Louisville Field Hockey defeats Liberty...Soccer falls to Ole Miss on the road -- Monday Cardinal Couple
KATHERINE GWYNNE-WOOD GETS THE SCORES IN 2-1 DEFEAT OF LIBERTY
A veteran of interviews on the CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO HOUR, senior Katherine Gwynne-Wood picked up her first and second scores of the season....leading Louisville to a 2-1 win over #17 Liberty at Trager Stadium Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately, we weren't at the contest to get her reactions to the scores.
A Ipswich, England native..."Woody" connected in the 10th minute of action on the Cards second penalty corner of the day...taking a pass from Chile Garcia and driving it past the Flames goalkeeper Mallory Cuccio to give UofL a 1-0 lead.
#11 ranked Louisville held that lead through the half and most of the second half before Liberty tied it with 15 minutes to go.
Three minutes later, Woody found success again...again on a penalty corner...taking a shot that bounced off Cuccio's pads and tapping it past her to put the Cards up to stay.
Coach Sowry was prepared for the battle:
"We knew it was going to be a tough game. Liberty is an amazing opponent and they're just getting better each year. We knew that after our Virginia game that this was going to be a mental battle for us and we were going to have to bring our best...not only physically but mentally."
Louisville (5-1) takes to the road for their next two...both in Chapel Hill, NC...where they'll face #2 ranked UNC on Friday and James Madison Sunday.

SOCCER DROPS HEARTBREAKER IN OXFORD
Louisville battled Ole Miss to the wire in a 2-1 loss Sunday in Oxford, MS. to go to 3-3-1 on the season.
The Rebs tallied first in the contest at the 34 minute mark and the Cards nearly countered a minute later but Alison Price's shot was deflected at the last moment by Ole Miss goalie Marnie Merritt. The 1-0 score took the squads to halftime.
Louisville found the tie-maker in the 64th minute on a corner kick when Victoria Martinis sent a drive into the box that Casey Whitfield capitalized on to tie the score.
The Cards continued to fire away at the Rebels but it was Ole Miss who got the eventual game-winner with seven minutes left to play. Louisville nearly tied it with 15 seconds remaining on a Martinis shot but Merritt made the deflection to preserve the Ole Miss win.
Both teams had seven shots on goals and Paige Brown had five saves for the Cards...who will open ACC play at Boston College next Sunday.
