It looks like Makayla Epps has committed to UK following her visit to the campus today. Epps is considered the best point guard in the 2013 Class in Kentucky and had previously verballed to Louisville.

( We've been previewing the UofL WBB squad the last couple of months and we've reached the sophomore class. First up for us, red-shirt sophomore forward Shawnta Dyer.) 

For Shawnta Dyer ( to borrow a line from Tom Petty) the waiting had to be the hardest part. Part of the heralded class of 2010, Dyer looked to be a freshman that could impact the Cardinal front line right off the bat and had a successful debut in the 2010 exhibition game against Indiana Wesleyan. 

Then, a fractured heel beset the Marion, OH star and brought an end to the season. A season of analyzing and critiquing certain areas of the game. Cheering from the sidelines as the Cards marched to the Sweet Sixteen. 

After a season of rehab and waiting, she returned to the 2011-12 Cardinal contingent and became the leading rebounder for UofL. An inside force that got plenty of chances to impact the Cardinal scoring and rebounding game inside with Monique Reid on the shelf for a year. 

Improvements for 2012-13? Dyer will tell you that she wants to become a better student of the game. That basketball isn't simply putting the ball in the basket, but strategizing and coming up with a game plan to outsmart the opponent. 

She's been busy over the summer working on her individual skills. Ball handling, jump shots, free throws. As part of a deep and experienced Cardinal squad, Dyer will be counted on to continue her inside scoring abilities and rebounding prowess on both ends of the court. 

Ask Shawnta about the team and you'll get this reply:

"We've been working hard this summer on our individual skills, taking classes and building on our team chemistry every chance we get. We are making improvements in the off season, not only to become better basketball players...but also to become better people." 

The 2012-13 season looks to be one where the Cards will make a huge run to dispose Notre Dame and Connecticut as front runners in the BIG EAST. Shawnta Dyer will be one of the prime components in an essential area...rebounding and inside scoring. 

Hoping to become an elementary teacher after her days as a Cardinal are finished, Dyer will be "schooling" opponents this season on the boards and in the paint. We think she'll continue to be at the head of the class.

Louisville Field Hockey captured their first win of the season Sunday with a 3-1 win over Miami (OH) in the consolation game of the Sherrill Brakemeier Classic at Trager Stadium. 

The Cards showed improvement in their passing, transferring and offensive attack...according to head coach Justine Sowry. 

UofL (1-1) opened the scoring in the first half when Erin Schneidtmiller netted her first goal of the season at the 9:22 mark. Louisville dominated the first half with a 12-0 advantage in shots. 

70 seconds into the second half, the Cards increased to lead to 2-0 when Becca Madock sent one past Miami goalie Sarah Mueller. Miami managed to cut the Cardinal lead in half a few minutes later, but Haley Jurich notched the Cards' third goal when she corralled a rebound from her first shot on goal and found success the second time around. 

Goalie Erin Conrad had two saves and Louisville outshot the RedHawks 20-6. 

The Cards take to the Trager Stadium turf again on Saturday when they host Davidson. They'll also face off against Ball State on Labor Day. Both are 2 p.m. starts.

Back in 1968, Merle Haggard wrote and performed a country classic called "Mama Tried". Hum or sing along if you remember it. Last night in the KFC YUM! Center, in front of a record volleyball crow of 4312, it was "Lola Tried" but the Cards could not defeat the Nittany Lions...going down in straight sets 25-20, 25-17, 25-18.

No Joe Paterno's or Jerry Sandusky's here. Just a demonstration of skill from superior players on the PSU squad and a learning experience for Anne Kordes' bunch.

It was an acid test, if you will, a chance to see how this highly heralded, BIG EAST top pick would do against a powerhouse, a perennial Final Four participant and a program that recruits and gets the best.

A contest that gave Louisville a look at the next level...as Penn State took the Cards out of their game and handed Louisville their first loss of the year. It also reinforced how important Lola Arslanbekova is to Louisville Volleyball...the senior recording a game high 18 kills. 

For her efforts, Lola was named to the All-Tournament team for the Cards, along with Caitlin Welch. 

The Cards face another tough opponent Wednesday night in the KFC YUM! in Kentucky.

Of the three matches that UofL Volleyball played this weekend, which does the team wish they could forget? Probably one of the wins.

UofL was victorious over Morehead State 25-21, 20-25, 25-17 25-16, but their play was not at the level that second year coach Anne Kordes would like to see. Maybe it was the early 11 a.m. start time...but the VolleyCards certainly didn't play aggressively in the first two sets. In the third set, freshman Katie George entered the game to take over the setting duties. That change of pace seemed to jolt the Cards into action. Hannah Kvitle and George split the time running the offense for the rest of the match and the team got the job done. 

The bright spot of the match was the defensive play of Caitlin Welch...who seemed to be digging everything in sight. Alli Miller also saw her first collegiate time and got the passing game going well...which got the offense on solid ground. 

Thankfully, the Kordes Krew didn't have long before they could redeem themselves, and redeem themselves they really did, even though that redemption ended up in a loss in the evening session of play against #3 Penn State.

After struggling in the Friday night match against WKU, Lola Arslanbekova returned to form with 18 kills. While her overall hitting was only .227, that's more credit to the Penn State great defense. Lola was swinging well and making opportunities. PSU's defense did a great job of handling many of the shots. The rest of the team also started to come together. With so many newcomers (Six freshmen and three transfers), this is a team that is still learning how to play together. 

In the first two matches against Western and Morehead, they were bumping into each other and watching balls drop to the floor...thinking the other play had it. A tell-tale sign of a team trying to jell. There really wasn't much of that in the Penn State match. The Cards played solid volleyball and started to show some coherence but they were just outplayed by a better opponent. 

Penn State is beatable, but not yet by this Cardinal team. If they meet again at the end of the season (could we dream that it would be on this very same floor in the FINAL FOUR in December?) the outcome might be different.

Despite the loss, there were encouraging signs that the high level of talent that Kordes has partially inherited and partially recruited can come together and play on equal terms with the nation's elite. 

More to come on Wednesday night when the preseason #13 Kentucky Wildcats motor across I-64 to the KFC YUM! Center. The in-state rivalry would make even a game of chess or bean bag toss between these two exciting. The Cards out for payback after last year's loss in Memorial Coliseum. Here's hoping it's the first of Cardinal wins against the Cats this week.

Saturday Cardinal Couple -- Soccer, Volleyball post wins Friday

A busy day for Cardinal women's sports Friday as three Cardinal squads were in action...all starting action within 90 minutes of each other. Here's the reports. 

Katie Walz boots home game winner over Purdue. 

A nice crowd of over 900 on hand for the soccer Cards win over Purdue...a hard-earned victory that went to double-overtime before Katie Walz took a Charlyn Corral pass and drove it into the net from 25 yards out for the win.

Louisville struck early in the contest, getting a goal from Angelika Uremovich just five minutes into the game. That lead held for 15 minutes until Purdue showed a brief spurt of offensive prowess and got two goals from Jordan Pawlik in the span of 45 second to take a 2-1 lead. Casey Whitfield found the net for UofL with just six minutes left in first half play to tie it 2-2. 

That's how the first half ended...Louisville narrowly outshooting the Boilermakers 7-6 and Chloe Kiefer with one save. 

The second half prove to be a defensive battle until Purdue captialized on a loose ball and found the net with just 7 1/2 minutes remaining in regulation. Angelika Uremovich countered for the Cards, though...taking a Charlyn Corral pass and sliding one by Purdue goalkeeper Clara Kridler to tie it with 4 1/2 minutes left in regulation. Neither team could score in the final 270 seconds and the teams went to extra time at 3-3. 

The first overtime saw both teams with chances to score but neither could capitalized in the 10 minute additional session. 

Louisville came out quickly in overtime two, though...Walz driving a shot from the right side of the field into the right corner of the net for the game winner.

Louisville outshot Purdue 14 to 3 in the second half and 4-0 in the overtime sessions. The Cards go to 2-0 on the season with the win.

Action was stopped for about 10 minutes in the second half when a power outage cause the stadium lights to go out. Attempts to play with an optic-yellow ball went on for a few minutes but play was halted again until replacement hamsters for the Cardinal Park generator could be located and purchased. 

Field Hockey falls short against Northeastern

It was a battle of top 25 teams in Trager Stadium in the first game of the Sherrill Brakemeier Classic but Louisville couldn't score in the second half against Northeastern and fell 3-2 in front of about 500 fans. 

Northeastern registered on the board first when Crystal Poland tapped in a penalty corner shot twenty minutes into the game but Louisville countered three minutes later when Haley Jurich tied the contest on an unassisted goal. The Cards forged ahead 2-1 when Amber Thomas took a corner pass from Alyssa Voelmle and found the net with just 100 seconds left in the first half...but Northeastern tied it on another score by Poland with only four seconds remaining in the half. 

The heat (93 degrees at game time) took a toll on both squads in the second half...Louisville playing solid defense but unable to find the net. Lindsey Bennett put in the game winner for Northeastern with sixteen minutes left in the game. 

Louisville returns to action on Sunday at 11 a.m. against the loser of the Northwestern vs. Miami (OH) game...which will be played Saturday at Trager. 

A birthday celebration, cake, naming of the locker room and video were part of the pre, post and halftime game activities for the 90th. birthday of Mrs. Brakemeier...a four-sport star for the Cards back in the 1940's. 

She was a complete doll in the press box, handing out candy to the media and marveling at the speed and quickness of today's field hockey. Happy Birthday, Mrs. B!

Volleyball defeats WKU 3-1 in Active Ankle Challenge. 

Gwen Rucker led Louisville with 16 kills and nine blocks against the Hilltoppers and Louisville downed WKU 25-20, 25-17, 26-28, 25-12 Friday night before a crowd of 2800+ in the KFC YUM! Center. 

Louisville had their hands full with the visitors in the first set, finally gaining a 15-14 lead and going on a 10-6 run to secure the first win. Lola Arslanbekova smashed five kills to lead the Cards to the victory.

The Cards jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the second set but WKU climbed within one at 11-10 before a 7-2 UofL run gave the Cards a six point advantage they would build on to go 2-0 on the evening. Rucker recorded seven kills in the set.

The third set was an exciting affair, WKU leading 17-14 late in the action...Louisville getting to set point with a 24-22 lead but watching the Hilltoppers go on a 6-2 run to get the the win. 

Louisville dominated action in the final set, and led 20-8 before coasting in for the win. 

Action resumes today with Louisville facing Morehead State at 11 a.m. and then #3 Penn State at 7:30 p.m.

Earlier in the day, Penn State swept Morehead 3-0.

If you're a University of Louisville women's sports fan (and would you be here if you weren't?) you've hit the trifecta this weekend. Volleyball plays three times over Friday and Saturday, field hockey gets in two matches on Friday and Sunday and soccer hosts Purdue Friday night. Any fan who attends all six contests deserves a medal of honor from Julie Hermann...Cardinal Couple will have reports on all six contests...so let's get to the preview essentials!

VOLLEYBALL

The Volley Cards take over the KFC YUM! Center Friday night and all day Saturday with three matches in the Active Ankle Challenge. First up are the WKU Hilltoppers at 7:30 p.m. Friday night. No pushover here, the 'Tops' were 31-4 last year and lost to Marquette in the NCAA Tournament. 

Make sure and go early if you're attending this one. They're will be an All-Sport Pre-Game Autograph Session where various student-athletes will be signing autographs in the Main Concourse of the KFC YUM! Center from 5:30-7:00 p.m. A free autograph poster will be distributed. Your chance to get your favorite UofL athletes on ink. UofL is asking that fans just bring one additional item to be signed. Can't have Jordan Trimble wearing out that rocket arm...

The Cards also face Morehead State Saturday at 11 a.m. and Penn State at 7 p.m. A busy weekend for Anne Kordes' net-blasters! 

FIELD HOCKEY

#23 in the nation Cardinal Field Hockey will open their 2012 season with the Sherrill Brakemeier Classic. The Cards first opponent is #21 Northeastern. A perennial C.A.A. power, the Huskies went 14-8 last season and return an all-conference goalie in Lizzie Priest. 

Louisville looked impressive in an exhibition against IU last weekend...getting a goal from freshmen Kendall Weeding and two from Victoria Stratton. Senior Erin Conrad had seven saves in the 3-0 scrimmage win. 

Game time is 6 p.m. Friday. The Cards will face either Northwestern or Miami (OH) on Sunday. Admission is free for all field hockey contest this weekend. 

SOCCER

#18 Louisville soccer hosts Purdue Friday night at 7 p.m. at Cardinal Park. The Cards enter the match off a 2-0 win at Butler last Friday. Casey Whitfield and Angelika Uremovich scored for the 'Ville" in the win. 

Chloe Kiefer notched her 11th career shutout at goalie for Louisville, aided by the strong Louisville defensive backfield. 

Purdue is 2-0 so far this season...with wins over Toledo and Eastern Illinois. 

Admission is free for the match and the first 200 fans entering the gates get a free Louisville Soccer t-shirt.

Thursday Cardinal Couple -- The Paulie sees all. Predictions on volleyball.

- "The Paulie" looks at UofL Voleyball.

I was asked recently how I thought the UofL Volleyball team would do this season. Taken back a bit...usually I get these questions about women's hoops and softball...I managed to piece together an answer that noted they were the BIG EAST favorites, that they had a few tough early season contests and that I expected them to win the BIG EAST again and advance a few rounds in the NCAA Tournament, since it was home court advantage for them. 

My quizzer, though, was not placated with the general answer. She continued by asking if they'd win 20 matches or not. The jig was up. I had to confess that I wasn't actually sure how many matches they had in the regular season. 

The encounter led me to doing some research on the season for Anne Kordes' players and opponents.  

In what may be the first ever prediction of its kind on the internet, I now bring you The Swami's...no, let's call it The Paulie's predictions for Volleyball this fall. Remember, these are coming from the same guy who gave you DULLAHAN as the Kentucky Derby winner and the Chicago Cubs as the World Series champs...so results may vary. 

LOUISVILLE VOLLEYBALL

The VolleyCards will participate in 28 matches before BIG EAST tournament play...and then a game against the OVC Champion after that (which I've never really figured out why)...so let's call it 29 games. Here's how The Paulie sees it. 

After wins against WKU and Morehead State, Louisville gets perennial power Penn State in the KFC YUM! This will be the Cards first loss of the season. 

Kentucky had Louisville's number last year...but this one this year is in the YUM! and Louisville gets by the Kitties this year. After that, Duke, Marshall and Samford should be wins at the YUM...then Louisville travels to Cincy for the BIG EAST/BIG TEN CHALLENGE. Big 10 Volleyball is always pretty decent, and Purdue and Illinois beat Louisville last year. Time for wide net revenge...and I'm calling for Cardinal wins in both matches. The Cards end the pre-conference slate with a weekend YUM! fest with MTSU, UNLV and Miami...which they should sweep. 

We'll predict that they're 11-1 going into BIG EAST play. 

Games against DePaul and Notre Dame in the YUM! will be battles...especially the Irish...but the crystal ball  deflated volleyball shows me two wins. The first conference road trip takes Louisville to USF and Pitt...they lose in Tampa but triumph in Steel City....ending September at 14-2.

October sees them with eight matches...the first three at home. I predict wins over Seton Hall and Rutgers...but a narrow loss to #2 preseason ranked Texas...the third match in three days for the VolleyCards. 

Five matches on the road close out October...and the Cards should prevail in New York, Storrs, Syracuse and Milwaukee. The Oct. 27th. match in Cincy against the Bearcats should be a doozy...Louisville narrowly escaping with the "W". The end of October sees Louisville with a 21-3 record. 

Four home matches greet the Cards in November before the BIG EAST Championships. Villanova, Georgetown and Marquette leave with losses. The Cincinnati Bearcats visit the YUM! on 11/11/12 and head back up I-71 with a "L" also. The Paulie sees Louisville at 25-3 going into BIG EAST Tournament play. 

Not sure, obviously, who the OVC Champ will be but Louisville should polish them off pretty easily before starting NCAA Tournament action.

So, there you have it.  

And, just in case anyone was wondering...72 days till women's basketball starts. (People always ask...)

This is a busy time in recruiting for basketball.  Many players are making official and unofficial visits.  It has come to my attention that two more players in the class of 2013 have scheduled official visits.  Both of these names are new to me as players involved with Louisville.  Both are guards who are said to be scorers on the wing. 

Both players will be taking their official visit with Louisville Sept. 7-9. 

Imani Wright is currently ranked #31 with Hoopgurlz and is a 5-11 guard who hails from Texas.    Hoopgurlz states that Wright “can create her own offense, best at scoring off of the dribble but can take it to the rim as well and has a knack for scoring in big moments. “ 

Brianna Ruiz is currently ranked #65 with Hoopgurlz and is a 5-10 guard who hails from California.  Ruiz as described by Hoopgurlz as a “versatile perimeter player with a deep range and scorer on the wing,  she has length and quickness and can get by defenders and in to the lane.”  She is described as a player that has a “nose for the ball”. 

As visits begin we wish Coach Walz and the program well as they shape the future of the Louisville Women’s Basketball.

RECRUITING JIGSAW PUZZLE

As has recently been announced on this site; prior to the November early signing period, we have several extremely high quality sought after 2013 recruits coming to campus for September and October official visits. Currently those with announced dates are Saniya Chong, Alexandria Harris, Emmonie Henderson and alphabetically last but certainly not least, Mercedes Russell.  In order to not be left behind we now have 2014 recruits checking out the facilities.  It is reported that in August Clinton Massey junior forward, Sydney Brackemyre (who is reported as having been made a scholarship offer by Jeff), will be here on an unofficial visit.  It is great to see the quality recruits who now recognize Louisville as a force to be dealt with and are here looking to determine where they could fit into its energy.  It is fascinating to see the national championship team Jeff is in the process of assembling.  He sees the shape, size and unique attributes of players needed to complete a one of a kind national championship jigsaw puzzle.   Jeff has now gone across the world seeking those players who look like they could fit into the remaining needed specific puzzle sections.

What is more remarkable is that I can see how each of these players, instead of competing with one another for corresponding positions, could instead fulfill our need for each of their unique talents with roles (double post anyone?) which include that of challenging the 2013 returning players to once again step up their own game as the challenge of the competition will cause them to dig deep into talents which had been unknown even to themselves.  Hopefully each of those coming to visit will determine it best to be on the side that others will have to deal with rather than facing off against us later at competing schools. Wonderful things are happening with Louisville WBB!

ESPN2’S MONDAY SHOWCASE TO FEATURE U OF L WOMEN

Unless you are able to travel to South Bend, IN on a Monday night in February to see the Louisville women beat Notre Dame...(and we certainly hope they will prevail over the Irish),

mark your calendars for Monday February 11 at 9:00 to watch the game be featured as part of “ESPN2’s Big Monday” and part of their “game-of-the-week series”.  This will be one of only10 games featured during the Monday night ESPN season.

THANKSGIVING TOURNAMENT UPDATE

Louisville’s competition in its Thanksgiving Hardwood Tournament of Hope played at Puerto Vallarta, Mexico includes UC Santa Barbara, Central Florida, Gonzaga, Mississippi State, Missouri State, Winthrop and Oregon State University.  All games of the November 20-22 tournament will be played at the Puerto Vallarta International Convention Center with fan packages apparently only available from the tournament organizer.

Phoenix Arizona mayor Greg Stanton was planning to use his attendance at the WNBA Phoenix Mercury practice as a photo op.  Things did not work out so well as while running drills with the practice squad, instead of coming down with a rebound against the Mercury's Nakia Sanford,   he instead left the practice with a broken nose.  He later indicated that he had a great time and injuries are just part of the battle wounds of the game.  He showed himself a good sport as he was quoted as saying, "My biggest mistake was thinking I could actually get a rebound".  At last report he was planning to attend the upcoming game.

The Big East Conference Field Hockey preseason coaches poll resulted in Louisville receiving the 3rd highest number of first-place votes and Erin Conrad, Dominique Pasqualichio and Alyssa Voelmie being chosen as preseason all-conference team.
