Spring Volleyball? In Hawai'i !!! -- Thursday Cardinal Couple

 VOLLEYCARDS SWEEP HAWAI'I

Come to think of it...Hawai'i wouldn't be all that bad a place to spend a spring break.

In their second day of action against Hawai'i, Louisville volleyball took another match, shutting out the Rainbow Warrors (or Wahine, (if you prefer) 25-18, 25-17, 25-15. The Cards also won the first match the day before 3-1.

Blair Thiebaud

It was combination of returrning stars from last season and a new addition that stood out for Louisville in Honolulu. Payton Peterson had 11 kills and 10 digs for the Cards. Kalyssa Blackshear added eight kills and freshman Blair Thiebaud was essential on offense with 31 assists, two blocks and four kills. Thiebaud, a 6'0" setter out of college Station, Texas.
has a very impressive resume. She was the #1 setter in Texas in her senior season at Collge Station High School. She was on the USA Women's Under 21 team as a setter and played abroad in Indonesia.

She was one of five freshman Meske brought on board, his class was ranked fifth in the nation.

VB Sweeps Clemson 3-0 -- MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Good morning readers,

We are heading into the Thanksgiving holiday week so the 'Xmas tree doesnt go up till after Thanksgiving' crowd can give it a rest already.   We're going for another real tree this year and Lulu is looking forward to helping me do that this week  :D

As far as work goes, we're pretty much at that point where its gonna have to wait for the new year... ha ha.  If my boss is reading this, i'm just kidding.

Jared and I made it out to the Yum Center on Saturday for the unfortunate loss to that blue team we don't like.  It was a nice day to head downtown now that we are both feeling healthy again.   We left the arena feeling a little nauseated though...

It's a short work week so let's get to a short recap of the VolleyCARDS who secured another dub !!

Volleyball

Louisville managed to earn a 25-16, 25-12, 25-21 sweep at Clemson on Sunday afternoon.   They are on a 10 match winning streak and move to 22-4 on the season, 16-2 in the ACC.

Against the Tigers, Payton Petersen had 13 kills, hitting .393 with 13 digs and two blocks.   Cara Cresse added seven kills and a match-high nine blocks. Kalyssa Blackshear hit .400 with seven kills and three digs. Setter Nayelis Cabello had three kills, 35 assists and five blocks.  Clemson totaled 2 blocks in the match and committed 24 errors.

The Tigers were able to secure a single point lead on the Cardinals but it was very short lived as they gave it right back to UofL with 2 back to back errors committed early in the third set.   Louisville maintained the lead the remainder of the way.

Field Hockey vs #19 Cal -- Volleyball vs SMU -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

FRIDAYS WITH DARYL

Good morning readers,

One week ago, the University inaugurated its twentieth president and I had the opportunity to get out there for the ceremony and reception.  Gerry Bradley has been with the program for roughly 20 years and seems well poised for the responsibilities.

He also happened to visit my office earlier in the week and I had the chance to introduce myself and tell him how much of athletics impacts my life.  It's crazy to think how long this program has dictated alot of my life's decisions.... Anywho... I also recently learned I will get an opportunity to talk more about this on an Employee produced podcast.  More to come on that later.

Field Hockey

#19 California at Louisville

The Cardinals (6-7, 0-4) are looking to avoid their third loss in a row as the nationally ranked California Golden Bears visit town for an ACC showdown.

Cal is coming off a historical win for the program when it knocked off #5 Syracuse on Sunday. Liz Klompmaker's goal in the second period proved to be the difference. It was her 11th of the season, good for 5th in the ACC. The Bears' defense successfully defended 13 penalty corners in the match.

Klompmaker was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Currently ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Week Delphine Ayitey-Hammond carries a 2.03 goals against average with two shutouts and 35 saves on the season.

Around the ACC

  • #7 Wake Forest is the lone undefeated team in the ACC at 4-0  and 11-2 overall.
  • Six ACC teams are ranked in the Coaches’ Poll, five in the top 10.
  • The ACC’s six ranked teams are tied for the most of any conference.
  • As a league, the ACC boasts the top overall and non-conference RPI.

Big weekend for the VolleyCARDS with a couple ranked matches and the Mustangs up first for a Friday night bout.

Louisville is 3-0 vs SMU winning 3-1 in Dallas in the 2024 matchup. opposite hitter Malaya Jones, right side Jadyn Livings and middle blocker Favor Anyanwu are all on the AVCA Division I Player of the Year Watchlist.

Golf

The golf squad is set to close the fall season on the road heading to North Carolina to take part in the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational.

This is the third time in the last four seasons the Cardinals will take part in the event. Louisville is one of 15 teams competing in the event. The field includes six teams ranked in the Top 25 and 10 in the Top 60.

The Cardinals are coming off their best team finish of the fall season at the Pirate Collegiate Classic. Louisville finished third overall in a field of 15 teams at 6-over-par 870 for the tournament.

The Cardinals lineup for the Tar Heel Invitational will include Madison Moman, Veronika Exposito, Millie Cottrell, Bailey Burkett and Emree Cameron.

Softball

The Cardinals wrapped up its Fall scheduled with Ohio State on Thursday evening at Ulmer Stadium.  I saw the squad warming up for the game when I was leaving work... Jared was able to make it over there and will cover the results in this weekend's podcast I'm sure.   The program doesn't really report stats from any scrimmages.  I can report that the Cardinals got the win :D

Im looking forward to some Friday night football and time spent with family this weekend!! Make it a great one.

Field Hockey Wraps, Volleyball Continues

Field Hockey Wraps the Season

Hanging around in California generally sounds like a pretty good way to spend a weekend, though I'm sure the Field Hockey squad would've enjoyed the weekend a bit more if they had started it off with a win, but what's done is done, and the team has one more game to finish out their regular season play.

The flock will match up against UC Davis today at 2pm EST, 11am PST.  Live video appears to be available a site called America East TV.  The link provided: https://americaeast.com/watch/default.aspx?Live=16209&path=conf

This game will have no bearing on the conference tournament prospect for UofL, of course, so the Cards' prospects of even playing in the ACC tournament at all are in the hands of other teams.

NCAA tournament play for the Cards seems like it's out of reach this year.  The NCAA tournament is an 18 team tournament, and with an RPI of 26, the prospects are dim.

So today will be a game for pride, for development of players and experience, and looking ahead to next year.

Volleyball

After an epic (it was over three hours long) five set loss to rival Pitt on Friday, the VolleyCards are really looking for a win today against 12th ranked SMU at 1pm EST, 2pm CST.

DBK and the squad, while taking things one game at a time, are really looking to hang on to that four seed in the NCAA tournament in order to ensure a whole tournament run at the KFC Yum! Center.

SMU is a team that kinda came out of nowhere this year, but they are heavy-laden with graduate students and seniors that won't be returning next year, so this is sort of a "one shot" deal for them this season.

The Cards will likely not be heavily punished for the loss at Pitt on Friday.  The team played well, and the outcome was certainly competitive.  Given that the match was against the number one team in the country and the Cards were the first team to win even a single set against Pitt in Pittsburgh (Pitt's previous set losses were one to Boston College in Chestnut Hill, and two to SMU in Dallas), polling is not likely to drop the Cards much, if at all if they win today over SMU.

For tournament seeding purposes, generally the NCAA committee looks more closely at the RPI, where Louisville is officially still in 1st (the more real time figstats site shows Nebraska eeking out a tiny advantage for 1st place today).

This may be considered one of the toughest weekends of the season for teams in the ACC, to play against Pitt and SMU in one weekend thanks to the ACC travel partner system.  Louisville will have hopefully gotten some good rest last night and looking to come into today's game strong.  As always, blocking will be one of the keys for the Cards, it really does drive the whole complexion of the team, leading to more floor defense, in-system offense and spreading the offense.  Otherwise, they need to minimize the errors and they should be able to beat the Mustangs, though it won't be easy.

This match is getting highlighted treatment today as it was "flexed" up onto the main ESPN flagship channel for the 1pm EST slot.  So lots of eyes will be on the teams this afternoon.

As Case mentioned yesterday, the CCRHP crew was scattered to the four winds yesterday, so there was no opportunity to get together for the CCRHP recording.

VolleyCARDS WIN vs UK 3-1 --THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Good morning readers, welcome back to Cardinal Couple!

It's Daryl checking in a day early because of some scheduling conflicts.  Jared made it down I-64 to catch the Cardinals top the Cats in Lexington and got to bring home a W for the good guys!!!!

Photos: Jared Anderson

Final from Lexington, Cardinals 3 - Wildcats 1

Louisville secures its 4th consecutive win vs UK to move to 8-1 on the season with a Top 15 and rivalry win on the national stage.

Reese Robins hit .556 and had 11 kills while Anna Debeer led with 13 kills and hitting .300.  Defensively, Cara Cresse and Phekran Kong had 9 and 7 blocks respectively.

Set 1

Cards win 25-21

Cards went up 6-2 before Cats able to storm back and tie it up 6-6 and the two went back and forth.  Cara Cresse had two big jumps for the kill to put Cards ahead 13-12.

At the media timeout and the Cards with the 15-13 lead, the two squads tied it up 16 out of the timeout. Anna DeBeer with the kill not long before Kentucky called a timeout and a 23-20 Louisville lead.

Cardinals defense was able to provide the support from Cresse and Reese Robins block to score and UK was unable to get the ball over the net after a long volley, so the first set ended finally ended at 7:31 pm.

After starting .087 In the first set the Cards finished with  225 hitting  while holding the Cats to  .133.  5 team blocks for UofL while none for UK.

Set 2

Cards win 25-18

To start the second set a Cardinal net error put the Cats on the board first before the Cards were able to secure the block and a long attack put Cards up 4-1 before giving up a couple kills and aces allowed UK to tie it up 4 all.   The Cardinals then went on a 3-0 run.

DeBeer placed one right in the middle to make it 12-8 --  She had 5 kills at that point and was hitting .400 to help pace the squad in the match.

Louisville went 18-10 and was cruising in control when UK took a timeout.   The Cards were able to extend the lead 23-16 before putting another set away.

Set 3

UK wins   25-20

Charitie Luper fell when she twisted her ankle on the 15th point in the third set with UK up 14-12 lead, the refs call a redo of the point which was ultimately won by the Cats before the media timeout.   Luper breifly came out of match.

With UK up 17-12 and hitting .400 and 3 blocks, the Cards had 0 blocks and 6 errors in the set, DBK called another timeout to reel the team back in.

DeBeer sneaks in a kill in for her 9th on the evening leading the Cards and making it 17-14 with UK ahead.

3 consecutive miss serves from UK keeps the Cards in it 19-17.

After DBK calls a timeout Kentucky scores and ends the set with a couple more kills, aces and a ultimately set point and block.

Set 4

Cardinals win  25-16

All 3 points for UK are Louisville errors to start the set

As a team, 10 kills to put Cards up 5-4 before another service error by Cards ties it up again

Cresse and DeBeer step up on defense and DeBeer threads it in the back corner of the court in front of the UK bench to put Cards up 8-5.

Cards up 13-6 and on a 7-1 run. Reese Robins drops the 9th kill to make it 14-7.  Phekran Kong with the block... the teams 14th.

There were a lot of reviews in this match and challenges used.  Head coach Dani Busboom Kelly went 2-3 in challenges.

Red & Black Recap - Sunday Cardinal Couple

Red & Black Scrimmage

(Photos by Jared Anderson)

Back in LNFCU Arena again for the first time, for the fans anyway, the team has been practicing in there for a couple of weeks, now, we got the first real look at what this volleyball team could do, and some jaws hit the floor.

Sofia Maldonado Diaz is a welcome
addition to the Cards right side.

When the smaller than expected crowd entered, the first thing they noticed was a couple of facility improvements.  We posted pictures of the new Taraflex floor with the retro jumping Cardinal bird logo on it some weeks back, but what wasn't shared publicly was new padding along the railing at the end of play opposite the team benches, a safety improvement that was well received by everyone.

When game play started, however, was when the fans started noticing some of the more substantive improvements to the team.  The first things fans tend to look for in this scrimmage are the new faces, including Arizona transfer Sofia Maldonado Diaz, who showed that she will definitely have an impact hitting right side.  For the freshmen, Ava Utterback had some good left side swings and demonstrated her big topspin serve, Nayelis Cabello ran the offense at setter showing off her mobility and athleticism, though we had seen both of these play in the spring.  Sam Untiedt (un-TEED) was new to the crowd with some solid DS play, and Payton Peterson performed well in every rotation.

Cardinal Couple is contractually obligated (no, we're not) to include a picture of Anna DeBeer with an embarrassing facial expression in any match recap.

Watching more of the match, though, it started to become clear that a few players had really advanced their game in the off-season.  The first one that I noticed was Hannah Sherman, who was an absolute brick wall at the net blocking in the middle, she chalked up nine blocks in the four sets, along with seven kills.

Even Nayelis Cabello's pony tail
defies gravity.
The next big advancement I noticed was Kamden Schrand playing as libero.  Her defensive and digging were amazing, to the point that I started half-jokingly asking if we had the 2nd best libero in the country, with Elena Scott obviously being the 1st.  That may be a bit of an exaggeration, but not a great deal.  The team as a whole dug and scrambled unlike I've ever seen them do before, it was quite impressive.  Scott and Schrand both led the team with 17 digs, Anna DeBeer had 13, Cabello had 12, Charitie Luper picked up 10, and Elle Glock came away with seven.

The other returners performed as we know they can, DeBeer putting down 16 kills, Cara Cresse with 17, Luper with 10.

Hannah Sherman just blocked
someone: the new normal
All in all, there is an incredible amount of talent on this team, and most of this team could go to other D1 schools and immediately start.  This is challenge that I don't envy this coaching staff, trying to pick the best of the best to select a starting lineup in that first match against Wisconsin.

My guess is that we'll see DeBeer and Luper on the left side, Cresse and PK in the middle, Scott will be the libero.  As for setters and right sides, after seeing the 3rd set of the scrimmage where the players were divided in sets that mirrored this, like it was a starters vs reserves setup, but then as the rotations happened, they started swapping players across the net.  It took me a minute to recognize that they were effectively running what I think was starters vs reserves, but the starters were running a 6-2 offense.  So the big questions of who we will see starting at setter and right side between the two players in each role that are competing for the positions may be answered with, "Yes."  I think we're going to see both in each with the 6-2, at least to start the season.

Between Kamden Schrand (pictured
here), and Elena Scott, the Cards will
be really hard to score on.
The overall level of play on the floor was amazing, and if this team can maintain that throughout the season, I think they will definitely be in talks for one of the top four seeds in the NCAA tournament, if not a shoe-in, meaning the whole tournament run for us could be at the KFC Yum! Center.

A quick note on rule changes for this year.  There are three; first, there will be no double contacts called on sets...this is a divisive change as some love it and some hate it; second, you can dress two liberos instead of just one and switch them in and out as you please along with the pre-existing ability to switch for two other players without any of this counting against substitution totals; third, an additional call is available for challenge review...whether a player's hands crossed the plane of the net and interfered with the set.

Finals Week at UofL -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Good morning readers and happy hump day!!

It's Daryl checking in with you midweek as Paul and I traded places on our writing days to accommodate some of life’s happenings.

It’s that time of year that everything seems to speed up and slow down at the same time. Parents are shopping, students are wrapping up the semester and then there’s the rest of us just trying to maintain the requirements of adulting.

Finals are scheduled to take place in the coming week. Good luck to all the students and athletes!

There were no Cardinals games yesterday and none today so we are just taking the time to breathe and get ready for what’s next as a program.

Volleyball

Volleyball is getting ready to head to the Sweet 16 for the ninth time in program history.

The Cards are scheduled to face off with #3 Creighton at noon on Thursday at 12pm.

This one will be available to watch on ESPN2.

Outside hitter Anna DeBeer was voted East Region Player of the Year by the AVCA. The Cardinals placed six players on the First Team All-East Region: Cara Cresse, Anna DeBeer, Elle Glock, Aiko Jones, Charitie Luper and Elena Scott. Phekran Kong was named to the Honorable Mention All-East Region squad.

WBB

And then we have the WBB squad who is preparing for the Battle of the Bluegrass on Sunday afternoon. The Cats are not looking like the nationally ranked squad we’ve seen in recent years as they went on a 5 game losing streak to some questionable opponents. While its not nice to laugh at other’s misfortunes, this is one where we will make an exception. I wont tell Santa Claus if you wont… but I hope the Cards pour in on them and win by 40. No mercy!!

The Cats play Minnesota tonight, if you want to get a pre-game scout on them. The catch is...it's on SECN+, which islike our ACCN+, you goyya pay for the privledge..

Good luck again to the Cardinals this week, on the courts and in the classroom.

As Always

Go Cards!
