Successful senior sendoff Sunday for Field Hockey...Volleyball sweeps Wolfpack -- MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

WOODS SCORE HOLDS AS FIELD HOCKEY DOWNS RUTGERS 1-0 ON SENIOR DAY

Louisville Field Hockey got their ninth shutout of the season and Nicole Woods got her ninth goal of the season in Louisville's 1-0 win over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights Sunday at Trager Stadium.

Hear our own Worldwide Jeff McAdams interview Coach Justine Sowry post-game at the link below:

JUSTINE SOWRY DISCUSSES WIN OVER RUTGERS

Woods score came with 15 minutes left in the first half on a feed from Chile Garcia...one of four seniors playing their final home game on the Trager turf. Victoria Stratton, Megan Anstotz and Katherine Gwynne-Wood were also honored in pre-game ceremonies.

Louisville got another outstanding defensive effort and Ayeshia McFerran recorded four saves while improving to 13-5 on the year. The Stick Cards head to Charlottesville, VA next to face North Carolina in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament on Thursday.

WIDE NET CARDS GET OUT THE BROOM IN RALEIGH

Louisville Volleyball bounced back from a Friday loss in Chapel Hill with a straight set 25-23, 25-18, 25-18 sweep of NC State. Janelle Jenkins continued the front line heroics with 14 kills.

A challenging first game...neither team gaining a clear advantage and Louisville actually trailing 23-22 before three straight Wolfpack errors provided UofL with the win.

Louisville would have none of that back and forth lead change scenario in the second game...roaring out to a 12-6 lead and pushing that to 20-10. Jenkins provided five kills for the Cards and she closed the door on Mr. and Mrs. Wuf with a kill for the seven-point win.

After the break, NC State made it a contest early...leading 10-9 before the Cards took control and chalked up 11 straight points to establish a 20-10 advantage. A Tess Clark
kill gave Louisville the final point for game and match.

The win keeps Louisville in a tie at the top of the ACC standings with Florida State at 11-1. Louisville is 17-5 overall.

The Cards return home for two in the KFC YUM! Center...dangerous Pitt comes in for a Friday night game and Virginia Tech challenges Louisville Sunday

Full Friday for UofL women's sports -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

FRIDAY FIELD HOCKEY AND VOLLEYBALL

It is another event day where the Louisville Volleyball and Field Hockey squads will be taking their respective fields of battle at the same time today. Field Hockey defends Trager against Spartie tonight at 6 p.m. while Volleyball has Carolina on their mind in Chapel Hill at the dinner hour.

Add in football at 7 p.m. in Winston-Salem and it adds up to a full Friday of UofL Athletics. Sprinkle in Breeders Cup and you have a fun festival of sporting events.

FIELD HOCKEY HOSTS MSU

The #9 Cards host a Michigan State team that has struggled this season (5-12) and recently got dusted by the Ann Arbor bunch 5-0 but Justine Sowry takes no opponent lightly.

The Cards (11-5) are led offensively with Nicole Woods and Stephanie Byrne with seven goals each...but it's been a community effort this year in getting the ball into the net with 10 players getting scores and eight of them with two or more. Back in the net, freshman Ayeisha McFerran has tended to eight shutouts in 16 games and has a 1.15 goals against average number.

Wins are important for the Stick Cards in the final two before ACC Tournament Play at Virginia. A high RPI will bode well in securing a 1st round home game in the NCAA Tournament. Louisville will face North Carolina in the ACC Tournament and a upset victory there as well would help Louisville stay in Trager to march towards a national championship.

Kudos also to Elisa "Chile" Garcia and Vic Stratton who have been selected to play in the NFHCA Senior Game November 21st. at the University of Michigan.

(Take sweatshirts and leggings...Ann Arbor gets a bit chilly in late November.)

VOLLEYBALL LOOKS TO STAY UNDEFEATED IN ACC

Our "missing the action" correspondent Jeff "Worldwide" McAdams wouldn't commit to how many more games in-a-row #23 Louisville Volleyball might run off (the win streak sits currently at 10) but UNC will be a challenging test for Anne Kordes' wide-net wallopers.

The Tar Heels are 11-8, 8-2 and boast a three-game win streak of their own...knocking off Miami, Ga. Tech and Clemson recently.

UNC also put the kabosh on Louisville last year in the KFC YUM! Center with a 3-1 match advantage...winning the final two games in nail-biting 27-25, 26-24 fashion.

You can witness this one on GoHeels TV at 6 p.m. The link below should get you there

Field Hockey ranked #12 in NFHCA Preseason Poll -- 6th in ACC

GARCIA, WOODS NAMED TO ALL-ACC PRESEASON TEAM.

We've said it before and we'll continue to say it.

ACC Field Hockey is one tough league.

The ACC and NFHCA polls (National Field Hockey Coaches Association to clarify) were released within hours of each other Tuesday and the Cards were #12 nationally and # 6 in the ACC.

Senior midfielder Elisa (Chile) Garcia and sophomore midfielder/forward Nicole Woods were selected to the Preseason All-ACC squad.

All seven ACC teams are in the top 13 nationally. UNC grabbed the #2 spot behind Connecticut and Duke is #4.

The Cards open their regular season Friday night with a 6:30 match against Appalachian State in The Trager.

The Cards have been impressive in the preseason, as my steamed colleague Worldwide pointed out in yesterday's article. Buoyed by his stellar PA duties on Sunday, the Stick Swinging Cards romped the alumnae 7-1. Equally impressive was the 4-0 win over #17 Iowa in the exhibition Saturday.

Admission is free for Louisville Field Hockey. In this...the 2015 Year Of The Fan as proclaimed by Tom Jurich and the athletic department...get yourself out to Trager and be one. It's about to get real on Warnock...

Louisville Field Hockey offers talent and youth for 2015 -- Tuesday Cardinal Couple

SEVEN FRESHMEN, FIVE SOPHOMORES ON 2015 FIELD HOCKEY ROSTER.

If UofL Field Hockey head coach Justine Sowry is observed walking around humming the late fifties hit Whatever Happened to That Old Gang Of Mine...one could hardly blame her.

Gone are six key players from the 2014 squad that defeated Duke and UNC and went to the NCAA Tournament. The efforts of Mallory Mason, Becca Maddock, Sydney King, Paige Monson, Rachel McCarthy and Hannah Boyle will not be soon forgotten in terms of their leadership and play for arguably Coach Sowry's best squad ever at UofL.

Jumping in to potentially fill those shoes are seven freshmen with a wealth of skills of their own. They'll mix with the 14 returnees on the 2015 team to take the Cards into action this Saturday against Iowa in an exhibition at Trager.

Protect Trager.

It could be tougher to do than last season. Scoring threats Elisa "Chile" Garcia, Shannon Sloss, Lotta Kahlert and Nicole Woods return for Louisville and they did account for 23 of Louisville's 58 goals last season. They're the probables to score points for the Cards this season and Sowry will look to returning forwards and midfielders Hailey Netherton and Katherine Gwynee-Wood and several freshmen to augment the balls-in-the-back-of-the net possibilities.

Defensively is where the Cards may struggle...breaking in a new goal keeper in either Elina Pereira or freshman Ayeisha McFerran from Northern Ireland. McFerran led Ireland to the gold in the World II championships this spring.

Senior Victoria Stratton will be essential in one of the defensive back slots and Sowry will look to returnees Erin McCrudden, Gianna Perrone, Abby Grimes and freshmen Maria Gomez and Taylor Stone to fill in the other spots.

It all gets underway this weekend with the opening exhibition against Iowa on Saturday and the Alumni game exhibition Sunday. Start time Saturday is 11:30...so the CARDINAL COUPLE crew will be rolling a bit late after our broadcast ends at noon.

Louisville Field Hockey --- IT'S AROUND THE CORNER ! Wednesday CARDINAL COUPLE

LOUISVILLE FIELD HOCKEY -- CAN THE UPSETS CONTINUE?

It was the intention to get down on campus this week and grab a Cardinal Couple preview of Louisville Field Hockey.

Coach Sowry is on vacation, though. Well deserved, no doubt. She's been busy with summer camps and preparing for the 2015 season. Still about a month before the season. We can wait. We're hearing rumors of a combined preview with FH and WSOC on the same day in mid-August.

So...where would one hold this and who gets to go first?

We'll offer today an unofficial prognostication on UofL Field Hockey. Subject to correction when I get in to talk to Coach....of course.

First off, the upsets over Duke and UNC happened here last year. Significantly tougher to do that on their turf in 2015.

The good news is that there will be 10 home games at Trager this year. Based on a preview of the schedule and Louisville's incredible win percentage at Trager over the last three years  (35 wins in 39 games for 90%)...these could end up 10-0 or 9-1....depending on how well they handle Virginia...who beat them in Charlottesville last year.

Add in a couple of road wins...maybe a sweep in California against
Cal and UC Davis (hint...West Coast Field Hockey hasn't caught up with East Coast yet)...and this could be a 13-14 win team entering the tough-as-nails ACC Tournament.

There are key scorers and defenders back from 2014...and a few names missing. A 2015 roster review shows the DuFour sisters missing.  We'll let Coach go into that when we catch up with her.

What is impressive is that Chili Garcia, Shannon Sloss, Lotta Kahlert, Nicole Woods and Stephanie Byrne all return to provide Louisville a potent scoring attack.

The defense returns starters Vic Stratton and Gianna Perrone but goalie Sydney King is graduated...leaving backup Elina Pereira as the only listed "keeper in the net." Only four defensive backs are listed and one is a freshman.

At first glance, a roster of 18...compared to 24 from last year.

Another NCAA run? We think so. Success on the road against UNC and Duke? Hopeful.

Rare photo of a blonde
Justine Sowry
Playing in the "best by far" conference for D1 field hockey and already with the reputation of being a giant-killer...Justine Sowry is in the enviable and potential "mad scientist" role Jeff Walz enjoyed a couple of years ago.

How well she mixes the test-tubes and applies the experiments remains to be seen...

I think she'll produce a monster...Tobacco Road should be scared.

Let's Not Go There For Women's Sports at UofL -- Adidas Design...Friday Cardinal Couple

DON'T MESS WITH LOUIE...

This is ridiculous
The University of Louisville has aligned their sportswear with Adidas...as most of us know. Nike...who is the most popular of the sportswear clothiers...would probably love to see the Cardinals fly over to their camp. It'll never happen as long as Rick Pitino patrols the Denny Crum Court sidelines and Tom Jurich has Athletic Director next to his name.

Adidas has designed new football uniforms for Bobby Petrino's football team. Of particular scrutiny is the stern looking bird in the helmet.

Dear sirs...what in the heck are you doing with Louie the Cardinal Bird?

I get that football is a mean, tough and tumble sport. You don't get points for niceness. This disturbed looking avian, though....that looks like he is getting ready to take a peck at this football players eye...is too over the top.

If I saw a bird like this in my backyard...I'd head back in the house and call Animal Control Services. Or Alfred Hitchcock.

This rendition of the Cardinal Bird has to go. Or, at the very least, have its progression stopped and limited just to football.

Louie the Barbarian.

Affixing Louie the Barbarian to this uniform would be
the only possible reason not to give Katie George a hug.
I don't want to interview Mariya Moore, Marissa Becker, Katie George or Chile Garcia after a game and have to stare at this obviously rabid and dangerous predator. I just might borrow my neighbor J.D.'s shotgun and keep the beast at a respectable distance. Or put it out of its misery and deranged state of existence.

And...if they decide to give Louie the Mascot an overhaul and include this hideous facial portrayal of our university symbol and state bird...kids will be running out of the KFC YUM! Center is fear and trepidation instead of running to Louie for hugs and high fives.

Adidas, you've crossed the line.

This is our bird. Don't mess with it
(Uhh...the one on the left...)
Dump this psychopathic-looking disaster and don't mess with our bird. Send this Louie the Barbarian to Ball State, Iowa State or any other college or university that has Cardinals after their name.

If Daryl from The Walking Dead saw this thing in the woods...there'd be no hesitation in arching a arrow right through the cranium.

Walker Texas Ranger would lock it up immediately. Arnold Schwarzenegger would terminate it. Ralphie from Christmas Story would refuse to wear it and Clark Griswold would give it to his Cousin Eddie. Donald Trump would fire it. If it ever appeared as a logo on the Papa John Stadium Football carper, I'd encourage and applaud the opposing team to stomp on it.

No bueno, Adidas. This does nothing to promote the joy and excitement of Cardinal Athletics.

If our football team walks out on the field wearing these asinine, preposterous helmets (and shoes) down in Atlanta against Auburn...I hope we lose by 40.

(OK, maybe that's a bit over the top...but...please, dear God...don't take this nightmare to Atlanta..)

This Ball State Cardinal is bad enough. The new
Louisville Adidas Bird makes the Ball State logo
look benign and wholesome.
Can you imagine Louie the Barbarian sitting in the Stanford Cardinal Tree?

Stephen King might nod approvingly...but that'd just be an abomination.

What's next...a change of the saying "Louisville First, Cards Forever" to "Total Degradation and Nightmares for my Five Year Old"?

Big Red, the lovable WKU mascot with an evil grimace and blood dripping from his rotund, red body? The Florida Gator with a disembodied senior citizen dangling from his jaws?

Somewhere Hunter Thompson is smiling. Fear and loathing has finally come to Louisville.

Leave our bird alone. And bury this mistake in the sandpit for the long jump over at Cardinal Park or underneath the Johnny Unitas statue in Papa John's.

Field Hockey Honors -- Tuesday Cardinal Couple

Field Hockey Honors

With Field Hockey's appearance in the NCAA tournament, we now have word of All-Region honors for Cardinal Field Hockey players.  Five Cards have received the honor.

Elisa "Chile" Garcia, Paige Monsen and Allysa Voelmle were tabbed for the first team, while Sydney King and Mallory Mason got nods for the second team All-Region.

None of the Cardinal All-Region team honorees are attackers, a testament to the Cardinal defending this season.  Garcia and Monsen are midfielders, while Voelmle and Mason are defenders.  Three of the five, Monsen, Voelmle and Mason, are seniors, while the Field Hockey team will still have the services of Garcia and King for another year.

Sydney King is the Cardinal GoalKeeper and also got a nod on my Cardinal Couple/Worldwide All-Syd team back in September.  King is somewhat unusual by being a west-coast Field Hockey player, hailing from Newport Beach, California.

Garcia was not nicknamed after this delicious
meat, beans and tomato dish
Garcia earned the nickname "Chile" due to Santiago, Chile being her hometown, part of a significant contingent of international players on the Cardinal squad.  I suspect there was also a desire to more easily distinguish between "Elisa" and "Alyssa" which sounds somewhat similar when spoken.

The other three honorees all came to Louisville from the New England area, with Monsen being from Marathon, NY; Voelmle having come from Hershey, PA; and Mason claims Simsbury, CT as her hometown.

Volleyball Time Correction Correction

Last week we brought news of a time change for the Volleyball match vs Duke this Friday the 21st.  There's now a correction to the correction.  The match is now set for a 6pm start at Cardinal Arena.

FIELD HOCKEY DOWNS MSU 2-1...WSOC FALLS TO VA TECH -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

GARCIA'S GOAL AND ASSIST LEAD CARDS TO WIN

Cardinal attacker Chile Garcia scored a goal and created an assist for the other UofL score in chilly East Lansing Saturday...leading the Cards to a 2-1 win over Michigan State University.

35 degrees greeted players and defense dominated the first half...both teams failing to score in the first 35 minutes. Louisville wasted no time getting the scoreboard operator working in the final half, though...the Cards getting a penalty corner just 1:43 into action. As they've done all season long...Paige Monson and Mallory Mason created the assists to give the sophomore Cardinal from Chile a shot attempt and she capitalized to put Louisville up 1-0.

MSU broke the Cards four game scoreless streak with a goal at the 52:50 mark to tie the match...but Louisville responded just 1:39 later when Garcia found Mason on a lead and the senior drove home the game winner for the Stick Cards.

#9 Louisville (15-4) now prepares for first round action in the ACC Tournament...where they'll face Wake Forest in a quarterfinal match on Thursday @ 1 p.m.

VIRGINIA TECH RUINS WOMEN'S SOCCER FINALE 3-0

#15 Virginia Tech faced off against Louisville in a cold Lynn Stadium Saturday night and put a 3-0 loss on Karen Ferguson Dayes' WSOC squad on Senior Night.

Louisville held a 12-7 shot advantage in the game but could not capitalize...losing the corner battle to the Hokies 5-0.

Louisville allowed two scores in the first half...one nine minutes in and the second 15 minutes in.

The Cards end their inaugural season of ACC play at 7-9-2 and 3-5-2 in conference.

A rebuilding season...for sure...with 12 freshmen on the roster....but promising times ahead with Shelby Cohen, Chatham DeProspo, Inger Katrine Bjerke, Alison Price and Isabella Habuda all with three years of playing time left and Paige Brown and Kari Weinland still here for two more years for the Kickin' Cards.

Giant Killers strike again -- Louisville Field Hockey downs #4 Duke 2-1 --- Saturday Cardinal Couple

FIRST HALF SCORES ENOUGH...CARDS NUKE DUKE 2-1

The Giant Killers strike again.

For the second time in two weeks, Louisville Field Hockey has defeated a top five program in NCAA Field Hockey...knocking off #4 Duke 2-1 in a rainy Trager Stadium Friday night. The Cards win streak on the home turf increases to 15 straight on an evening where ESPN3 was on hand to chronicle another upset dealt out by Justine Sowry's stick swingers.

Louisville started out in a defensive struggle with the Blue Demons for the first 12 minutes before Erin McCrudden returned a missed Alyssa Voelmle shot into the net on a penalty corner play. It was McCrudden's first score of the season.

Sowry and Bustin enjoy a pre game chat

Three minutes later, the Cards capitalized on another penalty corner attempt...Chile Garcia getting the feed from Paige Monson and Mallory Mason to put the Cards up 2-0 with 20 minutes left in the first half. Louisville's defense held strong to put the Cards in the locker room with the two goal advantage.

Duke came out strong in the final half...getting off two shots and a penalty corner attempt in the first 10 minutes. They cut the UofL lead to 2-1 when Martine Chichizola took one into the circle and fired one past goalie Sydney King.

Mallory Mason and Alyssa Voelmle celebrate the win
It would be the last the the Blue Devils were heard from, though...Louisville's defense holding strong and King closing the net with six saves for the game.

Things got a bit chippy near the end of the game...Alyssa Voelmle drawing a yellow card and sitting for five minutes. The Dookies could not capitalize on the player advantage, though...and Louisville goes to 9-2 and 3-1 in the ACC.

Justine Sowry recaps the win:
The coaches exchange post game handshakes

"We were nervous in the beginning. I think both teams were a little jittery. As we started to get in a rhythm, we starte to play to our strength and our identity. It was a very impressive first half. In the second half, Duke came out really strong. They're a very good team, so we knew they would come out strong. It was a gritty win. We has to be disciplined and we're happy with the win."

The Cards outshot Duke 11-10 but the visitors had a 8-6 edge in corners.

The game also marked the return of former UofL Field Hockey coach Pam Bustin to Louisville for the first time. Four years ago, she probably never dreamed she would be back here playing and losing in an ACC match against her former assistant.

The Cards return to the field Sunday for a 1 p.m. match against #15 Michigan.

Louisville Field Hockey upsets #1 North Carolina -- Sunday Cardinal Couple

SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

- #14 Cards pull off upset over #1 UNC in Field Hockey

"Why not?"

It's the final chant the Louisville Field Hockey team uses
when they break from a team huddle. When I predicted during a Wednesday interview with Coach Justine Sowry (available later today in the CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO archives) that the team would win 3-2 over UNC... it was her response.

Why not?

#14 Louisville downed #1 UNC 3-2 Saturday afternoon in front of over 600 screaming fans in Trager Stadium. Becca Maddock delivered the game-winning goal with five minutes left in the contest off a penalty corner assist from Alyssa Voelmle to break the tie.

It was helter-skelter from that point on...UNC pulling their goalie to increase their offensive capabilities and try to tie the contest...but the Louisville defense held firm to preserve the win.

The biggest win in UofL Field Hockey history and in Justine Sowry's coaching career. The most noteworthy moment in 2014 UofL Fall Sports.

Why not?

The teams engaged in a middle-of-the-field defensive struggle for the first half of the first half before the Cards drew a penalty corner and senior Mallory Mason...whose job it is to deliver the first inbounds shot on penalty corners...took a rebound off a missed Alyssa Voelmle shot and corralled the ball past UNC goalie Shannon Johnson for the first score of the game.

Louisville's 1-0 lead would hold until the final ticks of the first half...another penalty corner attempt for the Cards and almost the same results....Mason scoring near the net...this time on a feed from Chili Garcia.

2-0 Cards at the half. A huge upset in the making and a sense of guarded excitement from the UofL players and fans. UNC was simply too good to remain shut out and forward Charlotte Craddock scored two unassisted goals in the first two minutes of the final half to tie the game.

Nervous time? Yes, indeed...but the Cards regained their composure and tightened up on Craddock and the Tar Heels.

It looked like UNC had taken the lead with 17:35 remaining when Lauren Moyer slammed one home off a penalty corner attempt...but the goal was waved off since the ball has to leave the circle and come back in on a penalty corner. The ball never left the circle on this particular sequence so the score was disallowed and the Cards retained possession.

The defensive battle continued until Maddock's tie breaker...her fifth goal of the season.

Statistic to know. The Cards received 5 penalty corners and scored on three of them. UNC received 4 and could not convert on any of them.

Louisville (5-1) got a yeoman's effort from goalie Sydney King with two saves in the contest. The defense was spectacular in the fact that they allowed just four shots on goal by North Carolina...all in the final 35 minutes of play.

This is the first time that the Louisville Field Hockey program has defeated a #1 ranked opponent and the win also preserved the win streak at Trager...which is now 13 consecutive games.

The win also shows the rest of the ACC Field Hockey conference and the nation that the Cards are a bonafide contender. The close loss to Virginia last week showed Louisville could compete in the strongest field hockey conference in collegiate athletics. Yesterday's win indicates the Cards just might have a chance in winning the ACC Conference.

Why not?

Louisville Volleyball fell to Appalachian St. 3-1 yesterday in the Active Ankle Challenge at Cardinal Arena. The Cards were led by Maya McClendon (14 kills) and she was selected to the All-Tournament team along with Katie George.

Louisville dropped the first set 19-25 but rallied to take the second set 25-19. The magic stopped there, though...Appl. State taking the final two 21-25 and 21-25.

"Hats off to Appalachian State, they came in with a lot of energy and challenged us at every turn. At the end of the day, we played not to lose and they had nothing to lose," said UofL head coach Anne Kordes. "They had success at the serving line and we made it easy on them at times. We were coming off a successful week and I thought we played tight here at home all weekend. We need to learn to maintain our composure and take away a lesson from that situation. We have two ranked opponents this week coming up against Kentucky and Arizona State so that lesson came at a good time in our season."

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Field Hockey travelled to Evanston, Illinois

and defeated

Dartmouth 2-0 yesterday  afternoon. Elisa

Garcia scored

nine minutes into the contest on a penalty

corner...assisted

by Paige Monson and Katherine Gwynne-

Wood. That lead

for the first half and deep into the second half before

Shannon Sloss added an insurance goal unassisted with two

minutes left in the contest. Louisville (3-0) will play

Northwestern today.

"This was a great win for us against a difficult and

impressive opponent in Dartmouth," said UofL head coach

Justine Sowry. "We continue to learn lessons every day that

we perform. Dartmouth set the tone early that the one on

one battles were going to be important. We did a nice job

creating some space for each other and then were able to

combine with some nice patterns of play."
