A Mixed Bag - Sunday Cardinal Couple

Swim and Dive

Swim and Dive is kind of in post-season?  The ACC Championships finished up yesterday, but UofL will still host another "regular season" meet next week, the wonderfully named "Louisville Last Chance".

In any case, it was a pretty good showing for the Cards in Atlanta, the women's team finished the Championships in third place, and the men finished in second.

The best result on the day for the Louisville women was Liberty Williams' win in the oddly specific distance of 1650 yards.  Her finishing time was 15:43.21, an almost 20 second margin of victory.

As mentioned, the Louisville Last Chance meet will be next week, which is, as the name suggests, the last chance for swimmers to put up NCAA qualifying times for the NCAA championship.  The Diving Zones, essentially Diving's equivalent to a Regional section of a championship, starts March 7th.  Louisville will compete in the Zones in Ann Arbor, MI.  The NCAA Women's Championship will start March 16th, with the men kicking off on March 23rd.  The Championship events are also being hosted in Atlanta by Georgia Tech, so the recent experience in the pool for the ACC Championships will hopefully be an advantage for ACC teams.

Tennis

Women's Tennis finished up their non-conference slate...well, mostly...yesterday with two dominant wins over Austin Peay, and a cross-town matchup against Bellarmine.

The Governors were able to pick up a point against the Cards, but UofL cruised to an easy 6-1 win.

Bellarmine still had a slim opportunity to pick up a point on the last court in action, but even that was unlikely.  Rhea Verma had won the first set on the court 6-2 and was leading in the second 3-1 when they bagged it as the overall meet was already decided.  The Louisville win will go into the record books as a 6-0 win.

Tennis will start their conference schedule this coming Friday with 4pm match against Duke with UNC on Sunday at noon.  They do have one more non-conference match just randomly in the middle of the conference play when Xavier comes to visit March 18th.

Softball

And finally for the recaps.  Softball had a rough day against a couple of ranked teams in Gainesville in the T-Mobile Tournament.

After a good Friday knocking off Villanova and run ruling Florida A&M, the Cards took it on the chin in a 9-1 loss to 4th ranked Florida to start the day yesterday.  The Cards run was scored by Jenna Servi.  Servi singled out to center field, then after a fly out, Easton Lotus came to the plate and took advantage of a Florida fielding error to reach.  Carmyn Greenwood, definitely the big stick for the Cards this year, doubled out to left field to score Servi and get Lotus to third.  Alas that would be the only player to cross the plate for the Cards.

UofL would have a better showing, but still a loss, against 14th ranked Duke in the nightcap that started at 7pm.  The Blue Devils won this one 6-3.

Carmyn Greenwood gets the first run scored in the 4th inning after a throwing error by the Duke pitcher gets her on base, and advanced to 2nd.  Taylor Roby would get her home on a single to center field.

UofL would score their other two in the next inning.  Rebecca Chung pinch hit for Maddi Grant and doubled to left field.  The quicker Dylann Cravens came in to pinch run for Chung and then scored on Ally Alexander's double to left center.  Alexander saw a wild pitch and took third.  The catcher tried the throw to try to get her out at third, but that didn't work so well for them and Alexander was able to make it home on the throwing error.

That would be it for the Cards, and Duke would take the win 6-3.

UofL will wrap up their participation in the T-Mobile Tournament with an early game this morning.  A 9am start against Villanova again.  No video for any of the games that we've been able to find this weekend, but the live stats can be found at: http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=402512

Basketball Gameday

A bit of an overloaded day today with Senior Day celebrations, as well as the rescheduled "Pink Game" when Virginia Tech comes calling in the KFC Yum! Center at 2pm.

The Cardinals wore their pink uniforms in the last game in North Carolina on Thursday, which many of us didn't get to see live because: RSN.  But breast cancer survivors will be honored today instead of when the original plan, which would've been the Virginia game that got cancelled because UVA couldn't get a plane lined up to get here.

UofL will also be honoring three players for Senior Day pre-game.  This year was Chelsie Hall's extra Covid year of eligibility, while Emily Engstler and Kianna Smith have apparently chosen not to take advantage of their extra year of eligibility.  It's a reasonable choice for the two of them as they both have the potential to enter the WNBA and begin their pro careers.

The other three seniors on the squad, Mykasa Robinson, Ahlana Smith, and Liz Dixon all announced this week that they will be using their Covid year and returning to play another year next season.

Virginia Tech is the opponent.  8-3 for their non-conference matchups, 12-3 in conference, the Hokies are lingering in the bottom of the rankings at either 23 or 24, depending on which ranking you look at.

Non-conference losses were to Missouri State, Tennessee, and Liberty.  There's no shame in the loss to Tennessee, though they've dropped a few recently, the Volunteers are still a good squad and certainly were playing well in the early season when VT faced them.  I wouldn't rate any of their non-conference as being signature wins.

In conference losses were to the red-hot early Tarheels, a potential Final Four contender NC State, and a can-be-good-it-depends-on-the-day Notre Dame.  No need to hang their head over any of those.  VT has a number of good in-conference wins.  FSU could arguably be considered one, but a win over Georgia Tech is clearly a good win.  They won both against a decent but not spectacular Duke team, and they got revenge against UNC later in the conference slate which is also unquestionably a good win.

The big threat from VT is a name you're probably familiar with, Elizabeth Kitley.  She's no threat from distance, but she is a beast in the paint, probably not much of a surprise with her 6'6" frame.  Aisha Sheppard, Georgia Amoore, and Kayana Traylor, round out the double-digit scorers.  Sheppard and Amoore are distance threats, while Trayler has hit a few, but isn't a major threat from range.  Cayla King doesn't average double-digit scoring, but I will point her out as another 3-point threat.

Virginia Tech does have margins over their competitors on average in all of the "right side" stat columns, so no big weaknesses are exposed there.  It's really not surprising that the team sitting in 3rd in the current ACC standings is pretty well put together with no major weaknesses.

If the Cards can stop Kitley, that likely wins the game for them.  Alternatively, if Kitley gets her typical 17 pts/game, it will be critical for the Cards to shut down the rest of the team.  UofL usually tries to generate offense from defense in transition, but if it doesn't happen, VT's defense isn't particularly known for interrupting passing lanes, so the Cards should have the opportunity to set up offenses pretty well.

2pm is the tip for this one.  It's available on The ACC Network, and of course is also available through ACC Network Extra streaming setup.  Pam Ward and Dan Hughes will be on the call with The ACC Network, and of course, you can always pick up the ever-excellent radio call with Nick Curran and AJ.

Lacrosse

Finally, on the schedule today, Lacrosse hopes to continue their winning ways at home in the Louisville Lacrosse Stadium.  Central Michigan will be the opponent today.

Louisville has the win over Central Michigan the only time they played previously, in Mount Pleasant, Michigan.

This will only be the 2nd game of the season for CMU, the previous being against fellow ACC squad Notre Dame, who beat CMU 24-5.

CMU is a relatively young program, having played their first games in 2016.  They now play conference play in the MAC which is only in it's second year of Lacrosse play.  Central Michigan went 7-2 in conference last year, finishing second in the standings, but finishing a less shiny 9-6 overall.

Hopefully this will be another good win for the Cards, as they continue to refine their play and get a feel for success on the field.

11am is the start for this one and it is available on The ACC Network Extra streaming as we expect all home Lacrosse games will be for the Cards this year.  Two of those games will be available on the linear ACC Network, but of course all ACC Network linear content is available via streaming as well.

Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast

Four were in attendance for the Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast yesterday.  Daryl was off being "the cool aunt" again...hey, I can't blame her...while Case, Jared, Paulie, and myself held down the fort.

The show reflected the busy sports schedule of this time of year with discussions about basketball, lacrosse, and softball, among others.

There were a few minor hiccups with the streaming, so I'll point you at the anchor.fm home for the podcast postings to catch this one in replay.

Learfield IMG Director's Cup -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Louisville Breaks Top 25 in Learfield IMG Director's Cup

Louisville came in sitting at #23 in the latest release of the Learfield IMG Director's Cup. The Cardinals have accumulated 429 points from the fall and winter seasons. A total of 250 colleges and universities are listed and receive ratings based on performances from their different sports.

The Cards earned 73 points from women's basketball, fifth best. The Cards advanced to the Elite Eight and had the ACC Player of the Year in Dana Evans, who was then drafted 13th overall in the WNBA Draft.

Men's swimming and diving received 75 points, fifth best. Nick Albiero was named the ACC Men's Swimmer of the Year and won the National Championship in the 200 butterfly. The team of Mitchell Whyte, Evgenii Somov, Nick Albiero, and Haridi Sameh Kamel won the National Championship in the 200 medley relay.

Women's swimming and diving received 63 points, 13th best. Although the Cards did not win any national championships on the women's side, the Cards performed well in the ACC Championships and NCAA Championships.

Women's indoor track and field earned 52.5 points, ranked 20th. Makenli Forrest won the NCAA Championship for the indoor weight throw.

Men's indoor track and field received 18.5 points for 53rd best.

In the fall sports, field hockey received 83 points. The Cards advanced to their first ever Final Four. Three Cards were named to the All-ACC team in Alli Bitting, Charlie van Oirschot and Pastor is a candidate for the NFHCA National Player of the Year.

Volleyball received 64 points. The Cards advanced to the Sweet Sixteen and had three All-Americans in Tori Dilfer, Anna Stevenson, and Anna DeBeer. Dani Busboom Kelly was named ACC Coach of the Year.

Women's soccer, men's soccer, men's basketball, men's cross country, women's cross country, and football did not earn points.

Louisville does not carry bowling, fencing, gymnastics, ice hockey, rifle, skiing, wrestling, or water polo so they did not receive any points for those sports.

The spring sports have not been added, but Louisville is not expected to earn points in softball, lacrosse, rowing, or baseball. Both women's tennis and men's tennis should earn some type of points for appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Women's golf and men's golf both qualified for NCAA Regionals and Lauren Hartladge competed in the NCAA Championships so both teams should earn points. It is uncertain if Louisville will receive points for the outdoor portions of women's and men's track and field.

Louisville does not carry water polo, beach volleyball, or men's volleyball so they will not receive points for those.

I would not be surprised to see the Cards drop from where they currently sit once spring sports are added due to the absence of many teams from the postseason. Having other teams such as men's basketball and football, who normally score for the Cards in the fall and winter, not score anything also hurt.

The top 25 teams are listed as follows:

1- Stanford

2- Michigan

3- North Carolina

4- Ohio State

5- Kentucky (national championships in volleyball and rifle contributed to 1/3 of their score)

6- BYU

7- Alabama

8- Minnesota

9- Arkansas

10- Florida

11- Texas

12- NC State

13- Iowa

14- Indiana

15- Notre Dame

16- Georgia

17- USC

18- Texas A&M

19- Wisconsin

20- Oklahoma State

21- Nebraska

22- Penn State

23- Louisville

24- Virginia Tech

25- Ole Miss

Happy Thursday and Go Cards!

Sunday Cardinal Couple - A Day of Rest...Or Not

Basketball Breather

Coach Walz's basketball squad has actually had a chance to catch their breath, and even have a day completely off before getting ready for current number two team in the nation NC State.

The Wolfpack did drop a game over the weekend, so they probably won't be in that second place position come game time, but make no mistake, this is a very good team.

In any case, we're going to take a bit of a break from basketball as well, but should be back at it with a full preview of the big game from Paulie tomorrow.

Swimming Beats Cincinnati

The UofL Cards beat Cincinnati by a total score of 165-91.  The Senior Day win....yes, really, the swimming regular season is now wrapped up, and it caught me by surprise, too...should help the Cards hang onto, and maybe slightly improve their 19th ranking.

The best results of the event for the Cards were in the 100 yard backstroke, where the Cards owned the whole podium in a 1-2-3 finish by Ashlyn Schoof's (53.62), Tatiana Salcutan (53.80), and Paige Hetrick (54.37).  Also the 200 butterfly, with Tristen Ulett (1:57.36), Carley Lowe (1:58.51), and Gabi Albiero (1:58.89) taking the podium.  Maria Sumida was fourth (1:59.58) in exhibition.  The 200 backstroke with Tatiana Salcutan (1:56.49), Ashlyn Schoof (1:58.37), and Abby Hay (2:00.05) forming the trio.

The Cardinals also took wins in the 200 medley relay, the 100 freestyle, the 200 freestyle (with a 2nd place finish as well), the 100 breaststroke, the 50 freestyle, and the 100 butterfly.

It was a good outing for the Cards, after the men's side of the squad got the win over Cincinnati in a session earlier in the day.

Swimming will be back in action next Friday and Saturday, the 12th and 13th, at the Ralph Wright for the "Louisville First Chance" as a tune up for the ACC Championships the week after in Greensboro.

Women's Tennis Sweeps Another

Tennis has also been in action, and they're just getting their season underway.  We don't have to worry about Senior Day for Tennis until April.  Normally Tennis gets their season started in the fall, takes a little bit of a winter break, and then has the bulk of their season in the spring.  This year, of course, the whole fall portion of the schedule didn't happen, and the first tournament of the spring season at Notre Dame got cancelled because of Covid.

So Tennis is really just getting underway for the year, and so far, so good.  In non-conference play so far, the Cards haven't lost even a single individual match, yet.  Both overall matches have been won by 7-0 scores, and even in the doubles matches where best two out of three individual matches wins the overall doubles points, the Cards have gone 6-0.

I don't want to get expectations too high, as tennis is another sport where the ACC excels and the Cards have a habit of waltzing through non-conference play before hitting the buzz-saw of conference matchups.

The latest match was against Miami (OH), and in it, the Cards only lost a single set, total.

On a very minor side note, the gocards.com write-up of the tennis match was written by Hollyn Barr taking a break from the field hockey cage.  It's not uncommon for players of various sports to intern with the athletic department and take on roles like this.  It has at times been a chance for the Cardinal Couple crew to meet and chat with various athletes, such as when Yacine Diop ran the scoreboard in the softball press box a couple of years back.

Well done to the tennis squad, and Barr in their roles.  The tennis squad will be back in action Friday afternoon against Wichita State, in Wichita.  No word on Barr's next duties.

Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast

Basketball may have had a slight break, but The Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast didn't take a break from covering them, that's for sure.

It was over an hour of recap, analysis, and preview of Cards basketball.  It was good fun with lots of games to cover.  Check it out!

Sunday Swimming and Volleyball -- Sunday Cardinal Couple

Swim Swam to Victory

The Women's Swimming and Diving team swam (and dove) their way to victory yesterday at the SMU Classic in Dallas, TX.  This was a 6 team event, and the Cards edged out 2nd place Auburn by 2 points.  UofL finished with 333 total points, Auburn at 331; other schools were NorthWestern with 315, Iowa with 242, Miami with 230, and host SMU with 223.

Its very early in the swimming and diving season, so what rankings I can find don't feel very meaningful.

Molly Fears continues to improve on the diving part of the team, getting just barely edged out of the top spot on the podium.  The Cards picked up victories in both the A and B finals of the 200 butterfly, with Grace Oglesby winning the A final with a 4 second margin, and Sophie Cattermole winning the B final with a time that would have seen her losing only to Oglesby if it were in the A final.  Both swims were NCAA B cuts, establishing both swimmers as early possibilities for the NCAA Championships in the spring.  The Cards picked up lots of other second place finishes in events, tallying enough points for the overall team win at the end of the event.

Of course, UofL is competing without recent superstars that have come through the program like Kelsi Dahlia nee Worrell and Mallory Comerford.  There are still some swimmers on the squad that have gotten some attention here at Cardinal Couple in the past, including seniors Grace Oglesby, Lainey Visscher, and Sophie Cattermole along with Molly Fears on the Diving side of the house.

When will the next superstar swimmer emerge from this UofL program?  It's really not a question of "If", more just a question of "When."

We'll be keeping an eye on it, and in the meantime, cheering this team, and emphasis on team this year, to victory.

Other Stuff

There was a pretty crazy football game in Winston-Salem last night by the sounds of my Twitter timeline.  The rumor is that the Cards were victorious there as well. Paulie made the trip to Wake Forest, actually saw Louisville Volleyball in attendance there and hoarsely reports that someway, somehow...the Cards won a wild-west shoot-out 62-59 in the town of cigarettes. .

Wait, I thought it was football?

"Satterdays" are back, and, despite the huge number of points opponents are scoring -- as long as you are out-scoring them you are collecting "W"'s at the end of the contest.

On Tap For Today

Volleyball

The VolleyCards will be looking to make it a pair of wins over Wake Forest this weekend when they meet on the volleyball court at 1pm today.  The team did go to the football game last night to support their friends and fellow athletes on the field.

We should get a Louisville victory in Winston-Salem today, while the Demon Deacons are 11-5 overall, they're only 1-4 in conference so far, and their non-conference schedule?  Well, it wasn't littered with powerhouse teams.  There's a loss to Elon in there, but in conference, while the Deacs did get a win over Syracuse, the Orange don't exactly look like they're playing up to their usual levels this year.

The Deamon's offense mostly runs through #1 Peyton Suess with #14 Caitlyn Della and #10 Caroline Kuhn contributing kills as well.  The setter will be #4 Madeline Holt with #2 Caitlin Clark in the Libero jersey.  Look for Della and #8 Zoe Gonzalez to provide the strongest presence at the net for blocking.

Soccer

The Soccer squad went north to South Bend and will take the field against Notre Dame.  The rankings, as inconsistent as they may be between different sources, suggest that the Cards should be able to come away with a win in this one, with the Cards being ranked from 10th to 16th, and Notre Dame seemingly unranked anywhere.

Hard to believe that there won't be something flying, bouncing or getting moved in some type of fashion on Floyd Street today.

Cardinal Couple Radio Hour

The Cardinal Couple Radio Hour was on the air yesterday, though we were down to just two of us in the studio.  Case and I held down the fort and managed to put a decent show together, I believe.

In a move that will shock you, we covered, the past week in UofL Women's Sports with a look ahead to future matchups.  Field Hockey, Soccer, Volleyball...the usual suspects were all in the discussion.

I mentioned a non-UofL volleyball match that happened last evening, a top 15 matchup between #13 Creighton, and #10 Marquette in the Big East.  Creighton did win that one.  Unsurprisingly, the match went 5 sets and there were some extra point sets in the mix.  I predicted a good match there, and that's what happened.  It can be seen on the Big East's Youtube channel if you have an interest in watching a really great non-UofL volleyball match.

In any case, you can catch the replay of the CCRH, at the usual Facebook Live link:
