Louisville women's basketball -- Selection Monday -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

CARDS #1 SEED! WILL OPEN FRIDAY AGAINST BOISE ST.

The University of Louisville women's basketball team now knows the road ahead of them. And, it turned out just the way the Cards wanted...logistically. Louisville will open as a #1 seed in the Lexington Region and play their first two games in Louisville, opening Friday, March 18th at noon against  #16 seed Boise State.

Also in the Louisville first and second round site are #8 seed Marquette and #9 seed Dayton. The winner of that matchup advances to play the Cards on Sunday at the KFC YUM! Center. Going two for two would advance the Cards to Lexington for action starting March 23rd.

A crowd of over 500 packed the Thornton's Academic Learning Center's fourth floor to witness Selection Monday with the team. A nice change of venue, with all the trappings...a free food line, cheerleaders, pep band and autograph tables lined with players. More on that later. A nice 300 seat auditorium to view the broadcast, too.

I represented Cardinal Couple at the event and arrived a little after the doors opened. Once inside the fourth floor, I found a pretty huge crowed already at tables and in chairs awaiting the show. Right away, I saw familiar faces and spent a brief period strolling through the crowd, speaking with people and just taking it all in. I picked Sam Purcell as my first interview and you can hear that one at this link:

SAM PURCELL SELECTION MONDAY

After my enjoyable chat with "Sammy P" I sought out the other "Sam" on the UofL coaching staff and did find Samantha Williams. She was surrounded by well-wishers, but after they slacked off a bit, I chatted with Samantha. Neither of the "Sam's" claimed any knowledge of the Central Florida Chimps Aerospace University (CFCAU), who I think might make a strong run in the "dance" and an institution that has approached me about a position as Floor Warden for Freshmen Scholarship Chimps.  Here's Samantha (who was dressed stunningly) and the ol' Pauster. Here's that audio below:

SAMANTHA WILLIAMS SELECTION SUNDAY

I did consider another coaching interview, sisn't see any but saw my pal Lamont Russell hovering nearby and wanted to get a few words with the guy who "carries" the team. His graphic design and video coordinator work at Louisville is invaluable in helping the team prepare for opponents, and as a former DI basketball player, he also has a vast knowledge of hoops, the squad (his little sisters, per him) and can really "pick up" the players. (See photo).

Lamont and I had a great chat, I didn't probe too much into his occasional "picking up girls mid-game" and we talked about the event and team. Hear his words below:

LAMONT RUSSELL SELECTION MONDAY

Following Lamont Russell, I went to a fan who I know pretty well and I wanted to get a little fan perspective on the event. We decided to keep him "anonymous" and we chatted about the season, the Selection Show and a few other topics, as the players entered the big room and headed to a couple of long tables to sit and sign autographs. Here is anonymous fan:

ANONYMOUS FAN SELECTION MONDAY

I decided to get in line with those waiting for autographs after my talk with anonymous fan and while waiting to reach the tables, Jeff Walz grabbed the main microphone and talked a bit to the crowd.

Walz thanked the fans that were in attendance and went on to cover a lot more material with them...but the line was moving pretty quickly and I decided to cut these Walz remarks short, because I was getting closer to Dana Evans, first one seated at the table. Part of Jeff's opening remarks are below:

WALZ OPENING REMARKS

I decided to try something I thought might be fun, going through the autograph line and interviewing each player quickly as I progressed. It may be un-rivaled in interview history...it certainly was a madcap seven minutes... and I did have a 8x11 picture that was free and on the table of the team that each player signed as I strolled down the tables. You can hear my questions and the great responses here:

WALKING PLAYERS INTERVIEWS

After the dash through the players, I needed a moment to re-compose. After resting a bit and getting a quick beverage,  I saw Walz surrounded by people and decided to see if I could get a bit more from Coach. He was gracious and chatted with me while he signed shirts and stuff. I appreciate his time and "exclusive".

Hear Coach's comments below:

WALZ ON THE SELECTION SHOW AND ACC.

It was time to go into the auditorium and see the selections. The seats were filled and I spent a little time with the media group, stationed behind the cameras, chatting with a couple of our occasional CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO HOUR guests Mike Gilpatrick and Daryl Foust. I also chatted with Howie Lindsey and decided to follow him to the entrance to the auditorium's seats. We were able to see the big screen, see the fans and players and watched the drawing there and I took a few of the pictures you see here.

Louisville has an interesting road to Columbus. In the Lexington bracket are also Stanford, Tennessee and Baylor. Several people I spoke with after the show was completed expressed concern about Mulkey's Bears and Kalani Brown. At least her dad...ex NBA'er Dee Brown...has no eligibility.

It's all about survival and advancement now.

Just survive somehow.

As I prepared to leave the facility, Walz got hold of the microphone again and thanked everyone for attending. He also made a heartfelt plea to the fans in attendance to get their tickets and bring a couple of friends. Louisville was been allotted 3500 tickets for rounds 1 & 2 and he'd like to see all those gobbled up by start of NCAA action.

Leaving the Learning Center, I had a sense of pride about the huge turnout I had just been a part of. It was a fun-packed two hours and I hope the University definitely considers this venue again. A lot of familiar faces and great fans. This program has a lot of love for it out there in our community and beyond and if most of our "media" is too short-sighted to see that on a regular basis, shame on them! Their loss. There were the TV Stations there last night, a few other journalists and website folks there to cover. I hope they stay with this team during their run. I hope many more jump on the bandwagon. Forget about all this "f@#$%&!" men's BB drama and back WBB!!!

Three tournaments of two games each. A simple but revealing way to look at the Cards March march. It's showtime, ladies and gents. Let the games begin.

It has to be good fortune that ROBBIE BARTLETT has been chosen to sing the National Anthem on Friday....right?

Louisville women's basketball -- Cards seeded #4 in Oklahoma City Regional -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

CARDS START AGAINST CHATTANOOGA SATURDAY @ 1:30 p.m.

Selection Monday has come and gone and a nice crowd packed into the Sports and Social Club to watch the Bracket Selection show with the team Monday evening. Two regions came and went before Louisville was announced as the #4 seed and opening against the Mocs. One figured Louisville would be the #4 when it was announced that Tennessee was the #5 and would be facing Dayton in Louisville. The only question was who would Louisville face and when it showed the Cards playing Chattanooga...the place erupted in excitement.

The Cards faced Chattanooga earlier in the season...a 63-47 win in the seventh game of the season at the KFC YUM! Center during the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame Challenge. In that game, the Cards jumped out to a 25-14 first quarter lead and were never seriously challenged. Louisville had no double figure scorers in the contest...but Walz played the bench extensively and UofL had a 28-4 bench scoring edge.

Chattanooga (21-10) won the Southern Conference Tournament by defeating Mercer 61-59 to earn the automatic berth in the Women's NCAA Tournament. They rallied from a 13-point deficit to get the win.

The 1:30 Saturday game time is fortunate, since it doesn't conflict with men's basketball...but fans better hurry to get tickets...since Tennessee travels very well and both Dayton and Chattanooga are within easy traveling distance and will show up in big numbers.

The UofL WBB game Saturday will be followed by #5 seed Tennessee facing #12 Dayton around 4 p.m. Games are listed as being on ESPN2.

Tennessee (19-11), selected as an at-large, got the #5 seed in part by who they beat in the regular season (South Carolina, Kansas State, Notre Dame and Mississippi St.) They'll face a Flyer team (22-9) that won the automatic bid by defeating Duquesne in the finals of the Atlantic 10 conference tournament. Dayton has nine players 6'0"  or taller.

Speculation on how high the Cards would be seeded seemed to be centered around #4. Coach Walz confirmed that's what he was thinking earlier in the evening when I chatted with him. The talent that landed in The Oklahoma City region is impressive...Baylor the #1 seed, Mississippi State the #2 seed and Washington the #3 seed. #6 Oklahoma, #7 DePaul, #8 LSU and #9 California are all dangerous foes.

The crowd at the S&SC was an early arriving one and excitement buzzed through the room as the show drew closer and closer. Louie the Cardinal Bird made his way through the tables greeting fans and Coach Walz spent time going to tables to thank people for coming out. The players signed autographs and Cortnee, Myisha and Asia...along with Coach Walz took turns addressing the media after it was announced that the Cards were in.

Briahanna Jackson is doing fine, according to Coach Walz, and will be available for the NCAA Tournament.

Surprises? I wonder about Duke getting a #2 seed and Maryland as the #3 in the Bridgeport region. I though that might be reversed. Virginia did not get a bid and that is a big surprise. Marquette a #5 seed and DePaul a #7 seem a little high and low, respectively. Michigan not getting invited is inexcusable.

We got a few interviews while we were down there. The Walz interview and Durr interviews were just too noisy in the background and the camera guys got in front of me...but we still have sounds below. The final two listed below come from the Cardinal Authority site...they were closer and the audio quality is better. I was in the back. Avert your eyes and listen, if necessary...

Lax Wins, Selection Season -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Lacrosse Handles Duke in ACC Home Opener

After falling to Notre Dame in South Bend last Saturday in the conference opener, the Louisville lacrosse team evened their conference record with a win over Duke yesterday afternoon. It was considered an upset, with Duke being ranked 15/17 and Louisville falling into the "receiving votes" category. The 11-8 loss pushed Duke to 0-3 in conference, and they'll certainly be looking to right the ship.

The game opened with a flurry of goals, as the Cards and Blue Devils traded two goals apiece before Louisville picked up the fifth overall goal of the game in the first nine minutes. Action was a bit more stagnant for the next 15 minutes as Louisville clung onto a 3-2 lead. The Cards extended that lead to 4-2 but Duke was able to pull it back within one. Starting with a Meghan Siverson goal with 1:26 remaining in the first half, Louisville scored four straight spanning into the second half to go up 8-3 and effectively put the game out of reach. Duke scored three of the next four goals to bring the tally to 9-6, but Louisville went up 11-6 with four and a half minutes remaining. Duke could only score two more to set the final score.

It was an eventful second half when, after only one yellow card in the first, five yellow cards were awarded. Three went to Louisville and the other two to Duke. After a big scoring game, Hannah Koloski picked up her 33rd goal of the season to lead the team. Meghan Siverson is hot on her tail with 32. It was also a great game for Louisville goalkeeper, Brittany Read, who picked up ten saves in the win. Louisville is still struggling to replace the reliable draw control from years past. Duke handled Louisville in that category with a whopping 16-5 deficit. Like the rebounding battle in basketball, you can win the game without winning the draw control battle, but you make it a lot harder on yourself.

Louisville, who looks to climb back into the rankings in the next poll, travels to Coastal Carolina on Wednesday.

Softball Set to Brave "Inclement Weather"

After cancelling yesterday's games of the Louisville Softball Classic due to what was announced as "inclement weather," the tournament will conclude today on an even colder day. The Cards will play the middle game on this final day against Northern Iowa. The game is set to begin at 2, an hour and a half after the originally scheduled time.

March Madness is Officially Here

As Championship Week concludes today (which I still think is obnoxious), the Selection Committee will lock themselves away to determine the fate of the 68 teams who will vie for the title. The men's team looks well in line for a three seed, with talk of a potential two. However, we've seen crazier things happen in the past. Whatever happens, being in the tournament again will be step up from last year's heartbreak.

Similarly, a committee will convene tomorrow night to select the 64 women's teams that will battle it out. Louisville is hoping to grab a top four seed and play host at the Yum! Center. We've mentioned it before, but the selection show watch party will be tomorrow night at Sports & Social Club on 4th Street Live.

Cardinal Couple Radio Hour

Everyone's favorite hour (ish) of local radio aired yesterday and saw the triumphant return of its fearless leader, Paulie. We were also joined by Cards superfan, Julie "JC" Sullivan. The show centered mostly around basketball, which seems appropriate for this town around this time of year, but we also squeezed in a bit more as time allowed. Check out this link to hear yesterday's show and tune in to WCHQ next week for more wild antics.

Until next time, Go Cards.

Louiville women's basketball gets 3rd seed...will face Central Arkansas in Dallas Region at KFC YUM! Center -- Tuesday CARDINAL COUPLE

CARDS FACE 28-3 #14 SEED CENTRAL ARKANSAS FRIDAY 2:30 P.M. IN FIRST ROUND

An overflowing crowd, minus Jeff Walz...at home nursing a 101 temperature and flu...packed The Sports and Social Club at 4th Street Live Monday to watch the Selection Monday NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Special.

For Louisville, a bit of good and bad...getting a #3 seed and opening in the KFC YUM! Center Friday at 2:30 p.m. but drawing the red-hot Southland Conference regular and tournament champion Central Arkansas Sugar Bears...who went 28-3 on the season and are owners of a nine-game win streak.

Only Tennessee, Abilene Christian and Northwestern State hung losses on Sandra Rushing's squad...who were a preseason seventh place pick in the Southland but found a way to get it done all season long.

The Cards will not get the chance to play in Lexington if they can get past the Sugar Bears and either #6 DePaul or #11 James Madison...UofL was placed in the Dallas Region where Baylor got the #1 seed and #2 went to Oregon State.

Asia Durr was impressed with the evening and the activities:

"It's exciting and I'm hyped up already. I'm just ready for the game on Friday. I'm just taking it all in. It's my first time ever but I'm just ready to play...but we just have to take it one game at a time. Going to Lexington would have been great because we would have had a lot of our fans there but I'm just excited to be here."

The Cards did avoid a couple of arrows by landing in the Dallas Region...Notre Dame ended up as the #1 seed in Lexington and #2 Maryland got the #2 slot. Oregon State is the #2 seed in Dallas and could await the Cards if they can win the first and second round contests.

Kentucky got handed a gift when they were presented with the chance...as a #4 seed ...to play four games in a row in Lexington.

Surprisingly, only five ACC teams received bids...Notre Dame, Louisville, Florida State (#6), Miami (#5) and Syracuse (#4). Both NC State and Duke were not selected for the NCAA Tournament...meanwhile, the SEC got nine teams into the dance.

UConn was the overall #1 seed and will play in Bridgeport, CT. South Carolina got the #1 seed in the Sioux Falls Region.

We'll have more on the breakdown of Central Arkansas and some key match-ups as we get closer to Friday action. We have a download available for you on the women's bracket below:

Selection Monday --MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

WHERE WILL LOUISVILLE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL BE SEEDED?

After the gloom and disappointment of what is normally one of the most exciting days of the year for a Louisville men's college basketball fan...Selection Sunday...we move on to the joy and excitement of Selection Monday...where women's college basketball brackets are released.

Please, no Charles Barkley tonight. Please do not drag the selection process out for two hours. Get the darn bracket out there quick and then go into the discussions.

We are 99.99% sure Jeff Walz's Louisville Cardinals will end up in the KFC YUM! Center for the first and second rounds. If the YUM! Center slides into the Ohio River is about the only way Louisville won't open up there.

Where they will be seeded is the big question. Which region will the Cards fall into, Is there a chance they could go to Lexington for the regionals if they win their first two days? Are the Cards a #2 or #3 seed? How many ACC schools will get the invite?

The show begins at 7 p.m. this evening on ESPN. The official selection show viewing for the Cards will be at the Sports and Social Club at 4TH street live.

We'll go into detail Tuesday on the draw, the match-ups and the possibilities.

Remember we are having a women's bracket contest here at CARDINAL COUPLE with a $25 Panera or Cracker Barrel gift card on the line if you pick the most winners. First game is Friday at noon...you'll need you're entries in by then.

Happy picking!

Tuesday Cardinal Couple -- Selection Show Switchup...Cards #3 ranked in regional

TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

- NCAA Selection Committee places UofL WBB as a #3 seed

Cortnee and Sara are surprised at the #3 seed. Aren't we all...
A festive and excited crowd piled into the KFC YUM! Center Monday evening to watch the NCAA Selection Show. The players were signing autographs, a photo booth was on site and the concession stands were doing a brisk business.

When I arrived, I roamed the concourse level and got a chance to speak with Asia Taylor and Tia Gibbs before they went to court level to sit behind tables to sign fan items.

Both expressed an excitement about the event and the upcoming tournament. Both were looking forward to finding out where they would be travelling to in the first two rounds and were hoping Tennessee would be placed in the Louisville Regional...so they could play them.

I reminded Asia to smile (from Sonja). She really does have such a pretty smile, you know...

The girls got want they wanted..in terms of a potential, down the road
matchup. Tennessee is in the Louisville Regional. The kicker is that UT is the #1 seed, West Virginia the #2 seed and Louisville is the #3 seed. I couldn't see...but I'm pretty sure Asia wasn't smiling after the announcement.

Call the cops. The Cards got robbed.

The NCAA Selection Committee beatdown of Louisville basketball continues.

There are those that tell you that there really isn't much difference between a #2 and #3 seed. If you do your work in the first two games by beating the seeded teams beneath you...you get to the regional. Those seemed to be pretty hollow words last night, though...when the Louisville Regional information was revealed. First, seeing UT as the #1. There were some Cardinal fans holding out hope for a #1 seed. Then, when the bottom of the Louisville bracket was revealed and West Virginia was displayed next to the #2 slot.

People were already seated when I arrived shortly after 5:30
Mike Carey and his Mountaineers have a fine team this year. They are not better than the Cards.

And, WVU could have an arduous path as they try to reserve a date in Louisville on March 30th. and April 1st. They start in Baton Rouge against Albany...a squad that went 28-4. They'll most likely defeat "New Albany" (as one attendee joked at the show) and then have to face either a dangerous LSU squad on their home court or a Georgia Tech team that held its own in the rough and tumble future home of the Cards...the ACC.

Louisville, by comparison, doesn't have it quite as bad as they try to get back home. Idaho awaits the Cards in Iowa City on Sunday. Louisville will advance over them to take on either Iowa, a #6 seed that is on their home court or Marist...a squad that seems to get in every year and has a great coach in Brian Giorgist.

Be advised that Tennessee will have a couple of tests as well once they skate through their first game in Knoxville. Southern Cal could give them all they want. Maryland and Texas are also in the top part of that bracket.

You play the cards you are dealt. You win one hand at a time. Louisville got robbed and dealt a less than desirable hand by receiving a #3 seed.

Time to go out and show the NCAA Selection Committee just how wrong they were.

As you know, we don't cover men's sports here very often, but the Men's Selection Show for the NCAA Tournament was aired last night and dropped a bombshell on the viewing public. The University of Louisville men's team was seeded 4th. in their region and is headed to Orlando to play Manhattan on Thursday.

Fourth. Did the selection committee actually watch any basketball this season?

Did they miss the fact that the Cards won their regular season conference play and the post-season conference tournament in The American?

Virginia did both in the ACC. They got a #1 seed in their region.

It was all the talking heads on CBS and ESPN could talk about. And, the midwest bracket...where the Cards were placed...is no pushover...with Wichita State ranked #1 and UK and Duke placed in it.

The committee says they look at the overall picture, not just at the end of the season...where the Cards were arguably the hottest team in men's college basketball.

One would surmise whether the collection of imbeciles, feeble-minded and blind that made the choice saw anything at all.

Oh...add this. The head of the selection committee is the AD at Wake Forest. Maybe a pre-conference entry salvo being fired across the Cardinal bow? Yep...now we know how Virginia got that #1 seed. Those ACC boys look out for each other.
