CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO GETTING A BOOST

SATURDAYS ON THE INTERNET OR ON THE ARCHIVED BROADCASTS...SOME GREAT NEWS! THE STATION WE EMANATE FROM...CRESCENT HILL RADIO...IS GOING FM.  STATION OWNER KATHY WEISBACH OUTLINES THE DETAILS BELOW:

Now that CHR is finally in the FCC’s window to amend our application for a new Low Power FM (LPFM) channel, and the reality of an FM broadcast is finally within reach, as founder, I feel the need to reiterate my reasons for starting Crescent Hill Radio and where I hope to see it make a difference in our community

Primarily, I started CHR in March of 2010 to create a playlist of local music that could get some exposure where it previously had none.  As a musician myself, I was well aware of how hard it is to get your music any airplay, after you and fellow band mates had poured so much time, energy and money into creating a recording.  Once CHR got a little notice, the amount of local music that I received was overwhelming and confirmed my reason for starting the internet and Part 15 AM station.  As it grew local folk presented me with other ideas for shows that focused on not only music but other community concerns,  ideas and educational programs that I also felt CHR could help with.  I also started running community announcements for local organizations, which I continue to do.  I feel we have done a lot in the past 4 years to achieve many of these goals and I thank everyone involved who has helped, including show hosts, board members and technicians and other volunteers for their contributions.  I am very, very pleased with the present state of our little radio station. 

The Community Radio Act was created in the year 2000 and was strengthened in 2010 when President Obama signed an amendment to it, which opened up frequencies in urban areas.  This amendment made it possible for LPFM stations to exist inside cities, where before only rural areas could take advantage of it.  The Community Radio Act’s purpose is to strengthen communities and help build relationships among various organizations inside those communities and make citizens aware of events and programs in the arts and charitable organizations.  Only non-profit organizations can receive an LPFM frequency.

So far, even without that LPFM signal, I think CHR has been a perfect example of what the Community Radio Act was meant to do.  It has taken four years for the FCC to finally start giving out these LPFM licenses, and now I hope we will be a real force in the whole “local movement”.

My hope is that CHR continues to bring together community, not only in Crescent Hill, but Louisville and Kentucky and Southern Indiana.  Community that includes artists, musicians, organizations, businesses that help charitable organizations, and more.
