Katie George, Mariya Moore and Angel McCoughtry -- Monday Cardinal Couple

Sometimes we go from feast to famine in terms of news to report about UofL women's athletics here at CARDINAL COUPLE. Today...it's an all-you-can-eat buffet in terms of events that happened on Sunday.

KATIE GEORGE FINISHES 11TH. IN MISS USA PAGEANT

Louisville native and member of the Louisville Volleyball team Katie George survived two rounds in the Miss USA Pageant Sunday but wasn't selected to reach the final five in Baton Rouge.

George made the final 15 but was knocked out of the competition after the swimsuit competition. Voters took to the Internet to save her, however...and the social media and online voting got her back into the mix...boosting her into the 11th. and final spot in the next round.

Alas, she was not selected to reach the final five in the next elimination round. The contest was won by Miss Oklahoma Olivia Jordan.

Still, a great effort by the Louisville senior and overwhelming support for her on-line. A lot to be proud of in her representation of Kentucky in the pageant.

USA U 19 GETS 30 FROM WILSON IN 85-82 WIN OVER AUSTRALIA

Aja Wilson went a perfect 14-14 from the charity stripe, scored 30 points and the USA U 19 women's basketball team held on late to win by three in an exhibition game Sunday in Mercia, Spain.

Mariya Moore added 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists for the USA...who lead 79-69 with 3:50 to play, but saw Australia rally to make it 83-82 with 14 seconds remaining in the game.

Crystal Dangerfield was fouled by the Aussies with 10 seconds left and hit both to give the USA the three-point edge. Australia could not come up with a three to force overtime as time expired.

University of Louisville soon-to-be sophomore Moore started for USA and played 35 minutes...the most of any of the USA team members. She was 4-12 from the floor and 1-6 from three-point range. Moore went 2-2 from the free throw line
and grabbed eight rebounds. She also had five assists and three steals for USA.

Katie Lou Samuelson will not be joining the team in Spain. Dangerfield, a UConn commit, had 10 second half points as a part of her 12.

The Aussies got big efforts from Kristy Wallace (Baylor) with 23 points and Alicia Froling (SMU) who added 20.

USA will take on the Canadians today at noon.

ANGEL'S 32 LEAD DREAM OVER LIBERTY

Foul play at work yesterday in Atlanta...the Dream and Liberty shot 70 free throws in Atlanta's 84-76 win over New York. Tiffany Hayes was called for five 3rd. quarter fouls and fouled out early in the fourth in the whistle-happy contest.

Angel and her squad enjoyed a 19 point lead early in the third quarter but saw it evaporate due to the efforts of New York's Tina Charles, Epiphanny Prince and Brittany Boyd.

After trailing since early in the first quarter, the Liberty took a 69-67 lead with 5:47 to play. The Dream battled back, though, and came back from trailing 74-73 with three minutes to go with a 9-2 final run.

Shoni Schimmel saw seven minutes off the bench and contributed two points on 1-3 shooting. She had three assists, two rebounds and two turnovers.

The win was Atlanta's first over New York in three attempts this season. The Dream play six in a row on the road now...including a match up against Phoenix Tuesday night that will be televised on SportsSouth.

Miss USA Pageant tonight...Katie George representing Kentucky -- Sunday Cardinal Couple

GEORGE LOOKS TO BE MISS USA

Thanks to Donald Trump, finding this one on TV will be harder than keeping Katie George away from the net during a volleyball match. We've heard it is on the Reelz channel tonight. Still looking, still searching for Reelz.

We all hope Katie wins. At least here in Louisville. IF she doesn't win...I'd be OK with this girl winning:

One of the women in the spotlight will be Anea Garcia from Rhode Island.

Garcia was raised by her grandmother who emigrated to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic. When Garcia was 13, her grandmother lost her job. Over the next seven years, they were homeless off and on, often sleeping in their car in a Wal-Mart parking lot.

"There were times where I couldn't shower, or we'd wake up hungry and go to sleep really hungry, but I would go to school early to eat and pack some snacks in my backpack to bring for my grandmother and I," she said. "I definitely had to grow up faster."

She eventually earned a full scholarship to an all-girl Catholic school which also gave her a place to wash up and eat in addition to getting a good education. She said she and her grandmother still struggle to pay bills and rent, but the 20-year-old has a scholarship to Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I. where she's double-majoring in legal studies and philosophy.

Who we are and what we do

We are an independent website that covers the joy and excitement of UofL women's sports. We're not about birds here, or trysts with other like-minded couples or major league baseball. We write about women's sports at the University of Louisville. We are non-profit, we run no ads and don't ask you for fees and our writers volunteer their services. We have no premium boards or fee-based reads. We are "daily". The other co-owner and voice of reason....the lovely Sonja...who returns to us on a permanent basis after what can be called an "interesting" time at Rivals. In her words..."you work, slave, research and study for hours and build a site... a women's board. You spend hours on a three column article and several of the readers decide to take aim at you when all you're trying to do is enlighten. I've never seen so many mis-spellings of Louisville WBB players names anywhere...which made me think I was dealing with third graders over there... I have decided to stay off that street and source from here on out and I'm so glad to be back with those who love and appreciate me... not with haters and self-anointed experts " An avid fan of native gardening, hiking and the Smoky Mountains....she loves German potato pancakes and Led Zeppelin....and reminds you to plant native species. I've only seen her mad once (when she was ready to punch out another woman writer who was spreading lies about her) and I've got a feeling that might be a typhoon you want to steer clear of. One of the original writers on the site (with Paulie and David Watson), she has returned. Not as a columnist, but as a proof-reader, confidant and one to bounce thoughts and ideas off of. She's tired of guys with very limited women's basketball knowledge but huge egos calling her out when they are usually chauvinistic, and can be compared to the dog outside barking at something he can't see...We welcome her back and know she'll enjoy the calm waters here. You've got nothing you need to prove or defend with us....you are among those who love you.

About the photos...

CARDINAL COUPLE uses photos from all sources in the daily columns that we present to you. If we've used a photo you have taken and want published credit it for it...just contact us and we'll be glad to do so. Shoot, we might even write a feature article about you and call your Mom and tell her what a good son or daughter you are. WE avoid pictures that may be subject to copyright. Our legal advisors are busy enough chasing ambulances and wheelchairs when they're not trying to figure out trifecta plays at Churchill. Some of the photos are actually taken by the staff of CARDINAL COUPLE. (When we can get the camera away from the chimps). Paulie uses his cell phone to take pictures, too. You have been warned. Please realize that the captions that go with the photos are sometimes parodies. It's up to you to figure out which ones are and aren't. We can't spoon feed everything to you, you know... Jared Anderson is our main photographer and we have loved his work (even his selfies) for many years. Congratulations if you made it this far in your reading! We know...reading stuff like this can be pretty boring but WE have to put it on the site somewhere so that we can say..."hey, there is disclaimer on the site" in case some bozo decides that they want to sue us or something. Like we have any money. We're so poor we can't even pay attention. We even owe bums money.

I was walking down this road once years ago and I saw this guy chopping down a tree. It was hot, the guy was really sweating and I stopped to watch a while. He finally took a break, cracked a can of beer and then asked me if I had a gun. I hesitated before answering but finally told him that I didn't. He said: "That's a darn shame. I'm cutting down this tree because it's my neighbor's and I'm really pissed off at him right now. I was going to just shoot his sorry a$$...but I decided to do this instead. I'm having second thoughts...though." Sometimes, there just aren't enough trees... (I've never chose that particular walking route since..) .

If I'd taken a picture of that guy working on that tree, I'd been glad to share it with the entire world. That's the way WE see other photos out there. Share 'em and create through exposure and appreciation. We provide credit to the photographer when we feel it's needed. We also pay our taxes on time...
