Louisville women's basketball -- 18 -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

CARDS 18 ( AND THEY KNOW WHAT THEY WANT)

MEDIA FRENZY

Kudos to the main stream media for showing up in force and giving some good coverage to the UofL women's basketball team. After Sunday's win, the make-shift press conference staging area (underneath the east stands and moved because of burst pipes and drippy ceilings in the regular media area) was full with every local television and maybe twelve different internet and various other sports reporters represented. Hw great it is to see the WBB program getting some widespread attention.

Also, a shout out to the fans showing up for the last two home games 8101 were the numbers for the win over Duke and 7523 for the handling of the Hokies. This is roughly 2000 more than had been climbing into the YUM! Center seats earlier in the season. People are figuring out what the readers here have long known -- #YhisTeamIsSpecial. Instead of being indignant with a "What took you so long?" attitude, we, are Cardinal Couple say "Welcome to the show, sit wherever you want." The more coverage provided means more promotion to the people and a chance to know about the joy and excitement of UofL women's sports -- which is in our mission statement.

Kudos to our writers here, as well. Case wrote up the Sunday win with style and comprehension. Paulie and Jared will fill out the days before the Thursday night "shootout with the South Benders" with their wit and expertise. 18-0. One at a time.

Paulie has been having a bit of fun by celebrating the last couple of wins with musical references and when I asked him about "18" innuendos -- he produced two classics. Alice Cooper's legendary "I'm Eighteen (and I don't know what I want.) and Skid Row's opus "18 and life to go". The WBB squad certainly knows what they want -- a national title -- and "18 and life to go" is a bit dramatic...there certainly will be life after this game, no matter what the outcome...but both are interesting songs. In case you've never heard either, they're linked up below.

Any other "18" songs you can think of? Let us know in the comments section.

A dramatic interpretation of Alice Cooper's "I'm Eighteen."

SKID ROW and the 1989 release of 18 and life to go.

I'm a trivia junkie of sorts so I thought I'd have a little fun with "18" today.

-- The 18th element of the periodic table is Argon. Argon is an inert gas that welders use to prevent sparks in their work area. Here's to the WBB Cards continuing that "Argon" defense that stifles opponents' offensive sparks before they can burn us.

-- The letters of the Hebrew word "Chai" which translates out to "life" add up to 18 and it is a Jewish tradition of giving gifts of money in multiples of 18 as a sign of good wishes. Let us keep the Chai streak going (and Cardinal Couple gladly accepts donations in multiples of 18 as well).

-- In China, 18 is considered very lucky because its pronunciation, shi-ba, is very close to Shi fa, which means "to prosper". With a prosperous offense to match the Cardinals' argon defense, the Cards can't lose and let's hope we are all looking up trivia for 19.

-- William Shakespere's Sonnet 18 is one of his most famous:

"Shall I compare thee to a summer day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May
And summer's lease hath all to short a date."

The Cliff Notes version of this oracle is that Shakespeare is comparing his love to summer but that the comparison does not express the depth of his emotion and through the words of the sonnet, his beloved shall live forever. This team, this streak and this special season will live forever in our hearts.

-- A thoroughbred's name can be up to 18 characters long. I'm not comparing the UofL basketball squad to horses, mind you, but let's remember Winning Colors was a filly that won the Kentucky Derby wire to wire by a neck over hard-charging Forty Niner. Gary Stevens, who still rides today, won the first of his two Kentucky Derby's on her. She paid $18 on an across-the-board bet.

WINNING COLORS WINS THE 1988 KENTUCKY DERBY

-- 18 is the Samuel L. Jackson of numbers

-- Koala Bears sleep 18 hours a day. Nice gig if you can get it.

-- "R" is the 18th letter of the alphabet. R is the first letter in "Red" -- the color UofL is urging fans to wear Thursday   Five Cards have the letter "R" in their names (DuRR, CaRter, ZambRotta, Retta Kakala and FuehRing.)

No Cardinal WBB player has ever worn #18 since they started tracking these things back in the early 70's.

OK. Enough of the the fun and useless scenarios. This game won't be won by superstition, correlation or by "18". It'll be put into the win column by hard work, excellent execution and defense.

Thursday night. A few lower level tickets remain but they're going fast. Will we see the 200 and 300 levels opened for this one? Will Myisha Hines-Allen listen to ocean sounds as part of her pre-game "shuffle" musical mix? Will we be talking about "19" Friday morning?

All will be revealed Thursday night.

  1. And because I'm a science geek and love tangents of tangents. Many of the signs that are commonly referred to as "neon signs" use gases other than neon to make their colors. Neon glows red-orange, so when you see other colors (and sometimes when you see a reddish color, even) it is a different gas.

As a noble gas, Argon is well suited to this and glows a lavender/purplish sort of color.

    1. OK, let's play trivia of all sorts today, shall we? Did you know that the Cards haven't beaten Notre Dame since 2-11-09? The Cards won on the road 71-66. The Cards have never beaten the Irish in the KFC YUM! Center and the Irish are not currently in the top 10 attendance records for a visit to UofL. The Cards would need to pull in 15,324 Thursday night to get 10th place in the all-time Freedom Hall/KFC YUM! Center attendance numbers.

Here's a question that will get the first correct answer an entry for the next Panera Card drawing. Which of these four schools ARE NOT in the top-ten draws in UofL Women's basketball history?

      a) Syracuse
      b) Southern Miss
      c) California
      d) Rutgers

      First correct reply wins.

Yes, argon is also used in compact fluorescent bulbs (with mercury vapor) for a white glow and in incandescent bulbs to protect the filament from burning out. I just felt like I should pick one analogy ;)

    3. Wow. Gotta go with Southern Miss here.

  2. To my knowledge, 18 is not an allowable basketball number, due to the inability of a referee to announce the number 18 using hand signals.

    1. Accurate indeed, Case. Anything above "5" on either the front or back digit on a players jersey is verboten...unless the referee has six digits on his right hand.

    2. I kinda wish VBall would adopt this rule...would make it easier to figure out who the officials are calling for net violations.

    4. When you have a ex-school-teacher, IT specialist, engineer, bank official and retiree in the writing rotation, anything can (and usually does) happen. I assure you we do more women's sports coverage in one day than most sites do in a week.

Lighten up, Francis. Have some fun with the foolishness. Or, as Roy D. Mercer might ask..."How big a boy are ya?"

  3. Hey Paulie! Slightly off-topic but I miss not hearing you on Sports Shorts each morning on 100.9 FM. What's the deal?

    1. OK...so I'm thinking you mean missing hearing me, not not missing hearing me, whick would indicate you liked the format before I did Sports Shorts. Just a guess here. The show hosts Kevin and Bryce will still be on the air Fridays with the Morning Jam but I have not decided whether I will still be a part of the format or not.

Basically, the boys were "burned out" on five-days-a-week and are also seeking full-time employment that pays them.

A shame, really. A good show but things change. WCHQ is actively looking for "hosts" Mon-Thurs and I am maybe considering filling one of those spots if accepted and I can figure out the mechanics of working the main control board...but, as of now, the Saturday Morning Cardinal Couple Raio Hour is currently the only chance you have to hear these dulcet tones on the radio, along with my 5-7 minute appearance on Howie Lindsey's show Tuesday Mornings (currently around 9:45 AM).

It is what it is. Life changes.

  7. Good news is that Notre Dame's Thompson, Turner, Johnson and Vaughn are all out for the season with knee injuries and Boley transferred. Bad new is that Mabrey, Ogumbowale, Shepard, Westbeld and Young are still beating opponents while averaging almost 90 points a game in the last 7-8 contests.

Does a "run-out, shoot-out" favor the Cards since they go nine deep and ND goes 6-7 deep? Interesting facet to what should be a great contest.

Enjoy it Louisvillians. I wish I was in the 'Ville' for this one and will be watching and cheering down here in Bradenton.

This is perhaps the one game each year that I'm almost neutral on, due to my long association with Notre Dame. Go Cards, though, and win a well-played, exciting contest.

Sonya, make sure Paulie takes his sedatives a few hours before this one.

  8. I don't want a "run out, shoot out" even though those games are fun to watch.

I think Cards beat good teams with 40 minutes of solid half court defense.

  10. Reports are that 10,500 tickets have been sold for the game. Less than 48 hours to go. I am a bit surprised that UofL hasn't made some sort of discount ticket offer for the 300 or 200 Club level yet.

    1. Hasn't UPS bought tickets at a reduced cost in the past and made them available for their employees?

There are companies that have bought group tickets and providing toemployees at their $3 cost. If you have a group that wants tickets at a reduced cost contact the ticket office. Only thing available is upper level. I had to scavenge for a single lower since I was short one ticket for my friend.

Very happy to see people finally showing up for this team. Win,or loss Thursday (and I believe we will win) #ThisTeamIsSpecial

  12. A win against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish would be a good win. IMHO the cards have to match Notre Dames intensity both on Defense & Offense to win this contest.Against A #2 ranked D-1 BB team.
Go Card's beat the Irish !!!!!!

    1. I'll take Shook's four point and five grabs last night in fifteen minutes. The three turnovers were a bit dicey and Walz ripped her a new one over it after she had the back-to-back ones but she showed a new aggressiveness on Thursday night.

    2. Was not just this game night in night out she either cant handle passes or someone from the other team takes a rebound from her. She is weak with the ball as Bionca is stronger I think she should get more minutes than she is getting. Just an observation.
