WOMEN'S COACHES COACHES RECEIVE CONTRACT EXTENSIONS -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

 TEETER, COPELAND GET CONTRACT EXTENSIONS

Two of the coaches in the University of Louisville women's programs recently received contract extensions.

Scott Teeter, head women's lacrosse coach, got contract enhancements and a three year extension, thru June 30, 2028. Teeter is in his eighth year at Louisville, and came in and basically rebuilt the program after the Kellie Young debacle. In 2024 Lacrosse reached the ACC Quarterfinals, and has also set a new record for goals and saves in a game by a player and the team.

All-American Nicole Perroni ended with a 55 game scoring streak and a 54 game goal scoring streak. Perroni was also naked as an assistant coach for Colgate University for the 2025 program and the program is 7-6 this season and is in fifth place in the Patriot  League, currently on a three game win streak.

Teeter's squads get it done in the classroom as well, achieving the IWLCA GPA Award in four of his years here.

Derek Copeland also received an extension on his contract...the Cards head women's rowing coach has rebuilt and revitalized the program, while competing in one of the toughest conferences in women's rowing. Copeland was named head coach in 2014 and was the guiding force behind the continued improvements of the multi-million dollar Louisville Rowing facility on River Road. the G. Garvin III Rowing Center. The facility has offices for Copeland, two assistant coaches, boathouse manager and a graduate assistant. It also has a student study area and lounge, showers and can accommodate 80 student athletes with an equipment room and weight training center.

Congratulations to both these hard working dedicated coaches, who may not always receive the notoriety and public recognition as some of the others in the women's programs but are important program builders and leaders in the UofL coaching community.

NIL Compensation -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

 Kentucky Approves NIL Compensation

Friday's With Daryl have been put on hold again as Daryl spent last evening commanding the video camera crew at Louisville Slugger Field. The Bats started their home series against Indianapolis, which, coincidentally, Louisville City FC hosts Indy 11 this weekend. I-65 is sure to be busy the next few days.

The Commonwealth of Kentucky created all kinds of commotion yesterday. What started off as a day to discuss the possible NIL bills floating around different states quickly turned into Governor Andy Beshear signing an executive order making Kentucky the first state to allow NIL compensation by an executive order decision. Six states have already approved NIL compensation through their respective legislation. This will take effect July 1.

Several University of Louisville coaches and notables in the Athletic Department took to social media to express their thoughts on the matter, all seeming to be in approval of the decision.

Vince Tyra: "On behalf of our student athletes at the University of Louisville and other Kentucky institutions, we are incredibly grateful for Governor Beshear's Executive Order allowing them to earn additional compensation on behalf of their Name, Image, and Likeliness. Bringing the state of Kentucky into competitive balance with other across the country, and more specifically, the Atlantic Coast Conference was critical. His leadership, in collaboration with our universities and legislators in Frankfort, was welcomed and needed in leveling the playing field for our institutions and, more important, for our student-athletes."

Jeff Walz: "We applaud Governor Beshear on this ground breaking decision. This is the right thing to do. This allows our student-athletes to enhance their profile in the profession of their choice. This is about opportunity, and we are all for it."

Scott Teeter: "We commend Governor Beshear and the state of Kentucky on this thoughtful decision regarding Name, Image, and Likeliness. The success of our student-athletes has always been our highest priority and this decision provides them with even more opportunities moving forward."

Karen Ferguson-Dayes: "I'm very happy to hear that Governor Beshear issued an executive order on Name, Image, and Likeliness for the state of Kentucky. I fully support our student-athletes having an opportunity to advance themselves forward and this is a very positive step."

Mark Beckham: "I'm happy  and excited for my athletes to have the opportunity. The things they can do are limitless, which is a good thing. This is a new day in college athletics though; they can legally make money. We will see how it works, hopefully it is for the best."

Derek Copeland: "It makes sense that people should benefit from their own Name, Image, and Likeliness. These student-athletes work very hard to build and maintain their personal brand and should be rewarded when they do it so well. I am glad that our governor has taken these steps to allow for this to happen."

Arthur Albiero: "Kudos to Governor Andy Beshear by recognizing the importance of NIL to all student-athletes in our state and for the urgency with which he is treating this matter. I support the changes related to NIL as a path for our student-athletes to maximize their opportunities. It also keeps our state on a level playing field with the rest of the country. I am grateful to Governor Beshear's leadership."

Many of the men's coaches, including Scott Satterfield and Chris Mack, provided statements on the matter, all in favor.

There are still plenty of questions to be asked in regards to the NIL approval as well as how much different student-athletes will make. On the women's side, we expect to see Hailey Van Lith to be one of the players being able to do well with NIL based on her following. Women's basketball in general gets a lot more exposure than many other women's sports so those players have a good chance at doing well. Someone like Anna DeBeer, who has had an excellent career so far, could also benefit well. Mercedes (Mechi) Pastor is one of the most well-known collegiate field hockey players and has an international presence and may do well too.

What does that mean for places that cover UofL athletics, or collegiate athletics in general?

Well, first, we are one of those. The answer is plain and simple: we don't know. Cardinal Couple does not generate profit and does not make money by using different players' NIL. We do report the joy and excitement of UofL women's athletics. Will this even affect our normal operations here? Paulie is looking into this more and working with the terrific SIDs so we know how this will directly affect us.

Our Cardinal Couple Hour is back again tomorrow. We never know for sure who is going to pop in on the broadcast, but we can pretty much ensure Paulie, Jeff and Jared will be there.  We will dig into the Name, Image, and Likeliness more, but we will not have an answer to the question in the previous paragraph yet. However, the world famous CC Quiz will happen tomorrow. We always welcome you to join at home. Hint: study up your mascots.

Happy Friday, have a good weekend, and Go Cards!

“Leave a Legacy” — SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Rowing Team to Honor Class of 2020

This spring season saw thousands of athletes across the country end their college careers. Despite the opportunity for another year of eligibility, many student-athletes elected to move on with their lives and careers.

At UofL, some of those student-athletes that saw their careers come to a close were a part of the Louisville Rowing team.

The rowing team is one of the favorites here at Cardinal Couple due to the live remote show Paulie and Jeff did at one of the regattas back in the day.

An announcement came down yesterday that the Louisville Rowing Alumni did their best to honor the Class of 2020 that missed their senior season due to the ongoing pandemic. The alumni and parents of current team members raised the amount necessary (more than $3,500) to name a current racing shell. The name they chose was Leave A Legacy to honor the legacy that the Class of 2020 leaves on the program. The name was assigned to the best rowing shell in the boathouse and the shell will also include a decal specifically calling out the Class of 2020.

According to Coach Derek Copeland, the team hopes to have a special naming ceremony, at the Red and Black Regatta in October if possible. The state of affairs with the pandemic will obviously come into play for both a ceremony and the regatta in general.

While things do admittedly look grim for fall sports, as the axe seems suspended over their collective
necks, it’s not over yet. While only racing leagues have been able to travel consistently and avoid outbreaks to this point in the US, other sports leagues have begun their bubble events and have been successful so far. Whether or not they will maintain that success is yet to be seen but it does provide some glimmer of hope. It’s not clear why colleges and universities have seemed to decide that conference games are more reliable than regional games in terms of football, but that does appear to be the first step. Other sports are likely to follow suit, considering they start at some point after September 1st.

My working hope is that fall sports seniors will be afforded the same opportunity that spring athletes were if their season is canceled. There will surely be players that would choose to move on with their lives or educations like some spring athletes did, but to be given the chance to continue playing is better than to not. Plus, I don’t want to give up on the chance that a few of our fall sports teams could be very good and the senior class will likely play a large part in the success of those teams.

A History of Louisville Women's Sports Chapter 12: Rowing -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

I traded places with Paulie as he has a special feature this Friday.  Tune in tomorrow to see what he might have in store for you! -- Jared

A History of Louisville Women's Sports Chapter 12: Rowing

Ah, we have reached the conclusion of our summertime history lessons. And just in time too, with volleyball and women's soccer each having an exhibition on Saturday.  To wrap things up we shall look into the history of our rowing team.

Derek Copeland is the head coach for the Cards, where he has held the position since the summer of 2012.  In preparation for the upcoming season, Copeland enters is eighth season and hopes to continue on the success he's had in this position.  Copeland guided the Cards to a conference championship back in 2014.  They also qualified for their first NCAA Championships berth that year.  Three Cardinals have earned All-American honors since Copeland took over.  He was an assistant for two years with Louisville before his promotion.

Laura Aubrey was the head coach prior to Copeland.  She held the position from 2007-2012, all spent in the Big East.  Aubrey has since become a real estate agent with Kentucky Select Properties.

Julio A Viyella founded the program and helped it quickly grow and had 30 student-athletes after just two seasons.  He is now working in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area as the Director of Sales for AGSE.

The G. Garvin Brown III Center is home to Louisville Rowing.  Often referred to as "The Boathouse", it is located along River Road, not even half a mile east of the Big Four Walking Bridge.  They share the dock with LMPD.  The two-story Boathouse opened in February 2011.  The indoor part of the building has a storage area for boats, indoor boats to continue training year round, and a workout facility.  Upstairs there is a lounge area as well as several rowing stations.

UofL isn't clear on when their rowing team started but an October 1999 article by a site called "The Christian Science Monitor" mentions that they had just completed their second season as of that time.

Louisville is one of two rowing teams in the state of Kentucky.  The other is Murray State.

The only regatta in town is the Red and Black Regatta (scrimmage) as the Ohio River is unfit for competition.  You can stay up-to-date with UofL Rowing here with us at Cardinal Couple.

ACCN and Charter/Spectrum reach a deal

If you are a subscriber to Spectrum here in the Louisville area (or elsewhere), take a deep breath and relax.

The two mega-corporations have come out of their negotiations and reached a deal. Spectrum WILL carry the ACCN. The ACCN, part of the Disney empire, was added to the Spectrum lineup -- along with the other Disney packages.

No word yet on two other large providers -- DISH and ATT-UVerse -- on whether they'll be a part of the August 22 premiere for the ACC kickoff.  Charter/Spectrum joins DIRECTV, YouTube TV, Hulu and PlayStation Vue as providers here in Louisville.

Cardinal Couple - Just Keep Swimming...Saturday Surprise...--FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Just Keep Swimming

Alright, you know the drill by now.  FINA World Championships, Budapest, Kelsi Worrell and Mallory Comerford of most note.

The latest event with results relevant to UofL is the 4x200 Freestyle Relay.  Mallory Comerford, with a 2nd leg split of 1:56.92, helped the team to another gold medal.  Joining Mallory on the podium for this event were Leah Smith, Melanie Margalis, and Katie Ledecky.

In other events, Kelsi Worrell will be headed to the semi-final of the 50 Fly, her specialty event, recording a personal best of 25.65 in the prelims.  That puts here only .15 off of the American Record held by Dana Vollmer.  Sarah Sjostrom posted a 25.25 in her heat to advance, and will be the odds-on favorite to win the event overall.

Just Keep Rowing

Paulie and I have both had the opportunity several times to speak with Rowing Head Coach Derek
Copeland, and have enjoyed every minute of those conversations.

One of the least visible programs at UofL, despite the huge number of athletes involved, the Rowing team has a new Associate Head Coach in Sheila Rinozzi.

Rinozzi has been an assistant coach with the program for 3 years and has been a part of the program's meteoric rise is prominence on the national scene.  While the change in title reflects the trust and respect for Rinozzi, and, we presume, a salary adjustment to boot, the role she will play with the program likely will not change drastically.  As Copeland put it, "Assigning Sheila the title of associate head coach was an easy decision as she has already been contributing to the program at this level since the day she arrived".

We look forward to the annual Red and Black Regatta for the Rowing program, usually held in the October timeframe, on the Louisville waterfront near the UofL boathouse.  This is always a fantastic event, and we would encourage all UofL sports fans to take the opportunity to head down and cheer on a program that just doesn't get as much visibility typically.  The boathouse is spectacular, a real sight to behold.

Oh yeah, and they also always have a nice spread of food for everyone to eat lunch.

SATURDAY SURPRISE

We have a surprise guest for you on the "Catching Up" with segment for THE CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO HOUR Saturday. Here's a few hints:

-- She had the WBB Cards highest three point shooting percentage her senior year.

-- She led the WBB Cards in steals her sophomore year.

Who could it be? Tune in Saturday @ 11 a.m. to find out!

Spring Sports Winding Down

Louisville Softball Left Out

Sixty-four teams heard their names called last night as the selection committee built the regional groupings for the 2017 NCAA Softball Championship. Louisville was not among them. As Jeff pointed out yesterday, the team boasted a 13 year streak of tourney bids, but that streak came to an end last night. Louisville's exclusion was curious, but maybe not as much as we'd like to think. The Cards had an RPI of 55 through May 7th, and only 3 ACC teams ranked ahead of them in the statistic. Florida State, the shining glory of ACC softball this season, only came in ranked 7th. A lack of RPI love for the league leads to a weaker showing in strength of schedule, which is, unfortunately, still taken into account by most selection committees. It is a disappointing end to an up and down season, to be sure, but there is nothing else the Cards can do to change it. Coach Pearsall will undoubtedly use this heartbreak as motivation for the returning players next year. The Cards will lose some fire power on both sides of the ball, but the team will still have plenty of pieces for a great year. There will be more throughout the summer on softball wrap-up, but for now, we're on the outside looking in.

Baseball Closer to Clinching

Though the Clemson Tigers have run into a rough patch of late, the Louisville sweep is not any less sweet because of Clemson's struggles. The Tigers haven't been swept at home since 2014 and Louisville continues its dominance in Game 3s. Louisville finished off the Tigers yesterday in another "come from behind" victory. Though not as large a comeback as the 4 run swing on Saturday, Louisville did trail 2-1 after the first inning. The Clemson lead was short lived, though as Louisville regained the lead in the top of the second inning and never trailed again. The win moved Louisville to 23-4 in conference and 46-6 overall.

After some faltering from North Carolina over the weekend, the Tar Heels trail Louisville by two games for the number one overall seed in the ACC. With three conference games to play, Louisville's magic number is 2. A "magic number" is a measure of a team being able to control their own destiny. It represents the number of games a team must win to clinch (division, playoffs, homefield, etc). This number can decrease based on losses by other teams, but it cannot increase. Louisville's magic number of 2 means that winning at least two games against Florida State this weekend ensures that North Carolina cannot tie Louisville atop the standings. Louisville's 46 regular season wins also ties the school record, and the Cards can reach the magical 50 win regular season if they can extend their winning streak to 19 games by next Sunday. As much as I want the Cards to win every game, I'd be on even more pins and needles if they were riding a 20+ win streak going into the NCAA tournament. That said, this team is really good, and if they wanna stay hot, I'm certainly not going to stop them. Louisville is back in action in Bloomington on Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6PM and the game will be available on 93.9 The Ville and the Big Ten Network.

Rowing Places 5th at ACCs

Louisville finished their day at the ACC tournament with a respectable 5th place finish. Though it was only out of 9 teams, Louisville was well clear of the 6th place Clemson squad and finished only three points behind 4th place Duke. Louisville put a boat in all 5 grand final events, with a best finish of second in those events. Virginia won the tournament after nearly sweeping the grand finals. The Cavaliers finished 2nd in only one race, and the loss was by less than a second to the Syracuse team that finished as the tournament runner-up. Louisville's Sarah Podwojski was named to the first team all ACC and Kirsti Harrison was named to the second team. The NCAA Selection show for Division I Rowing will take place tomorrow at 5PM. Here's hoping the Louisville rowers can continue the great season they've had!

Until next time, Go Cards!

Monday Cardinal Couple -- Cards finish 17th in NCAA Rowing Championships

MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

- Cards get a second and two fourth place finishes.

- Congrats to Baseball!

- WNBA recaps....Dream lose, Lynx win

- Radio Show up in archives

In their first ever NCAA Championships, the University of Louisville women's rowing team finished 17th overall in the three day event.

Second year head coach Derek Copeland speaks of the squad's effort in Indy:

"I'm proud of the effort and competitiveness our team showed this weekend and it's a great way to finish a special season for our program. It was a great experience for our team because the only way to know how to prepare for this championship is to go through it. We learned as we went and really adapted well to everything each day. It's been fun to see how the seniors on the team have improved since they arrived and the impact they've had on the success we've experienced this season. They should be very proud of what they have accomplished and what the did for the program."

The second varsity eight crew finished second in the C final to Indiana...just 1.5 second back. Both the varsity four and first varsity eight boats finished fourth on the final day of competition.

Ohio State won the championship for the second year in a row with 126 points. Once again, we're not exactly sure how the scoring is tallied for rowing. Louisville ended up with 44 points.

In comparison to the Cards future conference foes, the ACC had two teams competing. Virginia finished fifth (105 pts.) and Notre Dame ended up ninth ( 81 pts.) in the final standings.

Congratulations to Louisville baseball, headed for the Super Regionals in the NCAA Tournament! They defeated Kentucky 4-1 in a contest that was delayed for several hours by inclement weather.

The Cards got three runs in the seventh inning to build their lead to 4-0 and held off UK the rest of the way.

Louisville will host the Super Regional at Jim Patterson Stadium.

The Atlanta Dream took a loss Sunday at Connecticut 85-76

Tiffany Hayes led Atlanta (3-3) with 17 points, and Erika de Souza had 15 points and eight rebounds.

Angel McCoughtry, the Dream's leading scorer, was 2 of 14 from the field and had seven points.

McCoughtry missed the third game of the season with a rhomboid strain, and she's dealing with bumps and bruises.

Shoni Schimmel had 11 points in 17 minutes off the bench.

''I still think she's hurting a little bit,'' coach Michael Cooper said. ''She had something (bothering her) in her back. ... I think it's a little bit of a residual effect from playing overseas (in Turkey) all that time (during the offseason). That's probably catching up with her.''

Minnesota went to 7-0 with a 87-79 win at San Antonio.

Seimone Augustus had a season-high 25 points and Minnesota remained unbeaten, holding off the San Antonio Stars 87-79 on Sunday.

The Lynx (7-0) set a WNBA record by winning their first 10 games in 2012 and opened last season 9-2 on their way to a second league championship in three years.

Minnesota led by 13 points midway through the fourth Sunday but had to fend off a late defensive push by San Antonio to remain unbeaten. Asia Taylor saw limited action, playing three minutes and committing a foul.

Friday Cardinal Couple -- Field Hockey faces ODU...Rowing goes to IU

FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

- BIG EAST opener for Field Hockey at Trager

- Rowing with an exhibition scrimmage @ Bloomington

This should be a good one.

#19 Louisville Field Hockey hosts #20 Old Dominion Friday night in Trager Stadium @ 6:30 p.m. It's a "black out" event...so dress accordingly. Admission is free.

CAF members can present their CAF Card to the concession stands during the contest and get a free beer or soft drink. What other reason do you need to attend?

Don't let the 1-5 ODU record fool you. The five losses have come to #6 Penn State, #2 Maryland, #7 Virginia, #1 North Carolina and #9 Duke.

Talk about a brutal pre-conference schedule! They did beat American University.

ODU joins the BIG EAST in Field Hockey this season. The other members this year are Louisville, Providence, Villanova, Georgetown, Connecticut, Rutgers and Temple.

Louisville has outscored their opponents 19-8 in amassing a 4-2 record. Freshman Shannon Sloss and junior Alyssa Voelmle lead the Cards with four goals each.

Sophomore goalie Sydney King was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll in Field Hockey last week. She's allowing 0.5 goals against average.

Come out and support Justine Sowry's "flock". tonight. The Cards also play Sunday 1 p.m. in Trager against Northeastern.

************************************************************************

Louisville rowing opens the fall with a scrimmage against IU.

It'll take place Saturday in Bloomington. The teams will conduct a variety of eight-minute races in various boats.

New coach Derek Copeland weighs in:

" After using much of last season discovering who were were as a team and as individual rowers, I think the team is well prepared for the upcoming season...They learned that what we're doing works, so this season, they know they have speed and they have confidence in what they saw last year. We believe that will help us raise our performance to another level."

Start of a busy fall for Louisville rowing. After IU, the Cards host the Red and Black Scrimmage on the Ohio on Oct 5th. Then it is off to Indy for an event, and Charlottesville, Va. ,

***********************************************************************

WBB has a new clip out. Not sure if I get the meaning of it but I stopped trying to figure out Coach Walz years ago...

Just stand back and let the gentleman do his thing.
