Reliving Volleyball and Basketball this Weekend -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Reliving Volleyball and Basketball this Weekend

Louisville fans have been through quite a roller coaster  ride the last week or so. Volleyball continued to win, including a thriller against Oregon, to advance to the Final Four. Women's basketball announced that Payton Verhulst was transferring. After they fell to MTSU, they turned around to demolish SIUE and then hit the road to take down Kentucky. Men's basketball continued their horrific start to the season. Football saw a head coach bounce out of the city before the players knew and then turned around and saw the hire of another head coach a few days later. At least it seems to plenty of positives for Louisville women's athletics!

The success of Louisville volleyball is catching the attention of every Louisville fan around the world and all eyes look to them in hopes they'll be the first Louisville women's team to win a team NCAA Championship. Louisville women's basketball has been an established program for well over a decade now and has won the hearts of Louisville fans. Following a rivalry game win, the Cards have started working on a win streak.

I thought we could switch things up today and look at some of the highlights from the weekend through the lens of what I saw...

Other News and Notes

-- We are moving up the Cardinal Couple Podcast to 10:00 a.m. this Saturday. Due to other conflicts, we decided that for just this week we would move it up by an hour. The following Saturday is Christmas Eve so the status of a podcast that day is uncertain.

-- Our columnist Jeff McAdams is hoping to travel to Omaha for the Volleyball Final Four. Nothing is finalized but we hope he is able to make the trip to cheer on the Cards.

-- Louisville WBB's Zyanna Walker is NOT taking a redshirt this season. Many of you had asked her status after she saw some action in a couple recent games. This will be her first year of eligibility.

(You knew Jared would have to get a "selfie" in somewhere in this article.)

-- Payton Verhulst announced yesterday she will be transferring to Oklahoma. She won't be able to play with the team this year but will have three years of eligibility remaining.

-- First year head coach Sam Purcell has led Mississippi State to an 8-2 record so far this season. They lost by one at South Dakota State and then fell to Nebraska by eight in Puerto Rico.

Happy Tuesday and Go Cards!

  1. Hello Friends !
    Arthur Here !

That was a great win by y'all over UK ! Liz Dixon's light finally turned on and got downright nasty, belligerent and forceful with those little "Kitties" in the front line ! Go get 'em Liz, I liked your game since Ga.Tech days and wish you'd chose Clemson instead of Louisville ! LOL.

I was tickled to see the Cards focus on finishing layups. Players have to go up strong through somebody with contact. I love how the game is being called right now in women's basketball. They are allowing them to play physical, so it is really their responsibility to go up strong and try to not finish off balance. Then, if they get fouled hard, they have to step up to the line and make free throws
You saw it in the Louisville game vs. KY. You'll see it all season long in the ACC. With Cochran, Dixon, Jones, Robinson and Van Lith, you have those players who can be involved in that contact and score

My Tigers are 8-3 but we really don't have any quality wins. The losses came to South Carolina, Kansas St., and Arkansas and none of those three were close games. I'm figuring we'll get our lumps in the ACC,and we get NC State (oh boy...) to start it out on Sunday.

I do like Amari Robinson and Ruby Whitehorn for us , they're pretty good and Whitehorn is just a freshman.

  3. Great pics ! That's one of the things I like about your site, plentiful pictures. A tough loss for my Cats, but, credit to you Cards. You beat us up pretty well in the paint on both ends of the court and we couldn't get Walker going. Good luck the rest of the way.

Have you all ever considered doing something similar for a site about UK women's athletics? I think our fans would enjoy an approach like this site takes...

    1. Heh...I suspect Paulie (or any of us contributors, really) would be happy to talk to someone about it...give tips and pointers and such, but we're all long-time UofL fans, so I don't think we could, or should, try to do the same for UK.

    2. To amplify what Jeff said and add a bit, it look a long time to get together a crew like we have now to cover UofL women's sports. The main thing here is that we all are huge UofL fans, so for us to report on UK women's athletics daily just wouldn't come from the heart or be emotionally vested in. .

There are UK sites out there that do a fine job of covering the Cats. I suggest you read those and hope for the occasional women's article.

  4. What is latest on Mobley? Was just thinking how much fun she'd have on this squad.
