Softball Wins, Louisville Women's Basketball today -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

                                            **********ACC Roundup**********

Four games in the quarterfinals Friday to determine Saturday's semifinals. Let's take a look.

NC State 51 - Duke 45

Ms Wuf boogies, y'all...
The Wolfpack came thru when they needed to in the 4th quarter to send Duke home to start the days action. At 36-35 after three quarters, Chelsea Nelson took over for her Pack and ended the game with 15 points and 22 rebounds. Duke was led by Lexie Brown's 16 but the Wolfpack kept her bottled up during crunch time in the fourth. NC State may want to work on their 3-point shooting (2 for 17) but when you win the rebounding battle against Duke 47-37 and Nelson is grabbing everything in sight, maybe that doesn't matter. The Pack gets Louisville in a rematch where the Cards blew them out early in Reynolds on New Year's Eve Day but rallied back to lose just by eight (55-47). Ms. Wuf in town another day....sweet!

Louisville 73 - Virginia Tech 70

It was the Jersey girls (Myisha and Sam) who led the Cards back in a close affair in Game Two.
Louisville trailed by nine after one and six at the half. Louisville finally grabbed the lead in the third period and had their largest lead in that period (nine) but Tech fought the Cards to the end. 21 pts. for Myisha, 17 for Sam and we won't go into Asia's off-afternoon...we'll just compliment her on hitting all four free throws. In a game where Myisha drained a three and Jess Laemmle grabbed a rebound (in the first half)...yeah it was a crazy afternoon. Let's hope Jazz's ankle isn't too sore for Saturday and they've sent out a search party for Asia's jumper.

Notre Dame 83 - Virginia 47

Notre Dame jumped on the Cavaliers early in Game 3 and Irish eyes were smiling all afternoon in the 36-point dismantling of Wahoo. With four players in double-figures and a 42-14 scoring edge in the paint, Muffet McGraw's marauders made mince-meat out of the Virginia front line all day. Here's the kicker. We all Notre Dame never fouls and the crew of Bryan Brunette, Bruce Morris and Jennifer Rezac only whistled them for five the entire game. Five. The Irish have been running people out of the gym lately, with 80 or more points in 11 out of their last 12 games since Louisville beat them in mid-January. Virginia did win one stat....they had one less turnover than ND.

Florida State 73 - Miami 69

This one was kinda crazy. Miami goes off on a 8-0 start, FSU counters with a 10-0 run and Miami
comes back with a 9-2 finish to close the first half. FSU led by 17 with five minutes left in the contest and ended up winning by four.  Imani Wright led all scorers with 20 points and was one of four Noles in double digits. FSU played just seven players. Miami's Emese Hof had a huge effort for the Canes with 21. A battle of #2 and #3 seed, just like the bracketologists predicted it in the second game tomorrow.

Softball Destroys UAB

What can be worse than getting absolutely murdered by your opponent? Having to play them again the next day. Louisville softball had a memorable night for their home opener as they routed UAB 15-0. They get to face them again today as part of a double-header. The Cards take on Maryland at 3:00 and the UAB rematch will follow.

Danielle Watson played a “full” game in the circle. She did pitch the complete game, but the mercy rule came into effect, so she only threw five innings. NCAA softball gives a mercy rule when one team leads by eight or more runs after five innings. The freshman pitcher struck out seven and gave up three hits for her ninth win this season.

On the offensive side the Cards tallied 13 hits and capitalized on six (generous number) errors by the Dragons. The UAB infield had difficulty fielding and catching the ball all night. Leading to a plethora of scoring opportunities for Louisville.

Freshman Riley Schindler came in midgame. She made quick work of her time, driving the first pitch she saw over the left field wall. She is the fifth Cardinal to send one out this season.

Celene Funke, Nicole Pufahl, and Kyra Snyder were the only players to record multiple hits on the night as Louisville managed to get solid batting out of the entire lineup. Jenna Jordan added a trio of RBI’s to her total on the season, tied for first with Caitlin Ferguson.

Coach Pearsall was aggressive on the bases tonight and was unafraid to send runners onto the next base. The newfound speed on thus year’s team was able to run all over the diamond to get runners in scoring position. Nicole Pufahl and Sidney Melton both crossed the plate three times.

A good plus on the night was only one strikeout on the offensive end. Most outs came as hard-hit ground balls or as a sac fly. The bats were hot as they have been most of the season.

The win puts the Cards at 11-4 this season as they hope to add a couple more today.

Women’s Basketball Prepares to Face Virginia Tech

The Hokies used a 29-5 fourth quarter to defeat Syracuse 85-70. Taylor Emery posted a team-best 28 points and shot over 50% from the field to help fuel the rally. Regan Magarity hauled in 13 rebounds and Virginia Tech made the most on second chance poi

The biggest contribution to the comeback was the defense. Virginia Tech shut down Syracuse, who missed their final 18 shots. The Orange’s only points in the fourth quarter were from free throws.

Virginia Tech won for just the fifth time in the ACC Tournament.

Louisville should be well-rested after receiving a double-bye. Coach Walz has been working tirelessly since the win against Pittsburgh on Sunday to make sure that his team would be prepared for any opponent they might face this weekend.

The Cards tipoff at 2:00 pm on the ACC Network. You can probably find them on Fox Sports South too.

Cardinal Couple ACC WBB Pick ‘Em

This year’s Pick ‘Em received 20 entries. The only perfect bracket remaining is the one belonging to Nick O. Four brackets have one loss and six have two losses

Here’s a few stats with the bracket

-NC State was picked by all but one bracket to win their second-round game, the most of any game

-Louisville is the winner in 13 brackets, Notre is the winner in 5, Florida State is the winner in 2

-Louisville makes it to the championship game in all but two brackets

-The Louisville-Notre Dame match-up is the most common of any championship match-ups with 12

Here’s a few stats with the actual ACC Tournament:

-#9 Virginia Tech over #8 Syracuse is the only upset when going by seeds

-85 points by Virginia Tech is the most points scored so far

-The fewest points scored so far belongs to Pittsburgh with 38

-Two teams from the state of North Carolina (North Carolina and NC State) played each other in the second round and two teams from the state of North Carolina (NC State and Duke) will face each other in the third round

-The only two teams from the state of Florida (Miami and Florida State) will face each other in the third round

-The 5-seed is the lowest to ever win the tournament

-The 1- or 2-seed has won the tournament in 17 of the least 18 years

-Notre Dame has won the last four ACC Tournaments, a win streak of 12 straight games

-Last year’s championship game attendance of 3,600 was the lowest since 1990 (2,765). The 2017 tournament was hosted in Conway, S.C., instead of Greensboro, N.C.

-Maryland has the most championships with 10, despite no longer being a member of the ACC. North Carolina (9), Duke (8), NC State (4), Notre Dame (4), Virginia Tech (3), Clemson (2) are the only other schools to win the championship.

Paulie has been enjoying his time in Greensboro so far. Whether the Cards win or lose his time will be spent there through the championship game. He will provide another update later today and we are hoping for him to have some good news following the 2:00 game! Because he is out of town he will not be in the studio at the Magnificent Media Mansion on Melwood this Saturday. It will be myself, Case, Worldwide, and a special guest so stay tuned!

Happy Friday and enjoy all the several UofL sports going on this weekend!

  1. Lucky guesses on my part but proud to be leading. Seven more games to go. Did anyone else watch the Virginia game? Beside you, Paulie? They really waste that big 6'9" girls talent. They lobbed to her early and forgot about her the rest of the way. They didn't deserve to advance!!

  2. She doesn’t put her hands up and she’s not aggressive at all. I think she’s only a sophomore so there’s plenty of time for development but the UGA coach needs to take advantage of size like that.

  3. Cards pull the victory out,Virginia Tech try to do a De Paul but the cards overcame.

  4. Cards will win this thing. FSU and ND will be exhausted after their battle tomorrow and the Cards should handle NC St. pretty easy since it's their third game in three days.

  5. I thought we did a great job vs VATech. They were Hot Hot Hot coming in having just dropped 85 on Syracuse and they stayed hot against us. Just looking at the stat line they probably should have beat us, but our kids were tough even though things didn't go our way. We won because we locked down defensively in the second half.

Only turned it over six times, had nine steals and shot almost 87% from the free throw line. That's tournament quality play. Overcame poor shooting from our guards, focused and got it done. Looking forward to today's game.
