Louisville Set to Face Duke Sunday -- SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Cards Celebrate New Year's with Games

Unlike the winter break that collegiate athletics teams usually get over the Christmas holiday (unless there's a bowl game in that time frame), New Year's Eve and Day are just more days on the calendar. Louisville men's basketball will face Kentucky today in a game that opened with a 22.5 spread and has already been bet up to UK -23.5. We don't need to talk about that one at all. Maybe Louisville will manage to cover.

Louisville women's basketball will have a challenge of their own tomorrow when they face Duke on the road. The Blue Devils are 12-1 this year with the lone loss coming on a neutral court against Connecticut. Their wins aren't necessarily stunning, but they have beaten three teams from Big 6 conferences in out of conference play and their last game was a 14-point road win over 6th-ranked NC State on Thursday . Kara Lawson has the team playing well on both ends, as they're averaging 71.8 ppg and allowing just 49.8. While there have been a few games swinging those averages a bit, they didn't score fewer than 66 points in December and haven't allowed more than 58, which came against NC State.

The Cards will have the tough task of facing the unfriendly confines of Cameron Indoor Stadium for this one, where Duke is undefeated this season. With both teams playing their last game on Thursday and having the same amount of rest, this one will be a straight-up matchup. Louisville is quite familiar with one key contributor on the team, as Elizabeth Balogun is second on the team in scoring despite just seven starts. She has played in all 13 games and has the fourth most minutes, though, so it's clear she is the first player off the bench. Balogun is one of eleven transfers on the Duke roster, which is almost double the number of players that originally started in Durham. With six grad transfers and two seniors, Duke is looking to make the most of this season. Louisville will have their hands full as they try to rain on the Blue Devils' parade.

The game is set to air on ACC Network Extra and tips off at noon eastern.

No Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast

As we discussed last week, we won't have a podcast this week as we take off the last day of the year. If you haven't had the chance to listen to last week's episode yet, it was an annual retrospective, so it's still plenty relevant. We should be back next week with more in the joy and excitement of UofL Women's Athletics.

Have a safe and happy New Year!

Until next time, Go Cards!

WBB slices Syracuse 86-77 -- HAPPY NEW YEAR -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

FRIDAYS WITH DARYL

(Zyanna waits patiently for Daryl's report)

Good morning and welcome to the end of the 2022 year.   Weird to think where we (me) started the year (with COVID on the couch)...to now, a homeowner and a cat mom and currently enjoying a holiday break off from my new job at UofL.  Here's to a happy and healthy 2023 to you and yours and thank you for spending your days with us.

Louisville WBB

Cards win 86-77!!

UofL moves to 11-4 on the season and second in the ACC behind Notre Dame.

Hiya, E !

The Cardinals returned to conference play at the Yum! Center Thursday evening to play against Syracuse and welcome some familiar faces to town.  UofL and the Orange are naturally rivals but with the former 'Cuse guard Chrislyn Carr in a Louisville jersey, that added a little extra heat and add on the fact that last year's Cuse-to-Cards transfer and fan favorite Emily Engstler made an appearance for the game.

Whaddya know, Mo?

Mo Reid was also at the YUM! taking in the contest. Rumor has it she's headed back to Europe to play ball in a few days. With Mo, Emily, Cortnee and Jess Laemmle in the house, that's not a bad alumnae team. Maybe add Valerie Owens, who is always there with daughter Gia as a Courtsider and that's a powerful lineup.

It was a good game if you had the chance to watch, I imagine.   I was not in attendance for Thursday's game expecting I would be able to view on ACCNX as advertised... to my disappointment,  when I got home just in time for tip-off it said the event was blacked out in my area.  groan.

Would you care for a "T" Coach?

Happy to report a Cardinal victory for the WBB squad 86-77 over Syracuse!  Four starters scored in double figures,  Hailey Van Lith with 24 points on 9-14 shooting with 5 rebounds, 6 assists and just 1 turnover.   Olivia Cochran and Morgan Jones added 15 points, 7 rebounds and 1 assist... each.  Chrislyn Carr had 12 points, 3 assists and 2 rebounds.

What, I get "T", too?

Liz Dixon struggled to avoid fouling and found herself with 3 fouls before the half after not even playing most of the first quarter.  A big third quarter put the Cards in control of this one when Jones had 8 points and HVL and Carr each with 6.   Mykasa Robinson still in concussion protocol.  Norika saw some minutes with her family in attendance,

(Let's just curl up with a basketball and watch this one...)

Syracuse jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Olivia and HVL took control of the Cardinal offense with a few driving layups and a jumper to make it 8-5.    Ill let the editor make a note of what was witnessed by the rest of the Cardinal Couple crew at the Yum when Walz got a Technical foul called on him with just 3 minutes off the clock...  Go ahead Paul..

(EDITOR NOTE: There was a difference of opinion between Coach Walz and the refs on a sequence and Coach used a little language that would probably got him kicked out of Vacation Bible School. Maybe not "T" worth, but pretty salty...back to you...Daryl!)

With some missteps from the Cards to start, the Orange was able to push themselves to a 17-10 lead.  Walz substituted a couple players and Nyla Harris made a first quarter appearance.   She was a spark on offense giving the Cards second chance opportunities and getting to the free throw line but she did struggle going 2-8 on the evening.

All in all, HVL had 9 points and went 4-5 while Olivia went 3-3 for 6 points.  Syracuse's Teisha Hyman had 11 of her 27 points in the first quarter.

Louisville looked to get a lead on Syracuse early in the 2Q but the Orange would not go away easily as they were able to linger around...pulling it within 2 points 36-34 with 3 minutes left till halftime.   As a team, the Cards shot almost 43% and held Syracuse to just 5 made buckets in the quarter.  Both teams had 8 turnovers in the first half.

Morgan Jones had a big third quarter to put the Cards up on Syracuse going 4-6 and grabbing 3 rebounds.   It was another big quarter for Cuse's Hyman too, as she went 5-6 with 13 points.   Louisville outrebounded Syracuse 10-2 with Nyla Harris grabbing 4 of her 10.

The Cards lost the final quarter by 5 points but were able to build an 18 point lead over Syracuse early in the quarter.  HVL and O both played the most with 9 minutes each. Walz did empty the bench at the end and the Cuse picked up some garbage points then.

The Cards could have used world-famous bowhunter
Fred Bear's accuracy from the free throw line Thursday night

FREE THROWS --  Louisville went 50% at the free throw line going 9-18 at the stripe.  Nyla Harris really struggled at the line with the most attempts for the Cards going 2-8.  Yikes.. Jeff will have her in the gym.  no letter

REBOUNDING --  The Cards dominated the boards 47-31 with Harris leading UofL with 10, 5 at each end.  Nyla is really establishing herself into this rotation and giving the Cards some valuable second chance opportunities.   Capital R

EFFORT/EXECUTION --  Both squads received a Technical foul at some point.  UofL had 40 points in the paint and 24 second chance points, 17 team assists and 18 turnovers.  This game just didn't have the feel of domination to put the Cards in national convo.  lower case e

DEFENSE --  1 Block and 3 Steals is not the typical wowing fans are used to seeing out there on the court.  With Robinson still in concussion protocol, the team is having to find other opportunities to take advantage of its opponents.  Capital D

Basketball Hosts Syracuse -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Women's Basketball Hosts Syracuse

Louisville WBB returns to action following an eight-day hiatus from the holiday break to face off against ACC foe Syracuse at 7:00 p.m. at the KFC Yum! Center. This is the first game at home since a December 6 victory against SIUE- 23 days ago.

Tonight's game will be aired on ACCNX with Jess Laemmle and Jeff Greer on call. Those in the Louisville area can also tune into 93.9 FM to hear Nick Curran and Cortnee Walton.

Louisville enters the game with a 10-4 record and riding a five-game win streak. They earned their first conference win at Pitt in mid-December to start conference play off 1-0. The Cards have been outscoring opponents 77.6 - 62.4 while shooting 46.7% from the floor this season. Louisville also has a +5.9 rebounding average per game, but has struggled with turnovers, logging two more turnovers than assists on the season this year.

Syracuse comes into tonight carrying a 10-2 record and winners of five straight. Their record is a bit deceiving with the losses coming to Penn State and Purdue. Their best win is against Wake Forest, who is currently 9-4. Three of their wins came against teams that are one game over .500 while the rest of their wins came against opponents sitting below .500.

Felisha Legette-Jack is in her first year as the head coach of Syracuse. She was previously at Buffalo, where Cardinal Forever Becky Burke currently coaches. Legette-Jack was an All-American during her time as a player at Syracuse from 1984-1989.

Four players average scoring in double figures for the Orange, led by Dyaisha Fair's 19.6 ppg. Dariauna Lewis is averaging close to a double-double with 10.3 ppg and 9.9 rpg. The Orange have a +7.0 rpg average so far this season.

                                                         **********************

Louisville currently holds a 17-10 advantage in the head-to-head record and have dominated at home against the Orange, 10-1.

Louisville will be raising money for the Dick Vitale Fund for Pediatric Cancer at the V Foundation. The goal is $20,000 and over $1000 had already been raised as of last night. You can make a donation by clicking here.

There will also be the first annual Teddy Bear Toss at halftime of the game tonight. The teddy bears and other stuffed animals will go to Ardi's Bears, who gives them to children in need in the Louisville area. Fans who bring a teddy bear to the game will receive a $5 off voucher for the next home game against Georgia Tech on Jan 5th.

OF NOTE

Remember these? What was your favorite rumor of what was
stored in them?

-- The Cards have CC -- Chrislyn Carr on their 2022-23 roster. Carr played at Syracuse in the 2021-22 season. You might also remember EE -- Emily Engstler. She ended up at Louisville after playing at Syracuse.

--Louisville is 25-2 in ACC games at home over the last three seasos and 61-6 since they joined the conference.

-- The Cards are #26th in the AP and the USA DI WBB polls.

We will not be having our Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast on Saturday as we celebrate the New Year. We do plan to be back on air for the first Saturday of 2023. Since this is my last post of 2022, I would like to thank everyone for the constant love and support and am glad to have all of you here sharing in the joy and excitement of Louisville women's athletics! Now, time to finish off 2022 with one more Louisville women's basketball win!

Happy Thursday and Go Cards!

Carr finds right road at Louisville -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

CHRISLYN CARR ACC PLAYER OF WEEK

(Looks like Carr is 'having a ball' at Louisville)

The road that Chrislyn Carr has travelled as been a bit of a bumpy one, with stops at four different colleges, some big successes, the COVID pause and a bit of sightseeing in the great land of ours before she landed at Louisville for her graduate season. With her recent ACC Player of the Week honor, though, it would appear the 5'5" Davenport, IA point guard has found a road that is making her collegiate journey back a successful one.

Her spectacular performance against DePaul was arguably the best outing of her time in college. She scored 21 points, and grabbed 17 rebounds in the Cards 81-67 win against the Blue Demons. Those 17 rebounds were the second most by a guard in the NCAA this season, and tops in the ACC for a guard. And, they were all defensive rebounds, over half of the Cards defensive rebounds for the contest.

Chrislyn Carr is 5'5". I'll repeat that. 5'5"

Carr's journey in basketball began at West High School in Davenport, Iowa . Right off the bat, it was obvious she was something special. She set the school record for points scored when she was a freshman (46), and followed that up with 43 points in a game as a sophomore.

Rock Island, Illinois is right across the Mississippi River from Davenport Illinois and Carr's. family made that 5 mile move to the east when she was a junior in high school. At Rock Island, she was a two-time All-Conference player and a First Team all-state player.

It was enough to get Texas Tech, among many other schools, interested...and that's where she headed for her freshman 2018-19 season. She was the Big 12 Freshman of the Year and averaged 18 points a game. She was All-Big 12 Honorable mention her sophomore year and averaged 13,9 points.

Marlene Stollings was replaced as head coach in Carr's junior year and Carr left after five games to try her skills for Kim Mulkey at Baylor, She did not play during that season of 2020-21 at Baylor, there were questions about eligibility and she left after the season to be one of six transfers to join Syracuse, along with six freshmen for the 2021-22 season.

Chrislyn was the starting point guard for the Orange and played in all 29 games. She averaged 14.2 points per game as a Orange for a year, but entered the transfer portal again at the end of the 2021-22 season and UofL wooed her to the Belknap Campus and a Cardinals uniform.

A lot of travelling. I wonder if she's heard the Johnny Cash song "I've Been Everywhere, Man"?

I've Been Everywhere, Man

At, Louisville...she saw the promise of playing with one of the nation's best scoring guards in Hailey Van Lith, excellent transfer Morgan Jones and the Cards strong front line contingent of Olivia Cochran, Liz Dixon and Josie Williams. She also saw the immediate need for her services as a point-guard. That became even clearer when Ahlana Smith left Louisville to follow Sam Purcell to Mississippi State.

It was more than that, though. At Louisville, she was going to play for a coach who had Final Four experience, who got players to the WNBA and promoted and fostered a winning attitude. It would be different that the failed experiment at Baylor, where Mulkey sat her and then dashed off to go to LSU for the 2021-22 season (for a whole bunch of money) and to where she got her start as a player and assistant coach in the state (at Louisiana Tech).. it was also a chance for Mulkey to test the best in the SEC. and, in her words, go home.

Walz told us that there might be a few rough bumps to smooth out in the 2022-23 season. It takes work and time to get a team together. And, the Cards appear to have survived the rough and unsteady early road and are benefitting from a brand new "Carr" who's helping drive the team, as they head into ACC play. Beware, ACC. Carr is rolling and poses a powerful 1-2 punch with Van Lith.

Cards got guards and they're a dangerous bunch of birds when they do.

Ask Dana. Or A.D... or Angel or Shoni. See what Monique, Kianna, Jude or Arica have to say about it...Ask Bria, J.J., Becky or Tia....they'll tell you. When the Cards are on a roll, it's usually the Cards guards that are assuming control.

Louisville Women's Athletics' 2022 Highlights and Best Moments -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

The last days of 2022 are winding down now that Christmas and many of the major holidays in December have come to a close or are wrapping up. As we all-too-eagerly jump into 2023, it's nice to look back at 2022 and reminisce on many of the great moments that happened.

(whatcha gonna do, with this crew?)

For Louisville Athletics, there were plenty of major events to celebrate and reflect on. We do not cover the men's sports at UofL, but many of the teams had success and postseason appearances such as swim and dive, baseball, tennis, soccer, and football, and we do wish to congratulate those teams on their successes.

We love to cover the "Joy and Excitement of Louisville Women's Athletics" and 2022 was not short on those joyful and exciting moments. We'll take a look at some of the best moments for many of those teams.

Basketball

Without a doubt, the best moment for Louisville women's basketball was their fourth Final Four appearance in program history. The Cards had another impressive season last year and earned a 1-seed before defeating UAlbany, Gonzaga, Tennessee, and Michigan en route to the national semifinals. This season, the Cards are riding a five-game win streak into conference play that includes commanding wins over in-state foes in Bellarmine and Kentucky.

Field Hockey

Louisville field hockey played one of the toughest schedules in the country this season and handled it well. They had five ranked wins and another NCAA Tournament appearance, which is quite a feat seeing only 18 teams make the tournament. The Cards went into a shootout just once this past season- a victory against Duke. After trailing 1-0, Louisville evened the score with seven seconds left in regulation before going on to claim the win in a shootout.

Golf

Making the NCAA Regional round has become a common sight for Louisville women's golf and 2022 was no different. The Cards are fresh off a third place finish (out of 13 teams) at The Club at Old Stone Intercollegiate event, hosted by Western Kentucky.

Lacrosse

ACC play has been brutal the last few years for Louisville lacrosse. The Cards got their first ACC win in program history when they took down Virginia Tech 14-11. Louisville also extended their all-time record against Cincinnati to 15-0.

Soccer

For Louisville women's soccer, the last few years have been anything but kind. The ACC slate has been brutal and over half of those contests this year were against ranked opponents. The best moment for the Cards this year would have to be going on the road to beat ranked Memphis 3-2. The Tigers held a 2-1 lead in the second half before Louisville scored two goals in seven minutes.

Softball

Injuries plagued the season for Louisville softball, but the Cards tried their best to make the most of it. Carmyn Greenwood wrote herself into the Louisville softball record books and became the ninth All-American in program history and the first since 2013. UofL stole a game from a Top 10 Arkansas team early in the season and won three conference series in the back half of the schedule.

Swim and Dive

Success surrounds Louisville Swim and Dive. After taking down Indiana, Kentucky, and Cincinnati in January, the Cards went on to finish third at the ACC Championships and sixth at the NCAA Championships. Several individuals and relay teams posted school records with multiple podium finishes at the NCAA Championships. Else Praasterink also helped pave the way for Louisville divers by setting a program record when she finished 10th in the platform diving at the NCAA Championships.

Track and Field

Did someone say NCAA Champion? Gabriela Leon wrapped up her Louisville career with the track and field program by winning both an NCAA championship and an ACC championship in the pole vault, earning herself All-American honors. She became the first Louisville women's outdoor individual champion and first ever pole vault champion. The Louisville women's pole vault team dominated as a whole all season. The 25th place finish was the highest finish for Louisville women's outdoor track and field team in program history.

Volleyball

Not much could top a 2021 Final Four appearance but Louisville volleyball did just that in 2022. The Cards had another spectacular season that resulted in a national runner-up finish, the highest finish in program history. Louisville also added its third Elite Eight appearance, second Final Four appearance, and a partridge in a pear tree. Well, not quite on the last part, but a baby Busboom Kelly did join us in 2022. The Cards won 12 matches against ranked opponents this year.

Cheer

Although not considered a recognized DI sport, Louisville All-Girl cheer and Louisville Small Co-Ed cheer each won an NCA Championship in 2022, adding to the continuously growing number of championships for the Louisville cheer squads. Combining the All-Girl, Small Co-Ed, and Large Co-Ed squads together, Louisville cheer has accumulated 48 titles.

Talk about one heck of a 2022 year for Louisville women's athletics! We are excited to see what 2023 has in store!

                                                      *************************

We also want to wish Case a happy birthday! Our normal Saturday writer and one of our Cardinal Couple engineers celebrated his birthday yesterday. Rumor has it, Louisville volleyball is undefeated when he attends their matches so maybe we'll have to work on gifting him season tickets next to Jeff next year.

Happy Tuesday and Go Cards!

Post Christmas Means ACC WBB Conference Play heats up -- MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

CONFERENCE PLAY RAMPS UP AFTER CHRISTMAS

The ACC WBB teams and schools are enjoying a brief Christmas break before the conference opponent play gets into full gear. 14 of the 15 schools have actually started play already (UNC being the exception) and there is a six-way logjam at the top of the conference with teams at 1-0. Louisville shares the top spot currently with NCST, Duke, FSU, Syracuse and Notre Dame. These teams haven't looked too bad at all out-of-conference, either, with a combined record of 64-13.

Two of these unblemished ACC squads will fall from the conference undefeated ranks on Dec 29th, when Syracuse travels to Louisville and NC State hosts Duke

Four ACC WBB squads are in the D1 top 10 poll, with Notre Dane at #5, UNC at #6, NC State at #7 and Virginia Tech at #8.

The Hokies are one of three schools at 1-1, along with Virginia and Boston College. Four schools are 0-1 (Ga.Tech, Clemson, Miami and Pitt) while Wake Forest is 0-2.

Does it seem like every ACC squad is better this year? Or, is it just too early to start separating the contenders from the pretenders.

Louisville and Syracuse should be an intriguing match this Thursday. Chrislyn "C.C." Carr will be facing her old school for the first time since leaving during the "Q" shake up. Felicia Leggett-Jack has rebuilt the Orange from those days, 80% of the roster left after Q was investigated among numerous allegations.

Be sure to check Jared's scout and observations on the Orange later this week

It's no longer a three-team WBB conference with UofL, NC State and Georgia Tech.  Walz and other coaches have said publicly that there were 6-10 teams that might be in the hunt or even could win the ACC. I'll state that there are eight squads, the six that are currently undefeated plus Va. Tech and Ga.Tech

In addition to the games mentioned on Thursday, Pitt goes to Wake, VA Tech heads to Clemson, Georgia Tech travels to Virginia, Notre Dame is at Miami and FSU visits UNC. Two or three losses in-conference just might not totally eliminate a team from contending for the title.

Pitt and Wake appear to be destined and slated for the bottom half of the conference. Still, shaking my head over Jen Hoover being let go at Wake, but, did you see her on the UK bench as an assistant when the Cards and Cats tangled in Rupp earlier this month? Kyra Elzy got a great one in adding her to the staff. She still hasn't figured out how to beat Louisville, though.

It looks to be a topsy-turvy ACC WBB Conference this 2022-23 season, as they break from the gate and charge down the stretch the first time.  We'll keep you updated and notified on it as we always do here at Cardinal Couple.

Jones Returns for Volleyball -- SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Aiko Announces One More Year

Louisville fans got an early Christmas present yesterday when Aiko Jones officially announced she’d be returning for the 2023 volleyball season. While there was plenty of speculation that this would be the case, the official word is great to have. Jones’ return means that Louisville will have one less gap to fill from a team that was one win away from a national title. In the 2022 season, Aiko led the team in service aces while finishing second in both kills and blocks. The Cards remain on the hunt for that championship, as we fans hope they can get one before Dani Busboom Kelly “returns home” to Nebraska.

The Joy and Excitement of Louisville Athletics

As the holiday season is upon us, it’s a time for joy and celebration. We here at Cardinal Couple work to bring you the joy and excitement of Louisville women’s athletics every day, but everyone has moments that stand out. We’d like to hear yours. What Louisville women’s sports moment or moments brought you the most joy from this 2022 calendar year? For me, it’s hard not to pick the volleyball team’s run, though not just for the wins. In the last few years, Louisville athletics have struggled, and the volleyball team has been among the most consistent performers. Seeing other fans come to the sport and recognize the specialness of the team has been wonderful to me, as that’s the type of thing we’re trying to inspire with Cardinal Couple. Louisville being a part of getting regular season volleyball back onto major sports networks and winning in front of huge audiences was also pretty nice.
