Volleyball Finishes Winning Weekend for UofL Women -- MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Volleyball Completes Sweep of Georgia Tech

As we predicted might happen, Louisville volleyball surpassed last season's win total yesterday with a victory over Georgia Tech. Jeff mentioned that Georgia Tech was a bit of an enigma, and they seemed to continue their Jekyll and Hyde performance yesterday against the Cards. Louisville made short work of the Yellow Jackets in the first set, winning 25-13, but GT came up big in the second, leading the majority of the game and stretching to a 16-21 lead before Louisville went on a massive run to win 25-21. The second game win was enough to propel the Cards to a simple sweep, despite hitting their worst percentage of the day in the third set. Fortunately for the Cards 0.128 hitting percentage, GT was up to the task of being worse, hitting only 0.027 in the third. Louisville led nearly the entire set, which was close until about the 30th point, when Louisville began to stretch their lead. The Cards ultimately won 25-19.

Melanie McHenry was back to her normal self yesterday, hitting a solid .265 with 14 kills. She peppered in an ace, three blocks, and an assist to go along with 6 digs. As important as Molly Sauer is to the defense and Wilma Rivera the offense, this team chugs along with the significant play of McHenry. Sauer and Rivera were their usual rock solid selves, and Jasmine Bennett had a great day with 9 kills and 5 blocks. Louisville has played well to this point, around halfway through the season. They'll take their talents on the road for awhile, but with 12 regular season games remaining, there is still a lot of time to continue making noise.

Here's what Coach Dani Busboom Kelly had to say after the victory: Post Game with DBK

The Cards will face their first rematch test up next when they travel to Miami on Friday. Louisville served Miami their first loss of the season, and the Hurricanes would likely enjoy repaying that favor. No television listed for that one, so we'll have to keep a sharp eye on the Louisville Volleyball twitter account for the play-by-play updates. They do a great job, as do almost all of the sports accounts, so head to the right side of the site and give them a follow. If you don't do twitter, the bar on the right hand side of the page is a live feed so you can get your updates there.

The Cards are 7-1 in the ACC...good for third place in the standings. Pitt remains undefeated in conference play, as does NC State

Until next time, Go Cards!

  1. Nice job on the exciting win. Busboom-Kelly still has a bit of the deer in the headlights look in interviews but she's winning and she'll get more comfortable in front of the media.

    1. Proud to report that it was Cardinal Couple official photographer Jared Anderson doing the video and Worldwide Jeff asking a few of the questions.

Thankfully, getting Jared in to take photos (nice job on those, Jared!) WAS ACCOMPLISHED after a series of e-mails that got confusing and ended up with Paulie drawing a line in the sand and the hierarchy retreating off the battle lines. I'll have more on that tomorrow.
