Louisville softball shuts out North Carolina Central...Lacrosse falls to VA...E throws two winners -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE
CARDS TAKE DOUBLEHEADER 9-0, 5-0
On Fan Day at the Belknap Campus...the Louisville Softball squad gave the fan base plenty to cheer about with a sweep of the Eagles 9-0 and 5-0 at Ulmer Stadium. Both Maryssa Becker and Megan Hensley tossed complete game shut-outs to improve the Cardinal softball record to 29-9.
Cards 9 - North Carolina Central 0
It took Louisville only five innings to run-rule the visitors from Durham in the opener....putting three on the board in the first inning keyed by a two-RBI double from senior Brittany Sims.
The hit and pitch gals added two more in the third...piecing together three singles while getting Sidney Melton and Becker to the plate.
UofL put the final four runs of the game up in the bottom of the fourth when Jordan Vorbrink tripled and scored, Becker doubling home Morgan Meyer and scoring on Hensley's team-leading twelfth fence clearer of the season.
Becker (16-6) struck out 11 Eagles in the win and allowed just three hits in getting her fourth shutout of the season.
LOUISVILLE 5 - NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL 0
Hensley entered the circle for the nightcap and allowed just one hit in the Cardinal victory...tossing 10 strikeouts in the process.
This one was a pitcher's duel for the first four innings before the Cards erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Lillie Goetz, Hensley and Alison Szydlowski registered RBI hits and Jordan Vorbrink nailed a two RBI triple to give UofL a comfortable lead and Hensley retired the final six Eagle batters in order to secure the win.
The teams will finished the series with a Sunday noon contest...it's Bark In The Park Day at Ulmer and your cuddly canines are welcome in the outfield berm area. No run the bases with your pet is planned...but they might get some exercise chasing Cardinal homers.
LACROSSE LOSES A HEARTBREAKER TO VIRGINIA 10-9.
The Louisville Laxers overcame a 8-3 second half deficit to pull within one of the visiting Cavaliers at the LLS but couldn't overcome the ACC foe in a 10-9 Senior Day loss.
UofL jumped out to a 2-0 advantage to begin the match with scores from Kelli Gerding and Heidi Smith in the first five minutes but the Cavs rallied for four straight scores over the next twenty minutes. Senior Cortnee Daley found the back of the net with seven minutes left in the first half to close the gap to 4-3 but UVA netted the final two scores of the half to take a 6-3 lead to the tent.
The Wahoos registered the first two scores of the final half before UofL went on a 4-0 run to cut the lead to 8-7...getting two scores each from Jillian Balog and Kay Morissette.
After a Virginia score made it 9-7, Morissette scored off the draw control to get Louisville back within one. Kellie Young called a timeout when UVA took a 10-8 lead at the 6:19 mark. The strategy worked and Gerding got her second score of the game 10 seconds later to set the tally at 10-9.
Virginia went into a ball control offense for the final five minutes of the contest which was finally broken up by a Louisville steal with 19 seconds left in the match. The Cards got Madison Hoover open for a buzzer-beater attempt but UVA goalie Rachel Vander Kolk made a game-winning stop on the shot.
Cardinal goalie Brittany Read did not play in the contest and is out for the remainder of the season with an ACL tear. Louisville employed recent campus re-arrival and former Card Kelly Gielner between the pipes and she produced eight saves in her first action in three months.
The Cards (12-3) end the regular season Saturday at Syracuse.
EMMONNIE HENDERSON THROWS FOR TWO WINS IN LOUISVILLE INVITATIONAL
Cardinal shot put and discus specialist Emmonnie Henderson picked up two wind on her quest for the Olympics yesterday at the throws field and the Louisville women won the Invitational by 71 points over IU and Michigan State.
"E" threw for a season best mark of 53.04m/174-00 in the discus and tossed for another season best in the shot put with a 16.93m/55-6.50 hurl. It was her first event of the outdoor spring season and she looked to be in top form as she took the shot put event by 1.18 meters over her nearest competitor and .25 meters in the discus.
She'll get another chance to defend the home turf this upcoming weekend when the Cards host the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational at Cardinal Park on April 21-23.
