Derek Cowherd to Serve Four-Year Term

Louisville Associate Athletic Director Derek Cowherd has been named to the NCAA Division I Lacrosse Committee. Cowherd's role will take effect August 31, 2024 and will run through August 31, 2028, a four-year term.
The NCAA Division I Lacrosse Committee is responsible for selecting the field and seeding the teams for the NCAA Division I Lacrosse Tournament. They are also responsible for addressing and reviewing issues and topics that may occur, including rules changes. A handful of rules changes were implemented this past season.
"We're excited to have Derek join the Division I Lacrosse Committee," said head coach Scott Teeter. "It is wonderful to have someone of Derek's experience join the women's lacrosse committee. He will bring a great perspective as an administrator of the sport. He's been extremely valuable to our program at Louisville, and I look forward to see how his knowledge and expertise can help us grow this great game."

Cowherd currently serves as an associate A.D. for lacrosse and rowing at Louisville, a position he has held for roughly three years. He has experience in similar positions at Ohio State, Ole Miss, and LSU, all highly ranked athletic programs in the country. Cowherd played football at Louisville as a linebacker from 1994-1996 while pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Pre-Med Biology. He remained at UofL to complete his Master of Business and Public Administration. He is a native of Greensburg, KY, where he graduated from Green County High School.
While Louisville has not made the NCAA Tournament in quite some time, Cowherd's presence on the committee could help make a push to get the Cards back... in in the event they become eligible for postseason play. From an Athletics standpoint, the only requirement to become eligible for the NCAA Tournament is being .500 or better on the season. Winners of conference tournament championships (regular season if no tournament is held) are the exception and become automatic qualifiers regardless of their overall record.
