Louisville Women's Soccer shuts out SEMO 2-0 --- Tuesday Cardinal Couple

CARDS OUT-SHOOT RED HAWKS 16-4 

Shelby Cohen and Alison Price scored their first goals of the season and the Louisville defense limited Southeastern Missouri State to just two shots on goal in a 2-0 win Monday night in The Palace before a crowd of around 1500. 

The Cards found the net early in this one when Cohen lofted a 30 foot kick over the out-stretched arms of SEMO goalie Kindra Lierz with 7:11 played in the first half. The lead held through the first half...Louisville controlling the majority of the action in Red Hawks territory and firing seven shots compared to SEMO's two. 

Paige Brown, the Cards starting goalie, is from Jackson, MO. which is next to the SEMO campus and she and the Cards defense continued to turn away Red Hawks scoring chances in the final 45 minutes. With 11 minutes remaining, the Cards added an insurance goal when Rachel Avant sent a nice cross to Alison Price who booted the ball past Lierz for the final tally of the game.

Despite the win, which improved Louisville's record to 2-2-1, Coach Karen Ferguson Dayes wasn't extremely happy with the Cards overall performance...citing missed opportunities and slow play from her Kickin' Cards.

A troubling moment when red-shirt senior Casey Whitfield left the game in the second half...appearing to favor the Achilles heel that kept her on the sidelines last season. She did not return to action and was walking gingerly on it 
after the contest.

Price led the Cards with six of the sixteen shots Louisville attempted. She was one of seven Cards who played at least 85 minutes in the contest that started at a muggy 91 degrees in Louisville.
Ferguson-Dayes used just five subs in the match. Brown recorded her first shutout of the season with two saves.

PAULIE ANALYSIS: 

A win is a win and as Jeff Walz is fond of saying...they equal job security. The Cards have outscored their opponents 7-6 on the season and their only two losses have come against top 25 opponents Washington and Kentucky and by one point each....so, it's a little early to cast too many aspersions against this young group of kickers.

A piviotal point of the season is approaching, though...with the first extended road trip of the season and we'll see how the team holds up in the role of being the visitors three times in a row.  

The Cards are now 2-2-1 on the season and go on an extended road trip next...with games at UAB this Friday, Ole Miss on Sunday and Boston College next Sunday before returning home to face Miami on Sept. 24th.
