Kiki Jefferson Joins UofL WBB -- Tennis Upsets Syracuse -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Kiki Jefferson Commits to Louisville

James Madison University transfer Kiki Jefferson announced her commitment to Louisville last night on Twitter. Jefferson joins the Cards for her final year of eligibility, thanks to the COVID-19 year, after four seasons with JMU.

While with the Dukes, Jefferson started nearly every game of her four year career and became highly decorated. She was named the 2023 Sun Belt Player of the Year and 2023 Sun Belt Tournament Most Outstanding Player. She ranks second in made career free throws (550), fifth in points per game (15.8), sixth in all-time points (1,838), and sixth in career free throw percentage (80.2). Jefferson is also a career .339 three-point shooter. She averaged 7.0 rebounds per game in her time at JMU.

Jefferson joins a somewhat slim Louisville roster. Returnees from last season include Olivia Cochran, Merissah Russell, Nyla Harris, and Alexia Mobley. Eylia Love transferred in midseason from Georgia Tech but was ineligible to play in the 2022-2023 season. Jayda Curry joined...she was previously at Cal. Hennie Van Schaik announced her transfer in from Cal State Bakersfield last week. Jefferson puts the roster at eight.

Ideally, we hope to see about three more players join the Cards before the start of the season to help fill out the roster...the chatter is that Walz wants 10-11 on the roster.

Women's Tennis Upsets Syracuse to Close Regular Season

Louisville women's tennis closed out the regular season by upsetting #36 Syracuse 4-3. The win is the lone win in ACC play for the Cards, who earned the 14-seed in the upcoming ACC Tournament.

The Cards claimed the doubles point to start the event. Rhea Verma and Andrea DiPalma took down the top Syracuse doubles squad 7-5. Cici Xin and Jamilah Snells fell in the second doubles group 7-5. Syracuse was not able to field a third doubles team, allowing the Cards to earn the point by default.

In singles play, Andrea DiPalma won her match-up 6-3, 6-4. Rhea Verma won 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. The Orange won the match-ups on courts three, four, and five. Syracuse was not able to field a player on the sixth court, forfeiting the point and giving Louisville the win.

The ACC Tournament begins Wednesday. Louisville will face Boston College at 12:30 p.m. at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.

Tennis Opens with Wins; Swimming in Kentucky -- SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Tennis Sweeps Double Header

Louisville women's tennis opened their season hot as they have over the past few years. The issue for the Cards has typically come in conference play, but each season brings renewed optimism that the team can finally break through the ceiling. The 2013-14 season was the last time that Louisville failed to win at least the first two matches of their season. In all but one of those years, Louisville won at least four matches to open the year. Ironically, 13-14 is also the last season Louisville finished with a winning record in a full season (the Cards were 8-6 when the remainder of the 2020 season was canceled due to Covid).

If that 2013-14 season stands out to you in time for any reason, it's because that was the last season before Louisville joined the ACC. The Cards, despite having some extremely talented players, have not been able to keep up with ACC competition across all of the available matches in a competition. Though the final scores don't stand out as world beating, Louisville continued their trend when they beat NIU and Bellarmine in their season-opening double header yesterday. Louisville took two of the three doubles matches against NIU to carry a 1-0 lead into singles play. After straight set victories for Andrea DiPalma and Jamilah Snells gave Louisville a 3-0 lead, NIU won a three-setter in the five slot. Transfer Maria Campos, who played with DiPalma to win the decisive third doubles match, won a comeback of her own to give Louisville the insurmountable 4-1 lead and the match victory. NIU won the other two singles positions to give the final 4-3 score.

The second match against Bellarmine saw Louisville's doubles pairings all reverse their fortunes, with Bellarmine taking the doubles point 2-1. The Cards were undeterred, though, as they promptly won four singles matches in straight sets to end the meet. After being the first two to finish against NIU, Andrea DiPalma and Jamilah Snells were the two Louisville players to not finish their matches against Bellarmine. Louisville won with a final score of 4-1, with DiPalma leading 1-0 (4-4 in the second) and Snells trailing 0-1 (5-5 in the second).

The Cards will have the week off before hosting another double header next Saturday. They'll bring perennial opponent Ball State and local foe EKU in at noon and 5PM respectively. The Cards have nine non-conference matches before they host Clemson on February 24th to open ACC play.

Louisville Swim and Dive at UK

The Cards and Cats are already underway in the Battle of the Bluegrass (Bluewater?). The platform diving portion of this weekend's meet took place yesterday at 4PM. As the split days are considered one big event, results for the day are not available, but the remainder of the meet is scheduled to begin at 1PM in Lexington. The Cards are ranked 7th and 17th in the country, the women's team being the higher of the two. Kentucky is ranked 20th and unranked, with the teams in the same order. Louisville has had particular success in the relays, with the Cards having four relay teams ranked in the top 7. Two are ranked 4th. Gabi Albiero (familiar name of course) is ranked in the top 13 in three events while Christina Regenauer holds two top-13 positions. Liberty Williams, Louisville's distance swimmer to look out for, is ranked in the top 25 in three events.

The Cats have not had a meet in a month, with their last event coming on December 19th. Back before Christmas, the Kentucky women's team defeated Georgia in a head-to-head for the first time in program history. If you're looking to watch some top talent hit the pool, head over to the Lancaster Aquatic Center when the doors open around 11:30.

He's also co-conspirator on the Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast with Jeff -- when he has an Internet connection. consider him our soccer expert here at CARDINAL COUPLE....we just have to keep him away from WSOC head coach KFD. During the day he helps blueprint and design better mouse-traps or fancy-schmancy buildings and stuff. Another one of them engineer types. Known for his love of the Seattle Seahawks and dislike of games that end in ties...he adds a voice of reason, intelligence and rationality to THE CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO HOUR PODCASTS. ( Or so he thinks...) Truth told, he's probably a candidate for smartest one of this bunch of hoodlums, outlaws and ne'er do wells...but don't tell him that. Often mistaken for NFL quarterback Andrew Luck...we're 99% sure that ISN'T Bobby Petrino sitting to his left. . Free to a good home that will give him a bath, something to argue about and some Rice-a-Roni.

Jared Anderson is one of our favorite writers and does podcasts with us as well. When he's not busy snapping photos of student-athletes he's taking selfies of himself somewhere. We look forward to his expertise on several sports on these pages and hope he accepts the challenge of taking on the Field Hockey water cannons. He also serves as CARDINAL COUPLE'S official photographer...an extension of his business JDA Photography. He also takes photos for other sites. He spends his working hours impersonating Freddy Farm Bureau around town and making sure folks are insured. Be careful, he might follow you home...but give him a hot meal, warm blanket, internet access, and a corner to sleep in if he does...and he'll be fine and unobtrusive, unless you give him picture-taking capabilities.. It's said that "you're no one unless Jared has taken your picture". He's owned by Katy- she's got the rock to prove it- and that's probably a good thing, because the lad needs a keeper.

Our newest writer, Daryl Foust, is all about Cardinals Athletics. A essential part of the old Cardinal Couple Radio Hour on the ill-fated WCHQ FM, she also had her own radio show (Kentucky Women Talk Sports) and has written for a couple of other Cardinal Sports sites. The standing joke is that she'll show up for the CCRH podcast again someday. A UofL employee, she' stays busy being Aunt Daryl and Lulu's owner. Her WBB and Softball knowledge is top notch . And, if there's a live music festival going on locally, you can expect to see her in attendance. We're honored to have her on board, we invite you to spend Fridays With Daryl at the website -- just don't ask her to predict scores, fill out brackets or be overjoyed at taking the Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast Worldwide Quiz during the summer months...she's rumored to be a golfer as well, so "fore" in advance if she's in your neck of the woods.

CO-FOUNDER AND CO-OWNER

The other co-owner and voice of reason....the lovely Sonja...who returns to us on a permanent basis after what can be called an "interesting" time at Rivals. In her words..."you work, slave, research and study for hours and build a site... a women's board. You spend hours on a three column article and several of the readers decide to take aim at you when all you're trying to do is enlighten. I've never seen so many mis-spellings of Louisville WBB players names anywhere...which made me think I was dealing with third graders over there... I have decided to stay off that street and source from here on out and I'm so glad to be back with those who love and appreciate me... not with haters and self-anointed experts " An avid fan of native gardening, hiking and the Smoky Mountains....she loves German potato pancakes and Led Zeppelin....and reminds you to plant native species. I've only seen her mad once (when she was ready to punch out another woman writer who was spreading lies about her) and I've got a feeling that might be a typhoon you want to steer clear of. One of the original writers on the site (with Paulie and David Watson), she has returned. Not as a columnist, but as a proof-reader, confidant and one to bounce thoughts and ideas off of. She's tired of guys with very limited women's basketball knowledge but huge egos calling her out when they are usually chauvinistic, and can be compared to the dog outside barking at something he can't see...We welcome her back and know she'll enjoy the calm waters here. You've got nothing you need to prove or defend with us....you are among those who love you.

If we've used a photo you have taken and want published credit it for it...just contact us and we'll be glad to do so. Shoot, we might even write a feature article about you and call your Mom and tell her what a good son or daughter you are. WE avoid pictures that may be subject to copyright. Our legal advisors are busy enough chasing ambulances and wheelchairs when they're not trying to figure out trifecta plays at Churchill. Some of the photos are actually taken by the staff of CARDINAL COUPLE. (When we can get the camera away from the chimps). Paulie uses his cell phone to take pictures, too. You have been warned. Please realize that the captions that go with the photos are sometimes parodies. It's up to you to figure out which ones are and aren't. We can't spoon feed everything to you, you know... I was walking down this road once years ago and I saw this guy chopping down a tree. It was hot, the guy was really sweating and I stopped to watch a while. He finally took a break, cracked a can of beer and then asked me if I had a gun. I hesitated before answering but finally told him that I didn't. He said: "That's a darn shame. I'm cutting down this tree because it's my neighbor's and I'm really pissed off at him right now. I was going to just shoot his sorry a$$...but I decided to do this instead. I'm having second thoughts...though." Sometimes, there just aren't enough trees... (I've never chose that particular walking route since..) .

If I'd taken a picture of that guy working on that tree, I'd been glad to share it with the entire world. That's the way WE see other photos out there. Share 'em and create through exposure and appreciation. We provide credit to the photographer when we feel it's needed. We also pay our taxes on time...
