2018 PROSPECT CHOOSES LOUISVILLE OVER KENTUCKY
As a freshman.
She'll be a junior in the fall and Seygan Robins has revealed that she has verballed to the Louisville Cardinals women's basketball team.
Seygan plays her high school hoops for Mercer County and the Harrodsburg, KY native is also on the prestigious KENTUCKY PREMIER AAU basketball program. She averaged 16.2 ppg last year for Mercer County...with 4.3 assist and 3.7 steals.
Words such as 'bullet passes', 'the hardest working player I have ever seen', 'the best PG in Kentucky girls high school hoops' and 'destined to do big things at Louisville' surround the rising junior.
Six months ago, she was pretty much a non-story for us here at CARDINAL COUPLE. The word we were getting was that she was solidly aligned with Matthew Mitchell and the UK WBB program. A couple of weeks ago, I got a tip that she was one that UofL was going to keep a close eye on down in Nashville and she wasn't "in UK's camp" anymore. Jeff Walz made that trip.
Her high school coach, Chris Souder adds:
Seygan plays the game the way it was intended to be played. She has a motor that never stops! She wants to be the best she can be so she is very coach-able. Great shooter, great passer, incredible competitor! Best player i have coached and also maybe the most humble kid I have coached as well! We are so excited to become part of the Louisville womens basketball family!

Things do change occasionally. Recruits re-open recruitment and...who can accurately predict the thought-process of a sixteen-year-old in the first place? From what we've seen, though...Seygan should be getting a lot of national press and rankings her senior year, if not before. Visualizing her in a back-court with Grace Berger (2018 -- Louisville Sacred Heart) isn't that hard to see...at all. Seygan isn't top 60 in the ESPNW Class of 2018 rankings. Someone up there needs to get busy and evaluate her.
Larry Vaught knows a thing or two about high school basketball. His Vaught's View website is always a good read. He says:
The 5-8 guard had multiple scholarship offers but it came down to Louisville and UK. Kentucky coach Matthew Mitchell had been guest speaker twice at Mercer’s annual Christmas tournament and was one of the first to offer Robins a scholarship. However, she felt a closer bond with Louisville coach Jeff Walz.
“Coach Walz has been telling me some things I need to work on. I have a lot of work to do, but he says if I keep improving I can come in and see the floor (play),” Robins said.
Robins, regarded as a four-star prospect, led her team in scoring (16.2), field goal shooting (45 percent), 3-point shooting (37 percent), assists (4.7), steals (3.6) and deflections (3.1). She also shot 73 percent at the foul line.
Her team finished 31-6 and reached the state tournament semifinals. She has scored over 1,500 points and made over 150 3-pointers in her career already.
Mercer coach Chris Souder is her uncle and has known since she was little that she would be a special player. “She’s a terrific player with a great motor,” Souder said. “She never quits battling.”
This girl looks very special. In 2018-19...Arica Carter, Briahanna Jackson, Mariya Moore and Taylor Johnson will be graduated and gone. Asia Durr and Brianna Jones will be seniors. Yes, there are guards that will also be added to the 2017 and 2018 classes in all probability...but @Seygan_4 looks to be one that the Cardinal camp wanted to get lined up early.Give her a "L's up" on Twitter, if you use that social media outlet.
Early interest and commits like this are usually a very good indicator of a firm commitment. It is especially pleasing to see an in-state player with quality skills verbal early. Nita Slaughter. Sara Hammond. Two players who had very remarkable careers at the 'Ville. That's usually a very good thing, readers.

DeleteCortnee Walton should have a good year, scoring more points and she always did grab rebounds. So this is a big year for Cortnee the senior.
DeleteLouisville is sitting on a gold mine at guard and wing this year with Moore, Carter, BJ, TJ (Taylor Johnson) SydZam, Jazmine Jones and the word is Brianna Jones has really stepped her game up this summer. Laemmle has overlooked skills also and could be the Cards 2016-17 version of Dakota Weatherford. I was partial to her and wish that she would have come back to play. Is this the best roster in UofL WBB history? Time will tell but it looks awfully strong on paper. The Deb Factor.

ReplyDeleteShe lists Louisville along with several other schools...UK, Colorado, Mich. St., Ohio St., Ole Miss, Va. Tech and Dayton. She's certainly done some wonderful things at Ashland Blazer here in-state and has a very high upside.

DeleteThat was the real #1 2015 recruiting class - Baylors because of Brown and Mompremier. Will be seeing them steamroll in the tourney next 3 years. How did Baylor snag both of them? Plus, they have another giant that's as good without the notoriety.

ReplyDeleteJust a note, there is no "s" on the end of Sara's last name, just like there is no "h" on the end of her first name. Sara Hammond. I learned how to remember that by observing that Hammond took no "s" from anybody and she scared the "h" out of opposing teams.

Great way to remember the spelling of Sara's name Paulie! Being a former musician, I always remembered Hammond because it is the name of a very popular organ used by musical groups. Like the organ, Sara made some beautiful music at UofL.

DeleteSara's final four were UConn, WKU, Vandy and UofL. Sara has said UK was her original first choice but Waltz showed more interest. Guess Matt was more interested in Anna Cole, Samantha Drake, Brittany Henderson, Sarah Both Barrette and Asia Bishop. How'd that turn out for ya, MM?

Paulie, do you think Sara and Bria met expectations? I wasn't a fan until the tournament run of their sophomore year. Was their much hype them being #8 and #12 coming in? It's a lot of pressure when you are rated that high. Shoni definitely lived up to the hype don't you think?

DeleteOn Sara...she was the leading rebounder on the squad two of her four years and finished fifth in career rebounds. zshe also led the team in blocked shots three out of her four years. I'm satisfied that Sara measured up to the pre-UofL hype about her.
DeleteBria did lead the team in steals three out of her four years. She is 15th. on the all-time scoring totals for Louisville (Sara finished 13th.) She never did average double figures in a season scoring for the Cards (Sara did three times) and her scoring average actually dropped her final two years from the numbers she put up as a freshman and sophomore.
Looking at players that were there roughly around there time on campus...Shoni and Mo had better numbers in scoring for their careers...but I think the contributions Sara and Bria made pretty much lived up to what I expected out of them as Cards. Do they make the Top Ten women's team of all time at UofL? Probably not...but both were essential in Louisville's successes.

ReplyDeleteWow...Marvin...that is a tough one. I think Walz almost has to go back with last year's starters in Hines-Allen, Moore, Walton, BJ and Carter...but we'll see who he has out there on the court during crunch time at the end of the game in a close contest. That speaks more to me than who is getting introduced at the start of a contest. There is So, so much talent this year to choose from. I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see 12-13 players get 15 minutes per game early on as he and the staff evaluate them.
