Cards Come Back -- Weekend Schedule -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Cards Roar Back Against the Deacs

It took some time but Louisville women's soccer found an answer plus some to an early goal by Wake Forest to get the 2-1 win.  The win moves the #16 Cards to 10-1-0 on the year with a 3-1-0 conference mark.

Wake Forest was first on the board just under 10 minutes into the match on a shot that ricocheted off the far post.  UofL was in the process of a fast break across the pitch when the head official halted play to go to the replay.  After several minutes of video review and discussion the play was overturned and a goal was awarded to the visitors. The half ended with just the controversial goal being the only goal of the half

Fast forward to the second half... Louisville came out with vengeance.  Coach KFD made halftime adjustments for Wake Forest's overly physical style of play.  The Cards moved away from their over the top attack and started going down the sidelines.

The Cards' first goal was a result of a corner.  There was a scramble inside the box for the ball before it came into Ravin Alexander's possession in the corner.  Already falling inward toward the goal, Alexander knocked the ball into the net past an out-of-position keeper in the 53rd minute. It was the first career score for the talented Cincinnati freshman and suddenly it was a new match with the score tied at 1-1.

Quote the Ravin: "No more !" (in regards to the WFU lead). Sorry Edgar Allen Poe...

Louisville was awarded a free kick 15 minutes later.  Emina Ekic lined up for the kick with the formation set up similar to a corner kick.  Instead, the junior took matters into her own hands and pulled the ball into the upper left corner, out of reach of the Wake Forest goalkeeper. The Cards were now up 2-1.

Louisville was able to relax some with the final 22 minutes.  They held possession for most of the remainder of the match and cruised to their third straight win.

The Cards take a short break before hosting Clemson next Thursday.

Weekend Scheduling

Friday

Swimming and Diving hosts the first day of a two-day event against Xavier starting at 1:00.  The time has been pushed up from the previously scheduled 3:00.  Admission is free at the Ralph Wright Natatorium.

Field Hockey has a Top 20 showdown against #20 Wake Forest at 6:00.  The Cards return home from a lengthy road trip and will stay home for a while.  Admission is free at Trager Stadium. A revenge game, of sorts. It was Wake Forest's win over Louisville last year at the ACC Tournament that kept the Cards from participating in the NCAA tournament.

Volleyball hosts ACC foe Georgia Tech at 7:00.  The Cards have started conference play with a pair of wins and can jump ahead in the ACC with two more wins this weekend.

Men's Soccer travels to Charlottesville to face #1 Virginia at 7:00.

Saturday

Football is home for the first time since the second week of the season.  They'll face Boston College and kick off at 12:30.  Multiple Kentucky-based politicians have been confirmed to be at the game so expect heavier than normal security.

We wonder if "the helmet man" Jack Ryan will make the trip down again this year. He is a fascinating story. Paulie spent a good deal of time interviewing the last time B.C. came to town.

Cross Country will compete in the Greater Louisville Classic all day at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park.  This large event shuts down the entire park as hundreds of runners compete.

Sunday

Field Hockey stays home to play a struggling Penn State team at noon.  This is the first ever match-up between these two teams.

Volleyball continues their ACC schedule with a match against Clemson at 1:00.

Softball wraps up their fall schedule with a double header against Indiana starting at 1:00.

Lacrosse will play a pair of fall ball games.  They'll take on Indianapolis at 9:30 am and Butler at 1:00.

We hope to see you at some games this weekend!

CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO HOUR

With the early football start, Paulie and I will be out of the studio for the weekly broadcast Saturday. No need to worry, though. Worldwide Jeff, Case and Daryl Foust will be behind the microphones to bring you the best in our never-ending quest to enlighten you on the joy and excitement of Louisville women's sports. With Daryl "in house" you can expect a lot of women's basketball chatter. If she can interrupt Jeff chatter about Volleyball.

The Cardinal Couple Radio Hour comes to you at 11 a.m. Saturdays on WCHQ 100.9 FM, on Facebook Live, and is available for viewing/listening at the station's website www.wchqfm.com or by downloading the WCHQ app at the website.

Happy Friday and Go Cards!

  1. The next four are going to be crucial in terms of seeing just how legitimate a contender Louisville WSOC really is.

Beginning with #2 RPI and #8 ranked Clemson. Going to #23 RPI and unranked Notre Dame. Bringing in #16 RPI and #10 ranked Duke and going to #9 RPI and #1 in the poll Virginia.

The Cards are #18 in the RPI and #19th in the poll I looked at.

I'd accept two wins out of the four. Naturally, I'd love 4 wins in 4 games here.

Last night was a blast in Lynn. Even if I was late for work, I wasn't about to leave. Except for the P.A. guy. What happened to the regular announcer, Paulie?

  2. On Delbert Ault...normal P.A. announcer. Rumor is he thought the game was Friday. Always check your facts, Jack. Our site is a good source for that. So is Go Cards.

    On Jack Ryan:

So I’ve seen some crazy in my time. Jack Hall, father of former Boston College guard Ty Hall, might out-crazy them all. What the hell makes you (1) build that thing and (2) wear it in public? The mini-helmets, the whirligigs on each corner, the lights, the pennants … the crazy look in his eyes … yikes.

I met Jack in the House of Cards parking lot the last time BC was here. He got a special parking pass to put his equally crazy, decorated pick-up truck with tall topper there. A camper-deluxe, if you will.

He's a wild man. I brought him a beer and plate of food from inside the House of Cards. Both were gone in just a couple of minutes. He told me a story about having the helmet covered in poop by West Virginia fans back in the early nineties.

Says they broke into his camper after the game while he was "out having a beer" at a nearby tailgate and had left his helmet in the camper -- opting for a toboggan because of the chilly weather . Says it wasn't the only placed they "pooped" in his camper, either

I'm not sure if I believe the tale...but...I remember how crazy WVU were when we played them.

  3. OMG, Paulie !! Can't stop laughing. Oh, the sights and experiences you've had. I still remember the "getting thrown out of the Liberty Bowl" story. You'll have to share that one sometime with the reders.
