Softball Falls to Miami -- ACC WBB Pick Em -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Second Inning Dooms Cards Softball at Miami (OH)

A strong second inning for Miami (OH) helped the Redhawks down Louisville, 6-4, in Oxford, Ohio. Miami pieced together a five-hit, five-run inning highlighted by an rbi double and a three-run homer.

It was Louisville to get on the board first when Vanessa Miller's rbi groundout in the second inning drove in Ally Alexander, who hit doubled earlier in the inning. However, Miami responded quickly in the bottom half of the inning. The bleeding was stopped when Carmyn Greenwood caught a foul ball near left field to close out the inning.

A solo shot in the fourth inning added another run for the Redhawks, but Louisville pieced together a small rally the following frame. Jenna Servi led of the inning with a single, but looked to be in danger when she made it to third but had a pair of outs looming over her. Korbe Otis was determined to drive in Servi and did so with a hit to center field. She was rewarded when Taylor Roby followed her with a two-run home run to right field.

The Cards had the go ahead run at the plate with runners on first and second in the final inning, but were not able to knock any of the runs in.

Roby was credited with the loss and fell to 2-3 in the circle this year. The loss knocked Louisville down to 8-6 on the year while the Redhawks improved their record to 4-6.

Louisville begins a 14-game home stand this weekend when they host the Cardinal Classic. The Cards will face Hofstra (2x), Illinois (2x), and Western Michigan.

ACC Women's Basketball Tournament

We have gotten through the first day of the ACC Women's Basketball Tournament. Three games down, 11 to go.

13-seed Clemson upset 12-seed Syracuse, 88-69, in the first game of the day. Between Delicia Washington going off for 31 points and 11 rebounds and the Orange going 4-24 from three-point range, Syracuse struggled from the start. We blame the Caridnal Couple Chimps, or Arthur for monkeying around with the rims.

10-seed Duke powered through with a strong second half comeback to slip past 15-seed Pitt, 55-52. Shayeann Day-Wilson led the Blue Devils with 22 points. The Panthers had a 14 point lead at one time, but failed to fire in the fourth quarter. .

In the evening game, 11-seed Wake Forest had early struggles before rallying in the fourth quarter to take down 14-seed Virginia. The Cavaliers had a pair of 11-point scorers, but could not contain Jewel Spear down the stretch as the senior finished with 23 points for the Demon Deacons.

In today's action, 5-seed Virginia Tech hosts 13-seed Clemson at 11:00 a.m. 8-seed Boston College and 9-seed Florida State will follow right after at approximately 2:00 p.m. There will be a short intermission before 7-seed Miami and 10-seed Duke square off at 6:00 p.m. 6-seed Georgia Tech and 11-seed Wake Forest will wrap up Thursday's action around 8:00 p.m. Spoiler: It most likely won't start until after 8:30.

Cardinal Couple ACC Pick Em

Now, for what everyone is waiting for... results after the opening day. We had 26 total entries - a new record for our ACC Pick Em! 16 brackets have Louisville winning it all. There are four brackets each with NC State and Notre Dame taking the crown. Clemson and Virginia Tech each had one pick.

After the first day, everyone has at least one correct pick, so no 0-3 brackets. That's always a promising sign. We have four geniuses who went 3-0 yesterday- Nick O, Kenneth Stark Sr, Joe Hill, and Thomas Irwin (Daryl's boyfriend). There are 17 brackets sitting at 2-1 and five brackets at 1-2.

Three brackets already have one incorrect guess in today's games based off results from yesterday. The poor Cardinal Couple Chimps are hurting big time with a pair of wrong guesses today and a wrong guess on Friday... ouch.

Clemson topping Syracuse did some pretty heavy damage and made 12 brackets imperfect. Seven brackets took a hit with Pittsburgh falling to Duke. Eight brackets had a red mark when Wake Forest advanced past Virginia in the evening game.

None of the Cardinal Couple Crew members have a perfect bracket after just three games. And y'all look to us for women's sports expertise. In all seriousness, Paulie, Jeff, Case, and Daryl do an excellent job with their in-depth coverage, knowledge, and research on the various Louisville women's sports. It's no small task to ask when Louisville has 12 recognized women's programs and I admire and appreciate their hard work and dedication.

What will today's action bring?

A Bit of Personal News...

(Jared now has the risk level responsibility
of letting Freddy interact with State Fir attendees)
.

When I told my family last week that I had exciting news, many of them guessed it involved a pregnancy or purchasing a house. I laughed in their face at both. But I did have exciting news.

Effective the beginning of this week, I accepted a promotion to become a commercial underwriter for Mr Freddy Farm Bureau. Just 13 months into my career there, it certainly is a big moment to continue to advance and grow within the company. For UofL sports, the new position works the same hours as the old position so I will still have plenty of opportunities to get out to UofL games.

Happy Thursday and Go Cards!

Jared

  4. Glad to have gone through the first day unblemished. I like my chances to stay that way with VT, FU, Miami and GT -- although Boston College doe worry me.

I agree with kstarksr. Clemson has two All ACC team players in Washington and Robinson in my opinion. Syracuse is a major rebuild in progress.

I hope the Cards get Duke. Katie Meier is one of the best in preparing for game and if they advance, Miami could give us a rough time. We were lucky to get out of there in the regular season with a win. Duke does not worry me. We'd shut down Balogun and their freshman guard. .

  7. Nice VT win.

I was looking at the picks, is Jared exempt from picking a point total? I didn't see one in his picks. I don't think he should be. Paulie, you reminded me to get a point total in. Do the same with Jared.

Well, we gave it a try. Got one game further than I thought we might.

That FSU win was one exciting contest! Give BC credit for never giving up. Looking forward to Duke and Miami next. Got a full belly and a couple drinks in me.
