Walz Hits 299... Sports Playing Today... Final Four -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Jeff Walz Nears the 300 Win Mark

The victory over Oregon State not only sent UofL WBB to the Final Four, but it brought Jeff Walz within one win away from 300 wins at Louisville.

His record of 299-95 (0.759) is the best of any coach in Louisville women’s basketball history.  A win against Mississippi State Friday night would be a nice milestone to add to a historic season.  Let’s hope he finishes with 301 going into the offseason.

Lax Visits Brown

At 1:00 p.m., today, you can catch Louisville Lacrosse taking on Brown in the large state of Rhode Island.  The school, located in Providence, has close to 9,400 students, and charges an arm and a leg and a few other body parts to attend the high-academic-profile school.

The Bears are 5-4 on the season and carry a 3-1 homefield record.  Keep an eye on Brown’s leading scorer Risa Mosenthal.  The attacker has 35 goals on the season.  Louisville’s Tessa Chad and Caroline Blalock are tied for first for the Cards with 33 apiece.

Louisville is 6-5 on the season.  They lead the all-time series against Brown 2-0, winning in Orlando last year and at home in 2016.

The Ivy League Network will have video, but unless you are subscribed to the ILN you won’t be able to view it.  If anyone has login information to view that feel free to share with the rest of us!

Asia Durr Named All-American

It is quite an honor to be named an All-American and is Durrrr-ific to be named to the first team.  “Nite-nite” joins Sabrina Ionescu (Oregon), Kelsey Mitchell (Ohio State), Katie Lou Samuelson (UConn), and A’ja Wilson (South Carolina) on the list.  Nobody tell Muffet that Arike Ogunbowale was named to the second team.

Golf Concludes Anuenue Spring Break Classic

No matter what place you finish I consider a trip to Hawaii a pretty good time.  Women’s golf finishes up the Anuenue (Rainbow) Spring Break Classic today.  They are in a tight race against Hawaii, Oregon State, Santa Clara, and Long Beach State.

This complex sport involves yelling “fore”, scoring a six, but writing down “five”.

Softball Visits Lipscomb

Hop on I-65 and head south for about two and a half hours and you can catch softball taking on Lipscomb in the Music City.  The Cards have struggled, going 2-4 in their last six games.  They hope to turn things around against the 19-9 Bisons.  (Note: Lipscomb athletics has the official name listed as “Bisons” and not “Bison” on their website.)

A midweek win over a non-conference opponent doesn’t do much in terms of strength of schedule, but the 22-9 Cards are looking for as many wins as they can get as they are now in the back half of the season.

Danielle Watson and Megan Hensley have had solid seasons in the circle so far this season and both sit at ERA’s of under 2.7.  The duo have a combined 159 strikeouts compared to 155 hits allowed and 91 walks.

Offensively, Louisville has struggled to put runs on the board.  Perhaps the bats can get hot tonight and stay hot for the remainder of the season.

The game is listed as ESPN3 for viewing purposes so have a smartphone or computer handy and ready to go.

Home Run counter: Megan Hensley (2), Caitlin Ferguson (2), Jenna Jordan (2), Nicole Pufahl (1), Alison Szydlowski (1), Riley Schindler (1), Sidney Melton (1).

Cardinal Couple Prepares for the Final Four

Paul and I received confirmation of our media passes yesterday so we will be in attendance to cover Louisville vs Mississippi State Friday night at 7:00 pm.  Our courageous leader will face the never-ending line of media on the row giving live updates and maybe a few Tweeted typos as the game progresses.  I will join the interesting ranks of the photographers as we all mumble and groan over the ref getting in the way of what would have been a perfect shot.

Enjoy your Wednesday and I hope to see many of you in a couple of days!

  1. Paulie and Jared, if you run into Danielle Lerner, Tim Sullivan or someone else from the Courier Journal in Columbus, you might ask why there is not one article in today's sports section about WBB. There are pictures on Page A-3 and a promo for a Friday "special section", and that's it.

I can understand all of the Chris Mack articles, but in addition there is "why would Romeo Langford go to Vanderbilt" along with articles about a possible UK recruit and a former UK recruit who is playing for Michigan.

    Wow.

    1. One of the reasons we quit taking the C-J. Calls to complain were responded to with "we print what people want to read" without giving any credence to the fact that we were calling because we want to read about women's sports.

    2. Paulie and I sat with Danielle, Scott Utterback, and Sam Upshaw at breakfast before the Elite Eight. They explained how the physical version of the newspaper doesn’t mean as much anymore. The folks in charge of placement in the newspaper and what makes the cover don’t always care too much about the non-Big Two at UofL and UK.

However, online has grown quite a bit and UofL women’s basketball is constantly featured in one of the prime time spots on their online version. As of 10:53 am there’s an article about WBB in the Final Four as one of the ten featured articles. The sports section online has a couple featured stories about WBB.

Personally, I don’t read the physical copy anymore because I’m never home long enough to sit and read it, plus I don’t want to pay the paper subscription. Online i can read anywhere and is a cheaper subscription.

I fully understand the frustration with the paper editors constantly ignoring UofL WBB, but the CJ has tried to move to a more virtual look over recent years and WBB receives their fair share of the spotlight there.

    3. When I made my original post this morning there was the one article about WBB on the home page but when I clicked on Sports there were zero articles. I see now that they've put up an article about AC.

I think that Danielle Lerner does a great job, but still..........

    4. Sac Bee Monday had 1 AP article on write ups of the L'ville and Oregon St game and UCLA/Ms St. They had another separate write of the games playing that night UConn/SC and ND/Oregon
Then, a third WBB story on UD Davis's NIT run
      Not shabby.
I didn't check the San francisco paper but I would bet they ran stories also minus UC Davis. Local paper coverage is crucial. If SF paper can cover Cal and Stanford Courier J should be able to cover womans bball.

  2. I'll agree here wit a lot of what Jared commented on. I do like Danielle and think she gets some really great article up on the internet version of the C-J.

Sullivan is a joke. He finds it hard to stay awake during post-game pressers and has the personality of a wet shoe. They should reassign him to writing obituaries or garage sale information.

C-J photo guys are great, especially Scott Utterback. The man can put away some bacon, as well...

  3. Anybody go to the sendoff yesterday? Saw some stuff on TV about it, including your former writer. I can't tell you how happy I am that she is a ex-writer. Maybe she's a good fan but she just seems interested in drawing attention to herself.

    1. I did not attend the sendoff. I'll see plenty of the team starting Friday. A nice fan event, though, and...yes...there was a presence from what WHAS TV describes as "one of UofL women's basketball's biggest fans."

No comment on that here except they may have been going for a multi-level and multiple meaning description? Those folks at WHAS TV Sports are an interesting bunch, for sure.

    2. We were there yesterday. It was a nice, informal event. Glad we were there. Pep band was great. It was especially gratifying to see how several of the players went out of their way to acknowledge the kids who were there.

  4. I have no idea whatsoever is in the print edition of the CJ, but Danielle Lerner has great online articles. Have especially enjoyed her stories about individual players.

    1. I just got a chance to read her article about the expected starters for the Final Four. To me, most of it was already known, but for many readers it is very informative. I always like reading about the random and fun facts about players, coaches, and teams. Danielle does an excellent job.

  5. LOL. Not sure if the rest of the South End considers Fern Creek in the "South End" clique. We got our own vibe going out here. I'd say we're more "South East" but don't go tossing us in with J-Town. LOL

    2. Right you are! Threw a lot of strikes at Thelmal Lanes, knocked back a few at Kelly's and Sonja's late Mom lived off Bethany. Spent a lotta time in "lively Shively", PRP and Valley Station.

  6. I don't like hearing Walz swear. Have more class and keep your hands off the kids butts. Sorry for being a hater Jeff!!

  7. Sounds like guys like Sullivan just take up space. Get someone in their that's enthusiastic about the team. That's a huge missed opportunity this team gets minimal coverage in the local paper. Even sports radio this week should be giving them some time. Those written stories circulating lately about why WBB goes nowhere due to lack of coverage are true. Vollyball continues its slow insidious creep getting the taller athletes from bball. It's not as cool to be a basketball player like it used to be.

  8. Walz does a fantastic job of letting the media know he appreciates the coverage. The fact he has staff put a book full of articles and highlights for each player at the end of the year is pretty pretty gooood.

Mack just used the phrase "work my a$$ off" in a widely covered presser. With his kids in the room.
Not exactly sure what Walz said, but geez!

  11. He was kind of dumb letting the public know he’s laughing at fans telling him to get his hands off his players butts. In this climate anything at L’ville right now can be misperceived. Sorry but it’s reality.

    1. The fan base is family oriented with kids and Seniors. When he laughs at fans concerns he doesn’t “get” his customer base. There are a lot of fans that don’t appreciate it. He admits he replies with a fake apology. I know it’s kind of funny but he’s condescending to the fans
