Other Spring Sports Continue with the Joy and Excitement -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE
It is the mission statement here at CARDINAL COUPLE to promote and report on the joy and excitement of UofL women's sports. The University of Louisville women's basketball team gave us many joyous and exciting moments over the past five months and we're absolutely looking forward to the great things that they'll provide in the future.
There are many other wonderfully joyous and exciting things going on this spring with many other UofL women's sports squads...we've been maybe a bit remiss in keeping up with them lately, while tracking women's hoops...so, let's get caught up on a few of them.
LACROSSE STILL IN THE TOP 6
Kellie Young's ACC "Lou"Crosse squad is more than halfway through the regular season (believe it or not) and is still rolling strong with a 9-1 record and ranked #6 in the nation.
Currently, they're in the middle of their "C" tour in non-conference play. They downed Canisius 15-7 and Coastal Carolina 16-2 last week and will travel to Cincinnati today for a 1 p.m. match against the Bearcats. The game can be viewed free at gobercats.com
The Cards sit 2-1 and tied for first in the ACC and will welcome conference foe Virginia Tech to town Saturday for a 1 p.m. match.
If you miss the fast paced action of women's basketball, give lacrosse a try. They fast break, run offensive patterns, steal, play tough defense and have three of the nation's best players in Kaylin Morissette, Cortnee Daley and Hannah Koloski.
SOFTBALL SLUGGING OUT SOME SERIOUS WINS
Out at Ulmer Stadium and on the road, the Louisville Softball team under Sandy Pearsall is almost at a 20-win season and has a 5-1 ACC record...good for second place in the conference. The 19-6 Cards recently swept a three-game series in Charlottesville against the Virginia Cavaliers and will host ACC for UNC in a three-game series this Friday and Saturday.
Maryssa Becker and Megan Hensley are double threats for the Hit and Pitch Cards...in those two categories. Becker (9-4) bats .420 and Hensley (10-2) is third on the squad with a .377 average.
Pearsall is getting it done with a combination of veterans and freshmen and Becker is coming off ACC Pitcher of The Week honors. The Cards currenty have eight players batting over .300 and have hit 18 home runs.
Like Lacrosse, Softball is a free event and the excitement is always present in Ulmer. Whether it's in the ballpark or out on the outfield berm...good times abound with the home runs, foul balls on the Koetter Center and peanut tosses to the crowd.
WORRELL MAKING WAVES FOR LOUISVILLE SWIMMING
Don't blink...Kelsi Worrell may splash past you en route to setting another NCAA record.
She's the All-American winner in the 100 and 200 butterfly events and has set American records in both events.
She's virtually assured of being in Rio for the 2016 Olympics and was a part of a strong squad that finished eighth in the NCAA Championships.
Arthur Albiero has built a strong program that contends for the ACC and NCAA title every year and the Cards have a strong and promising undergraduate class to carry on the tradition after Worrell's graduation.

CARDINAL COUPLE PICK 'EM RESULTS
After 48 contests in the NCAA Tournament, we have a Sweet Sixteen roster and a close contest in our annual Pick 'Em Contest.
The Deb Factor leads the way with a exlempary 40-8 record but has only 11 of the 16 Sweet Sixteen participants. Four contestants wait in the wings at 38-10 and four more lurk at 37-11.
Losses by Louisville, Maryland and Texas A&M were brutal to many of our contestants...15 games remain.
The Sweet Sixteen is Connecticut, Mississippi St., UCLA, Texas, Baylor, Florida State, DePaul, Oregon State, South Carolina, Syracuse, Ohio St., Tennessee, Notre Dame, Stanford, Kentucky and Washington.
The ACC still has three viable candidates, the SEC produced four survivors, the PAC 12 adds four, the Big 12 hanging tough with two, the AAC advances one...as does the Big East and the Big 10.

Wow, and I thought my 35-13 was pretty fly. Good luck to The Deb Factor and, hey Paulie, how you doing?
ReplyDeleteBlue Lou
Paulie I think I am one of those 38-10 contestants. Can you confirm? GO BIG BLUE!
ReplyDeleteMatthew Mitchell For Governor
Yes you are, along with Vivian, Jenny O, and Kenny S. I stand at 37-11 with 12 teams still dancing out of the 16. Unlikely to win, but stranger things have happened.
DeleteI wonder how many contestants have Kentucky getting to the elite 8? My heart wants Kelsey Plum and Washington but if Epps is healthy I think Kentucky takes it. She'll match up well on Plum.
ReplyDeleteWashington is depleted vs Kentucky . I thought this snippet from an article I just read was very interesting about cohesiveness for a team not having to sub all the time:
ReplyDeleteSo that leaves Washington with four different players who average 30 minutes or more a game. But the Huskies argue it’s made them a more cohesive group. “We play really well together and we have a great chemistry,” said leading scorer Plum, who averages 38.1 minutes a game, fifth most in the country. “It’s not nothing new for us. … We’re playing on adrenaline. We have a lot of fun with it. I figured honestly it keeps the game flowing and it allows for things to kind of work together in the game.”
