville womens' basketball signee ANTONITA SLAUGHER contemplating playing this stone wall one on one? If so, the wall doesn't stand a chance...

For Antonita Slaughter, going to college is a big acheivement but hardly anything new for the family.

Older sister Toni paved the way originally...leaving Shelby County for Cincinnati and playing two years for the Bearcats before transferring to Louisville and spending the 2006-07 playing for Louisville and Tom Collen. Toni played on the same team as Angel McCoughtry and Jazz Covington and averaged four points as a reserve guard.

Next was older brother A.J. He turned his Shelby County successes into a four year career at Western Kentucky University. A.J. was a star for the Hilltoppers and averaged 17.5 points his senior year. He's ranked the 13th. best guard available in the upcoming NBA draft...not a guarantee to be selected but definitely a strong candidiate for European basketball if the NBA doesn't come calling.

It is Antonita's time in the spotlight now. She began her high school career playing at Shelby County as an eight grader but enrolled in Louisville's Christian Academy in the ninth grade. She immediately became the "go to" player and committed to Louisville prior to her sophomore year.

Slaughter is a slashing 6'2" wing who can beat you from outside or take you to the hoop and score effectively. Her long arm span makes her dangerous in the lanes as a defender and she has the height and skills to go to the boards effectively. Where she'll fit into Jeff Walz's scheme of things can't be etched into stone yet but we wouldn't be surprised to see her spell Monique Reid at the "3" next year and help out on the front line if needed. She has an all over the court game presence...which will serve her well in Walz's frentic defense and fast break philosophies.

Anymore like her at home, Mom?

Three Dog Night recorded the song "Never Been to Spain" back in the seventies, but UofL womens' golfer Laura Anderson probably wasn't singing it recently when she was in Malaga, Spain participating in the 2010 World University Games. She finished fifth overall in the event...helping the U.S. to a bronze metal finish. Anderson shot 304 over the four day event and finished strong with a final day 71. All this with a bad ankle, too.

Anderson is one of six returning players for the UofL womens' golf team next year. She'll be a senior, along with Sara-Maude Juneau. Maria Casellanos will be a junior, and the sophomore class features Candace Wiley, Anna-Karin Ljungstrom and Morgan McClure. Keep your head down and eye on the ball, ladies!
