Comtemplating a Louisville WBB Top Ten team...Great Radio today! -- SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

DECISIONS AND DEBATES ON LOUISVILLE WBB'S ALL-TIME TOP TEN

The question was posed to me a couple of days ago.

"Who's in the top ten of all-time Louisville women's basketball team?"

It is not an easy answer...not one that you can just roll off the top of your head with no thoughts or delay.

Yes, there are several players that come to mind immediately for me...Angel McCoughtry, Shoni Schimmel, Sara Nord and Jazz Covington get nominated and added in the first round of discussions. I'd still take those four and a power forward and take on most any women's baskeball squad you could put together.

It get a bit more difficult after that. Do I include current players? Am I looking purely for scoring capabilities or overall success? How far back in the history of Louisville basketball do I go? How in the world can I trim this team to just ten?

All relevant questions. Many of you who read this column are what I like to call "AA's" (after Angel) in terms of your interest in Louisville women's basketball. The names Valerie Owens, Sharon Bellamy and Nell Knox may not mean a lot to you...but they were very good players "back in the day" and make my top ten list as well. Valerie (now Valerie Owens Combs) will laugh and wave her hand at me in dismissal when she reads this. We've had this discussion before. She says she's not a top ten, I say she is. I saw her play. She was everything on the court in those early days of Louisville basketball. And, a local gal as well...

Do we add a current player to this list? I'm going to...Myisha Hines-Allen has shown me enough in her two years to convince me she could compete with the previously listed players and I can't wait to see her final two seasons.

To round out my top ten...I'm going with two favorites from a couple of teams that made the final four. No one can debate the impact Candyce Bingham had in her years at Louisville and Monique Reid was "automatic" if you got her the ball down on the blocks.

SONJA PROTESTS THAT THESE TWO WERE NOT PICKED
Yes, I know...there are some very good players who did not make this list. Sonja is frowning because I didn't include Asia Taylor. Nita Slaughter is one that merits consideration. Tia Gibbs, Becky Burke...it was hard to stop at just 10.

Give me your top-ten. We'll see how close we are.

  1. I'm in the "AA" category but have heard enough from long-time fans to include Covington, Knox, Nord and Owens (in alphabetical order) along with McCoughtry and Schimmel. I'm also adding Hines-Allen - during the second half of last season she showed me as much as Angel or Shoni, and I expect more to come from her. So I need three more and, since I lack the "pre-Angel" knowledge to adequately evaluate players like Bellamy, Mattox and Morton, I'll go with what I know and choose Bingham and Reid, with one spot left open.

  5. I'm a huge Shoni Schimmel fan but would take Joan Dunaway (now Joan Dunaway Burks) over Shoni. She currently ranks 17th all time in scoring at U of L with 1185 ponts. It would be much higher had the 3 point shot been in effect when she played. Also had an excellent passer and rebounder.

  6. Any TRUE Cardinal fan knows it's Angel/Shoni first and/or second. No doubts. Myesha may eventually, and probably will, make it an automatic threesome. The rest can be argued for and against.

    2. Not sure it you were implying that I am not a TRUE Cardinal fan or not. If you never had the pleasure of seeing Joan Dunaway play, sorry for you. Everyone gives high accolades to Valrie Owens, who do you think was getting the ball to her or drawing defenders away from her? Joan Dunaway, that's who. The fact that I know that should be proof enough that I AM a true Cardinal fan.
