Goooooood Friday morning readers.
I am so excited that Derby weekend is finally here!! In typical fashion, the Softball Cards hit the road for Derby weekend to free up some hoteling space in town.
Softball
Louisville vs Pittsburgh
With game 1 held on Thursday afternoon UofL moved to 25-23 and 8-14 in the ACC. The Panthers move to 19-30, 6-16 ACC. Alyssa Zabala earned the win making her record 10-9. She completed 6.1 innings, allowing three earned runs while striking out five.
Louisville's offense was lead by Char Lorenz who went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, including her team-leading eighth home run of the season. Despines continued her impressive season with a two-hit, one-RBI performance, while Pickens added two hits and drove in one.
1st inning
The Cards managed to put two runners on early due to Pitt pitching woes but stranded them due to pop ups.
With Zabala starting in the circle, she walked the first batter but the Panthers were also not able to score any runs from it.
2nd inning
3 up, 3 down for the Cards offense and less than 10 pitches for the Panthers pitching staff in the half inning.
Pitt got on the board first when they were able to connect for a single to CF, advanced on a SAC bunt and then a double to CF scoring the first runner in the game.
Pitt up 1-0
3rd inning
Easton Lotus finally got the offense going for the Cards singling to LF followed by an RBI single from Chelsea Mack who then advanced to 2nd base on a throwing error from the pitcher. Lookadoo pushed another run across the plate before the double play was executed by Pitt.
3, up, 3 down for the Panthers
Cards up 3-1
4th inning
The Cards had 1 hit and 1 left on base while the Panthers had 2 hits and 2 runners left on base.
5th inning
The bats really started to heat up for the Cards in the fifth when Char Lorenz connected for a homerun over the left field fence to score 2 runs but that would not be all as Lookadoo would push another one across on a double to LCF scoring Despines. Despines walked to get on base.
Pitt would respond going 3 up, 3 down.
Cards up 6-1
6th inning
No scoring changes in the inning by either.
7th inning
Despines and Pickens both homered to extend the UofL lead 8-1.
After a 4 pitch walk and a 7 pitch at bat that resulted in a single and Zabala at the 113 total pitch count mark, Holly pulled Zabala and put Brooke Gray to finish the job. But the Panthers would not be deterred by a fresh arm. They advanced on a wild pitch and scored 2 when Pitt singled to LF. A pop up would end the game.
The Cards win 8-3 !!
The Cards softball squad will be back in action on Oaks Day today with a regular season ended doubleheader against the Panthers..with games at 1 pm and 6 pm. We will be skipping this weekend's podcast recording to celebrate the traditions.
Lets make it a great safe weekend, Louisville!!!
As always,
Go Cards!
Go Cards!
