Hallelujah Friday, y'all. I need this weekend like a pop-tart needs butter.
Don't put away those winter coats and sweaters just yet.. Low temps ahead for the weekend in the 'Ville.
Softball
Cardinals vs Central Michigan W 5-4 9 innings
Taylor Roby in the circle to start for UofL, it was 3 up - 3 down for CMU. Then, Roby homered in the bottom of the first to put the Cards up 1-0 early extending her career total to 32. Roby's HR now ties her for sixth on Louisville's all-time list with Katie Keller (2011-14) and needs one more to move into a tie for fifth with Taner Fowler (2011-14).
With one out, the Chippewas responded with three runs in the top of the third when Roby walked one on a full count and then gave up a single and double before recording another strikeout. The clean up batter fulfilled her duties with a 2 RBI single. CMU up 3-1 on UofL.
Gabby Holloway took over the pitching duties for the Cards in the 4th inning. CMU got a runner on board but she would be stranded on third. Kendall Smith led off with a double but it was followed by 3 fly-outs for UofL.
Top of the fifth, Holloway gave up one hit but held the Chippewas scoreless. The Cards managed to break through offensively in the bottom of the fifth. Jenna Servi and Vanessa Miller both singled and advanced into scoring position on a ground out at first for Easton Lotus. Carmyn Greenwood pushed both runners across the plate with a single to LF. Roby and Smith flied out and struck out to end the comeback efforts for now.
This one went to extras. Runners are placed on second in the top of the eighth, CMU scored from third when their clean up singled to RF. The Cards responded on offense when a Servi RBI single to the pitcher scored the lead off runner but UofL left 3 stranded and forced another inning.
Chardonnay Harris came in to relieve Holloway in the top of the ninth. Harris struck out two batters and another fouled out to the catcher. Who else would save the day for the Cards in this one other than Taylor Roby when she reached 1B on a fielders choice scoring Lotus in walk off fashion!

Carmyn Greenwood and Roby's 2 RBIs lead the offense for Louisville with Servi contributing a run and an RBI on 2 hits in 4 at bats. As a team, the Cards scored 5 runs on 10 hits with 2 doubles and a homerun. They were struck out 8 times, had no stolen bases and left 10 on.
Cardinals vs Valpo W 3-1
Chardonnay Harris picked up where she left off in the circle starting in game 2, CMU going 3 up, 3 down. The Cards offense took advantage of some defensive miscues and had a runner on second to start when Kendall Smith tripled and scored Roby and Lotus, Cards up 2-0. Ally Alexander doubled to RF scoring Smith and putting the Cards up 3-0 after the first inning and for a while.
Both teams left a handful of runners on base through the fifth inning.
Valpo scored with 2 outs in the top of the sixth when a pinch runner scored from 3B off a single to RCF.
Harris pitched all seven innings for Louisville, tossing 104 total pitches to 28 batters faced giving up just 1 run on 3 hits. She forced the Beacons into 9 ground outs and 10 fly outs. UofL moves to 3-0 in the series with Valpo.
The Cards bring a 5 game winning streak into Friday's matchups with Ohio and CMU.

Friday's SB schedule
The Ohio Bobcats (4-10) are led at the plate by Brooke Rice with a .371 batting average and a 1.071 on-base slugging percentage which ranks 12th in the Mid Atlantic Conference. Allie England ranks 14th in the conference with a .362 batting average and .872 on-base slugging percentage.
Cardinal Couple Radio Hour - As far as I know, the whole gang is on board for radio this weekend. We will have plenty of softball to cover as well as what we can envision for the WBB squad in the big dance. Tune in at 11 a.m.

Interesting. I have never tried butter on a pop-tart but I've never tried cream cheese on one like a friend does. I have experienced the infamous top of the roof of the mouth burn which occurs if you don't let the doggone thing cool after removing from the toaster.
ReplyDeleteSoftball has a healthy pitching staff this year and that can make a world of difference when you play in classics and mini tournaments.

Glad to see Cards Softball is off to a good start. For being relatively new to the sport, my Tigers aren't doing too bad either but Virginia Tech sure had our number recently. I really like our pitcher Cagle.
Looking forward to an NCAA WBB Pick Em as well as a tournament. Even though I'm from the state, I hope someone can knock off South Carolina.
Paulie, I enjoyed talking with you the other night on the phone. Just remember God has a plan for all of us and sometimes it's darkest just before the dawn. Stay strong.
