Another ranked match away from home for #9 Louisville field hockey (3-0) seemed to have no ill effect on the Cards as they defeated #10 Princeton 2-1. The two foes squared off in Philadelphia, less than one hour from the Princeton campus, so even though it wasn't a home game for the Tigers on paper it was more or less a home game for them in terms of fans in the stands.
Penalty corners have been a key contributor to the scoring early this season and it was a corner how Louisville scored their first goal. The Cards earned back-to-back corners midway into the first quarter. Mia Duchars entered the ball where Tatum Kroon received the pass and set it up for Julie Kouijzer. The veteran leader looked to have a goal but a slight deflection knocked the ball to Chloe Cuzzupe who knocked in past the keeper.
Princeton answered with a goal of their own less than a minute prior to the conclusion of the first quarter. A pass to the middle of the box created just enough space for the Tigers to get the ball into the cage.
In clock time, Louisville came back at Princeton in under two minutes, but the break between quarters made real time a bit longer than that. In fact, the break was probably just what the Cards needed to help draw up a scheme on offense for the go ahead goal. Minna Tremonti brought the ball up the field near the right sideline and curved in along the baseline towards the goal. As soon as the keeper came out, Tremonti fed the ball to Tyler Everslage, who had plenty of space for the score.
Defense picked up on both sides in the second half as shots and penalty corners were hard to come by. Each team had a pair of shots on goal, but goalkeepers held their own.
Cuzzupe and Everslage each scored their first goals of the season while Merlijn van der Vegt recorded three saves to up their season total to 14.
Louisville continues the ACC/Ivy League Crossover with a match against Pennsylvania on Sunday at 1:30 pm.
Volleyball Sweeps South Dakota
Sweeps have been common in the Dani Busboom Era for Louisville volleyball (4-0). They logged their third sweep in four matches this season yesterday when they took down South Dakota 3-0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-18). The win is #150 in DBK's young career at Louisville.
Other than a hot start to the third set for the Coyotes, the match felt one-sided in Louisville's favor. The Cards had doubled up South Dakota midway through the first set. Louisville then went on an 11-3 run to close out the second set. They then outscored South Dakota 23-11 after trailing 7-2 in the third set.
12 Cardinals saw floor time. Anna DeBeer and PK Kong each had uncharacteristic outings, hitting -.063 and -0.111, respectively. Aiko Jones (,700), Charitie Luper (.550), and Cara Cresse (.417) covered for them well, though.
Louisville excelled in blocking and aces. The Cards tallied 12 blocks and reached the double-digit mark with 10 aces. They limited South Dakota to negative hitting percentages in the first two sets and .022 for the entire match.
Louisville takes on Northern Kentucky at noon today. Nothing like traveling almost six hours to take on an in-state team that takes 90 minutes to travel to.
