Reliving Volleyball and Basketball this Weekend -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Reliving Volleyball and Basketball this Weekend

Louisville fans have been through quite a roller coaster  ride the last week or so. Volleyball continued to win, including a thriller against Oregon, to advance to the Final Four. Women's basketball announced that Payton Verhulst was transferring. After they fell to MTSU, they turned around to demolish SIUE and then hit the road to take down Kentucky. Men's basketball continued their horrific start to the season. Football saw a head coach bounce out of the city before the players knew and then turned around and saw the hire of another head coach a few days later. At least it seems to plenty of positives for Louisville women's athletics!

The success of Louisville volleyball is catching the attention of every Louisville fan around the world and all eyes look to them in hopes they'll be the first Louisville women's team to win a team NCAA Championship. Louisville women's basketball has been an established program for well over a decade now and has won the hearts of Louisville fans. Following a rivalry game win, the Cards have started working on a win streak.

I thought we could switch things up today and look at some of the highlights from the weekend through the lens of what I saw...

Louisville Volleyball vs Oregon

Louisville Women's Basketball vs Kentucky

Other News and Notes

-- We are moving up the Cardinal Couple Podcast to 10:00 a.m. this Saturday. Due to other conflicts, we decided that for just this week we would move it up by an hour. The following Saturday is Christmas Eve so the status of a podcast that day is uncertain.

-- Our columnist Jeff McAdams is hoping to travel to Omaha for the Volleyball Final Four. Nothing is finalized but we hope he is able to make the trip to cheer on the Cards.

-- Louisville WBB's Zyanna Walker is NOT taking a redshirt this season. Many of you had asked her status after she saw some action in a couple recent games. This will be her first year of eligibility.

(You knew Jared would have to get a "selfie" in somewhere in this article.)

-- Payton Verhulst announced yesterday she will be transferring to Oklahoma. She won't be able to play with the team this year but will have three years of eligibility remaining.

-- First year head coach Sam Purcell has led Mississippi State to an 8-2 record so far this season. They lost by one at South Dakota State and then fell to Nebraska by eight in Puerto Rico.

Happy Tuesday and Go Cards!

Softball Begins ACC Tournament today -- Ahlana Smith to Miss. State -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

SOFTBALL CARDS FACE SYRACUSE TO OPEN ACC TOURNAMENT

Louisville Softball opens ACC Tournament play today as the #8 seeded team and will face #9 Syracuse in Pittsburgh at 1 p.m. The contest will be shown on the ACC Network.

For the Cards, it comes down to three simple thinhs -- three of the major tenants in softball or baseball

1) Get runners on base  2) Get those runners across the plate to score runs 3) Do that more often than Syracuse does.

They weren't able to do much of those three in their season-ending series against Notre Dame, scoring just two runs in three days against the Irish, but, Louisville plated 15 runs against the Orange in a three-game sweep of them at Ulmer Stadium a few weeks ago-- 8-0, 4-1 and 3-2.

The Cards have the power and hitting ability to do it again. Carmyn Greenwood, Taylor Roby, Kendall Smith and Korbe Otis have led the offense most of the season and have accounted for 167 RBI's and 117 Runs scored for the Cards in 51 games and the Louisville squad outscored opponents 276-258 on the season

One of the keys, tomorrow is going to be limiting the number of runs the Orange are going to be able to push across the plate. And, obviously, good pitching and accurate fielding are the major factors involved in keeping foes from touching home plate. The "ace" of the staff -- Taylor Roby -- has shown in the past she can deliver the effective pitching to limit opponents from tallying up runs scored. Let's hope she's "on" again tomorrow.

An interesting philosophy was tossed my way earlier today, when someone expressed the hope that Roby WOULDN'T start today and Taja Felder would be given the assignment of containing Syracuse. that way, you could sane Roby for #1 seed Virginia Tech, who would be the Cards next opponent, if they get by Syracuse. An interesting thought, since Felder and Sam Booe split and shared strong performances in a win over Syracuse in the middle of April..

You must win today to play tomorrow, though, and Roby probably gives you the best chance of doing that, She had two wins over the Orange earlier in the season and I think you go with your strengths in "the second season".

Good luck to the Cards tomorrow ! Survive..and advance. .

(Thanks to Jared Anderson and Ryan Greenwood for the softball photos used in the article)

AHLANA SMITH TO MISSISSIPPI STATE

When Ahlana Smith entered the transfer portal, the gang at Cardinal Couple discussed the possibility of her joining up again with Sam Purcell -- at Mississippi State.

It has come to pass.

It'll be her fourth school in her time as a collegiate student athlete. Her journey began at aT UCLA,, then Gulf Coast, two years at Louisville and now at MSU.

Purcell gets a capable guard who scored 4.3 ppg at Louisville last season in 32 games, which was seventh-highest on the team. She was a reserve who usually entered if Kianna Smith, Chelsie Hall or Hailey Van Lith needed a rest or got into foul trouble.  A very capable ball-handler with much better than average speed and a decent three-point shot.

The thing is, with both Kianna Smith and Chelsie Hall graduating, you just couldn't see Ahlana as a starter. Too much incoming talent, the development of Payton Verhulst and Kasa Robinson returning seemed to indicate that Ahlana would keep the same role, only with a different cast of starters to spell.

So, she's off to a fresh start with a head coach who she's familiar with (and who recruited her out of Gulf Coast) -- in a situation where an experienced guard just might help Purcell fill one of the gaps in defining capable players for a Bulldogs team that went 15-14 overall, 6-10 in the SEC and lost their last six games.

She's the sixth guard listed on the latest 2022-23 MSU roster.

Wishing Ahlana a lot of luck under Sam with the Bulldogs. Beating UK twice would be a great start.

Have a wonderful Wednesday

Purcell Moves On and Up - Sunday Cardinal Couple

Sam Purcell Heads to Mississippi State

Sam Purcell has become almost an institution on the sidelines here at Louisville for the Women's Basketball team.  His infectious energy, going toe to toe even with Jazmine Jones, has endeared him to all who have had the opportunity to witness him in action.  That goes double for those of us who have had the opportunity to meet him in person and interact with him directly.

Purcell will now get to take the helm of a team, having been hired by Mississippi State to take the reins from Interim Head Coach Doug Novak.  Novak stepped into the temp position in October after Nikki McCray-Penson stepped down in October due to health concerns.

Purcell's hiring is an event that is at once both surprising and long expected.  There was basically no public chatter about Purcell being a candidate for the position, so when the announcement came, there was no preparation for it, it just appeared seemingly out of thin air.  At the same time, anyone who was aware of Purcell's role on Louisville's coaching staff knew, without a doubt, that this day was coming at some point.

Purcell has been with UofL since June of 2013, when he moved north from Atlanta and Georgia Tech.  Initially listed as Assistant Coach, Sam was promoted in 2017 to the title of Associate Coach.

Sam will still be on the sidelines with the Cards for their NCAA tournament run, though he and his family (wife Meghan, and daughters Reese, Rylee, and Reagan) did make a visit to Starkville to see the facilities and do some initial meet and greets.  He will be officially introduced to Mississippi State after UofL's season concludes.

It has been a joy to get to know Sam over his tenure at UofL, and we here at Cardinal Couple, and I'm sure all of CardNation, wish him the absolute best as he embarks on his Head Coaching career.

Selection Show

Speaking of NCAA tournament runs, the NCAA Women's Basketball Selection Show will be tonight at 8pm on ESPN.

We've been following, and discussing, the "bracketology" leading up to this, but the actual results will be revealed tonight, ending the debate and uncertainty.

UofL had been a fairly consistent "1 seed", but there had been some wavering recently with a relatively late season loss to UNC, and an early ACC tournament exit.  Charlie Creme had said that UofL would remain the fourth 1 seed as long as Baylor didn't waltz through the Big 12 tournament unchallenged.

Yesterday, however, Creme had seen enough of the Big 12 tournament that he moved Baylor up to the fourth 1 seed, and dropped UofL off the 1 seed to the top 2 seed.  It's a fair enough decision, the Bears knocked off Oregon State 76-36, and then Oklahoma 91-76.  They still play Texas today, and it's reasonable to question if Texas pulls off an upset against the Bears, if that decision gets reversed.

Ultimately, however the change doesn't mean much.  UofL is still bracketologied into the Wichita region with the expected 1 and 2 seed matchup being between Baylor and Louisville.  Louisville would, of course, still be hosting 1st and 2nd round games here at the KFC Yum! Center and would be expected to play Mercer in the first round game, with Princeton and Central Florida being the other half of the sub-regional bracket.

(NCAA WBB Bracket Selection Committee)

Of course, all of this is just informed speculation, and there are games left to be played.  All of the speculation and crystal ball gazing will be over this evening.  Then we can start the debate and, hopefully good natured, criticism of the Selection committee in earnest.

Today's Action

Lacrosse

After a quiet day without significant sporting events on the UofL calendar yesterday, things will hopefully get back in gear today.

Lacrosse is on the road in Chapel Hill in a big challenge against undefeated UNC.  It is getting to feel almost cliche' to talk about just how tough the competition is in ACC Lacrosse, but it's no less true than it has ever been, and North Carolina has always been one of the tougher competitors.

With wins over Furman, James Madison, and Northwestern, this year is no exception and UNC is expected to be stiff competition for the Cards.

Jamie Ortega is the goal leader for the Tarheels with 19 on the season so far, but only just barely ahead of Scottie Rose Growney with 18, and Andie Aldave with 17.

Taylor Moreno will almost certainly be between the pipes in goal, having started all seven of UNC's games thus far and played the bulk of the minutes.  There have been some appearances by Alecia Nicholas and Stella Harrison did play in one game.

A 1pm start time for the game, and like all ACC games, it will be on ACC Network Extra streaming.

Softball

Originally set to be played Friday, yesterday, and today, the Bluegrass Challenge has had is scheduled shuffled several times, and one game called off due to snow.  Such are the hazards of spring outdoor sports, of course.

Instead, the Challenge got off to an early start on Thursday, didn't quite get the last game in Friday as mentioned above as Louisville's game against Ohio got interrupted due to the arrival of snow.  Yesterday ended up being a day off for the event as the city dealt with a late winter/early spring accumulating snowfall.

The grounds crews have been hard at work, however, and with some warmup expected for today (a forecast high of 54 at Ulmer) helping, two games are scheduled for today.  These games have been shifted as late in the day as is practicable to give Mr. Sunshine as much time to work as possible.

Indiana will take the field against Eastern Kentucky at 1:30pm with the Cards taking on the Hoosiers in the second game, scheduled for 4pm.

The Cards and Hoosiers have already played once, opening weekend, in Boca Raton.  Louisville won that one 9-5 with Taylor Roby in the circle.  Home runs by Roby, including a grand slam by Hannah File, powered much of the offense.

It will be interesting to see how Indiana has developed in the intervening weeks.  They're 11-4 overall, but are currently on a seven game win streak.  Their last losses were against Florida State, a quality team that we know well, of course.

With two and a half hours between the start times, I would expect the Louisville game to go off on-time, and maybe even early, so keep your eyes peeled.  The Indiana-Louisville game will be on ACC Network Extra, so you can catch that if you can't make it out to Ulmer stadium.

Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast

All five channels were live yesterday as the full crew (Paulie, Jeff, Jared, Case and Daryl) made it for the CCRHP.  We talked a lot of basketball, because it's that time of year.  The show basically served as the NCAA tournament preview, and of course that meant we based a lot of the discussion about the bracketology and the bracketological principles.

Some quick mentions of other sports in actions, such as softball and lacrosse, but we stayed on basketball for most of the show.  Stay tuned until the end for a mini-rant about tumbleweeds.

You can catch the tweaked-for-better-audio version that Case puts up on the podcast directories at:

Volleyball Looks to Set a Record - Sunday Cardinal Couple

Volleyball at Duke to Set a Record

Good morning from Durham, NC.

As was talked about on the Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast yesterday, I hit the road after the show and drove to Durham and will be attending the UofL Volleyball match against Duke here this afternoon.

The Cardinals are 20-0 on the season so far with half of those being conference match-ups.  That ties the 2005 volleyball squad for the best "start" to a season for the UofL Volleyball program ever.  Does it make sense to still be calling it a "start" when it's three quarters of the way through the season?  Regardless, the 2021 Cards have the chance to take hold of that distinction alone today.

Duke is a low-to-mid tier team in the ACC this year.  13-9 overall, and 4-7 in ACC play has them tied with Syracuse for 9th place in the conference.

Notable non-conference match ups for the Blue Devils are a five set win over Iowa, a five set loss to Michigan, and being swept by UNC, and yes, that last one was non-conference.  Duke was scheduled to play Michigan State after Michigan, but the match was cancelled, perhaps for Covid reasons, so UNC and Duke decided to play a non-conference version of their rivalry match.

Duke has also played a conference version of the UNC match and were swept again.  They'll also play again as the season finale for the teams.  Otherwise, the conference results are about what you'd expect.  Getting swept by Syracuse is a bit interesting given how similar the team records are.

The other interesting data point was Notre Dame's match with them on Friday which went five with Duke coming out on the victorious side.  This one is mostly interesting because of the utter enigma that Notre Dame is this year.  The Irish are the "box of chocolates" team this year, you never know what you're gonna get.

Who are the threats on Duke's squad?  Ade Owokoniran (6'3") is the kill leader on the team, with just north of 3 kills per set, on par with Anna DeBeer.  Owokoniran is listed on the roster as both a middle and an outside.  I think they've been lining her up outside, but I'm not certain of that.  Otherwise, watch for Gracie Johnson (6'0") and Moorea Woods (6'2"), both outsides tallying just a little over two kills per set.

Feeding the hitters should be Alex Springate (5'9") controlling the offense from the setter position, although Camille Nazor (6'1") stepped into the role Friday evening against Notre Dame.  And the libero for the squad I expect to be Mackenzie Cole (5'10").  5'10" is fairly tall for a libero, though she does get over 4 digs per set, compared to just a little under 4 per set that 5'9" Elena Scott gets.  Scott's numbers may be slightly off because of the great Louisville block keeping fewer balls from getting to her to begin with.

The prognosis for Louisville is good here in Durham.  The Cards should be well rested with Friday off, and the Dukies are coming off of a five set marathon with Notre Dame.  Again, as has been common this season, the Cards are the more talented and more poised team with a squad that has not had radical changes in composition for nearly two years, now.  They were challenged last time out by a very good Pitt squad who were able to bring some minor flaws to the surface and have now had a week of practice to work on those improvements.

Check this live stream out on ACC Network Extra at 1pm.  Hopefully you'll get to hear some of the C-A-R-D-S cheer on the telecast.  We're expecting some area alumni to make an appearance as part of an Alumni Association event going on here this weekend, so hopefully the Cardinal crowd can spook the Blue Devils.

Tennis Hosts the Cardinal Classic

Tennis was the only women's event on the calendar yesterday, with the Cardinal Classic described as a "hidden-dual" format.  I'm no tennis expert, but my understanding is, unlike typical tennis squad matchups in Division 1 where the team will play doubles on three courts and then singles on six courts against the same team, in a hidden dual, the team will play the double courts against one team, and then switch to playing against a different team for the singles courts.

Four teams are playing in the Cardinal Classic, with DePaul, Ball State, and Middle Tennessee joining the Cards.

In action yesterday, the Cards picked up seven court wins (there's no overall match scoring due to the hidden-dual nature of the format).  They swept DePaul on the double courts, won two of the three in doubles against Ball State, and then picked up another two of the six in singles action against Ball State.

The schedule for the event only shows UofL playing against MTSU on singles courts today at noon, so you can head out to the Bass-Rudd if you'd like to check that out.

Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast

Everything was back to relative normalcy for the Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast, if anything with Paulie involved can ever be described as "normal".  Four of us on the call, with Case, Jared, Paulie, and myself.  We covered the big volleyball match vs Pitt on Sunday, the close of the Soccer season, more Field Hockey success in the form of a conference title, and the Women's Basketball Tip-off Luncheon.

We were also able to air Paulie's always-entertaining Tip-off Luncheon interview, which apparently  also doubled as an audition, with the unflappable Sam Purcell.

Sunday Cardinal Couple WBB News, Sam and Coaches, Podcasting

WBB News Keeps Rolling

Assistant Coach Sam Purcell was named one of the 50 most impactful assistant coaches in the league by Silver Wave Media.  I've never heard of the organization, but browsing through their list, I think they have compiled a good one, and their characterization of Purcell is spot on.
Purcell is a powerfully energetic, charismatic and a very spirited coach.  He is a go-getter, a producer, the ultimate brand ambassador. A highly decorated recruiter, Purcell’s accomplishments are numerous.  In seventeen years of coaching, the teams he has been a part of have combined for a 444-185 record, thirteen post season appearances, advanced to the NCAA tournament eleven times, a Final Four, two Elite Eights, four Sweet Sixteens and a WNIT Championship.
A selection of others on the list include Delisha Milton-Jones at Syracuse, Ariel Massengale at Lipscomb, Dean Lockwood at Michigan State, Kelly Finley at Florida, and twin sisters Jasmine and Cinnamon Lister at UConn and UC Irvine respectively.  These are all good company, indeed, for Purcell.

Assistant coaches often fly under the radar a bit, so it's good to get some recognition for some of the gems of the coaching world.  This would be a good list to read to through to be aware of some likely candidates for head coaching positions in the next few years.  The full list can be found at:

https://www.silverwavesmedia.com/news_article/show/1099958

We, here at Cardinal Couple, have watched a procession of assistant coaches through the UofL program go on to take head coaching positions.  Bethann Shapiro Ord went to Weber State and is now at Binghamton. Michelle Clark-Heard took the head spot role at WKU for six years before moving on to Cincinnati.  Cam Newbauer only spent a year on Jeff Walz's bench before getting a leading role of his own at Belmont for four years and now helms one of the flagship SEC squads at Florida.  And most recently Samantha Williams has taken the first chair at EKU.

Let's not forget "double B's" either. Becky Burke transitioned a Cardinal student-athlete role at UofL into becoming the head coach at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and now the head coach at the University of Charleston.

Walz is growing quite the coaching tree, and as much as I would love for Purcell to remain at Louisville, in no small part due to the absolutely delightful interviews we get from him, there is little doubt in my mind that a position will call him away at some point.  In the meantime, we'll continue to benefit from his presence and his infectious enthusiasm.

More Thank Yous

Two more message of thanks got posted this week by WBB seniors, and, like last week, I want to share them so more of Card Nation can see them.

First from Bionca Dunham:

Dear Card Nation,

First off, I would like to thank the best fans in the country for being a second family for me over the last four years.  The support you have shown me these last four years has been truly amazing!

To Coach Walz and the rest of the staff, thank you so much for believing in me and for your commitment and dedication in ensuring that I became the best basketball player and person I could possibly be while at Louisville.

To my teammates, together we have accomplished so much and I'm so proud of everyone of you.  For my teammates who are also leaving this year, I wish you all the best of luck.  I'm so excited for everyone to go out into the world and begin their exciting adventures.

Going to miss you all.  Thank you for the incredible journey.  Now on to the next chapter.  Card Nation thank you,

(signed) B Dunham

Also from Yacine Diop:

Dear Card Nation,

It broke my heart that the season had to end like this.  I have always dreamed about getting to the Final Four and having a chance to compete for a National Championship.  I truly believe that we had what it takes to accomplish that dream this year, but unfortunately we didn't get a chance to prove it.

But I just want to say thank you to Coach Walz and the Athletic Department for believing in me and helping me get to where I am today.

Thanks to my teammates for all the good times we shared that will forever be remembered.

Thank you to the medical staff and Kaiti for helping get me back on the court so that I can once again play the game I love.

Finally, I would like to say thank you to Card Nation for all of your support.

From the bottom of my heart,
(signed) Yacine D

Cardinal Couple Radio Hour

Paulie, Case, and I got together once again for an enjoyable hour of conversation, mostly around
Women's Basketball this time, for weekly edition of the Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast.

We had some fun with the scheduling segment of thinking about what might have been, but beyond that, we had some good discussions around coaching vacancies and the hype that can surround some of those.  We caught up with Field Hockey's Meche Pastor a little bit.  Check it out!

Interview with Sam Purcell -- A Cardinal Couple Quiz -- MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

SAM PURCELL INTERVIEW

I was able to catch up with Sam Purcell for today's interview. Admittedly, his energies and responsibilities have changed dramatically since the out-break of COVID-19 and cancellation of DI Sports. Instead of preparing for what most likely would have been the Cardinal WBB Sweet Sixteen opponent later this week or instructing players, he's busy helping to organizing birthday parties for his kids and adjusting to social distancing.

That doesn't mean we didn't talk hoops in our chat. We covered a lot of hoops. And, I think you'll enjoy the interview with "my man Sam" that we have linked up for you below.

CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO HOUR

If you didn't catch the Saturday podcast via Skype of The Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast with me, Jeff, Case and Jared..you can click the picture at the top of the page or go to this link. We hope you enjoy it, we talk a lot of basketball after getting caught up with each other.

The "A" team, or "the knuckleheads" were in rare form and on their "game" Saturday. We went a bit over the "Hour" in our title of the broadcast, but, what...you got a pressing appointment or something?

Enjoy
