Sawyer Wins ITA Fall Classic -- Which Seniors are Staying -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

 Sawyer Wins ITA Fall Classic

We move away from some of our major fall sports for a moment to congratulate and gloat about another of our wonderful women student-athletes at Louisville. Chelsey Sawyer won the ITA Fall Classic for Louisville women's tennis at Georgia Gwinnett this weekend.  Sawyer is a new face to the team this year after transferring in from Penn State.

To claim the crown, Sawyer had to face five opponents.  She took down Agda Laasko 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round.  She followed up the sweep with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Sasha Hartje in the second round. In the quarterfinals, Sawyer defeated Taylor Dean 6-2, 6-2.  She had a little tougher of a match-up in the semifinals, but ultimately beat Sofia Pinedo 6-4, 6-4.

The finals were a much closer match that saw Walker defeat Sydney Flesch 7-6 (7), 7-5 (5).

The ITA Fall Classic had strict protocols.  Players had to use hand sanitizer before matches and during each break.  The could only use their own towels, water, and equipment.  When passing balls to their opponent, players were only permitted to use their shoes or rackets.

We are excited to have Walker join UofL women's tennis and a win in the ITA Fall Classic is one heck of an entrance.

Which Seniors are Staying?

With Sunday being Senior Day for Women's Soccer we have to raise a question: Which seniors are staying?

The roster lists six seniors on the roster: Emina Ekic, Taylor Kerwin, Lana Batson, Amari Hopkins, Nadege L'Esperance, and Gabby Kouzelos.  However, only the first four were recognized Sunday.

The NCAA did grant an extra year of eligibility to all fall student-athletes so that could factor into it.

Perhaps the four players recognized have decided that they will continue their journey and graduate this year.  Or maybe Kouzelos and L'Esperance have decided they are 100% coming back.  We have not received any confirmation on any of our Cards yet, but it does allow the imagination to run wild.  For now, we will continue to support the Cards.

They Say It's Your Birthday!

From all of us at Cardinal Couple, we'd like to extend Happy Birthday greetings to University of Louisville head Women's Basketball Coach Jeff Walz

Try to  remember Louisville Women's Basketball before Coach Walz came to Louisville. I'm sure Paulie could run down some highlights and accomplishments -- but, for many of us, Walz is the architect who has built the program into the national powerhouse it is today.

Many more to you, Coach, and best wishes of the day!  If you follow Coach on Facebook, give him a shout today.

Happy Tuesday and Go Cards!

  1. What a boon it would be if WSOC could get Kouzelos and Ekic back.

    1. I agree with you, Nick. That's two stars that could help propel next year's team to greatness.
