Catching up with....the WNBA -- Saturday Cardinal Couple

SURPRISES AT THE TOP

( OUR APOLOGIES TO THOSE WHO TUNED IN TO LISTEN ON WCHQ 100.9 FM IN THE LOUISVILLE AREA. RECENT STORMS HAVE KNOCKED THE FM TRANSMITTER OFF THE AIR. WCHQ IS EXPECTED TO BE BACK ON THE AIR AS EARLY AS MONDAY.

OUR SHOW WILL BE AVAILABLE ON THE SOUNDCLOUD TOMORROW IN CASE YOU MISSED IT. WE WERE ONLINE THIS MORNING AND THE STATION IS ON-LINE AS WELL...)

The WNBA is off and running and there are a few early surprises atop the conferences as the teams are roughly 1/5th of the way through their regular season schedules...in some cases.

How about the Connecticut Sun? Atop the Eastern Conference with a 5-1 record...they have won all three road games they've played. They're getting it done with a few familiar names -- Kelsey Bone is shooting 61% percent for the team and Chelsea Gray 62% from three-point range.
Alex Bentley leads the league in steals (3.3) a game.

They took down Phoenix last night in double-overtime 90-78...getting 27 points and 14 rebounds from Bone.

Over in the Western Conference, perennial doormat Tulsa is raising eyebrows with a 5-1 start as well. They're tied with the Minnesota Lynx atop the West and are currently on a five-game winning streak. Plenette Pearson is tossing in 16.3 ppg for the shock and Courtney Paris leads the league in rebounds with an impressive 12.7 a game.

They knocked out the Washington Mystics 84-81 last time out with Plenette Pierson getting 24 and Riquna Williams adding 22.

Bonus points are available if you can name where Plenette and Riquna played their college ball. (Answer at the bottom of today's column).

The two teams that draw local interest around here...the Indiana Fever and Atlanta Dream have matching 3-4 records in the Eastern Conference. They are tied for 4th. place.

Which two logos are no longer in the league?)
Angel McCoughtry is up to her usual scoring ability...with 19.4 ppg. That's third best in the league...Elena Della Donne has been on fire for Chicago (2-3) with 29.6 ppg.

Plenty of games remaining...but the league looks to have a great deal of balance (at least in the East) and a few surprises so far. In the West, LA and San Antonio are are combined 0-8.

RADIO TODAY

Our weekly radio show on WCHQ 100.9 and at www.crescenthillradio.com will have the full contingent of Paulie, Worldwide and Sam today. The fellas are going to have to carry me through this one...just recently back from vacation and trying to catch up on all things Cardinal since my return late last night.

I do have a quiz prepared for my co-hosts and it centers around "Proud Papa's" in deference to Father's Day tomorrow. Plus the usual assortment of nonsense, rants, theories and dead air that live radio brings.

See you at 11 a.m. on the radio! Link below:

  1. Just a head's up. I believe WCHQ's FM sugnal is down at the moment due to Tiime Warner Cable issues. The Internet stream us still up and working great, but if you're in the Crescent Hill area, FM isn't an option today.

    1. An update from this morning. The station manager of WCHQ, Kathy (who we call Monk, on the radio show) has an appointment for TWC to come work on the service at the transmitter for Monday. Hopefully, that will restore the FM signal.

In the meantime, WCHQ is still available via streaming at http://www.crescenthillradio.com. Our radio show from this morning, will be uploaded to Soundcloud as normal as well, in case you usually turn into the FM signal and thus missed the show today.

  2. I might want to point out that Connecticut beat Phoenix who are missing both diana diana Taurasi and Brittney Yevette Griner.

  3. Alex Harden (Wichita St) was a nice pick up in the 2nd round for Phoenix. I predicted she would make the team which she did and now predicting she will contribute big by the end of the year for the Mercury.
Betnijah Laney (Rutgers C) is another great 2nd round pick already paying huge dividends for Chicago. She and Harden will have nice careers. I like Ally Malott and Andrea Hoover (both Dayton) made the cut in WNBA and will also do well. Malott was a first rounder and Hoover third round by LA Sparks.
My favorite pick is Chelsea Gray from last years draft (first round 11th pick). Shoni was taken 3 picks before her at 8. Gray is going to have an awesome career if she stays healthy.

  4. Atlanta Dream have no guards. Tiffany Hayes is good but she is off to a slow start and out 5 games. Other than that forget it. They traded Alex Bentley and Jasmine Thomas who are both starting for the Connecticut Sun now. Thomas I thought was awful but she is playing better for the Sun.

  5. North Carolina has lost all 4 of their recruits from the #1 rated recruiting class of 2013-14. DeSheilds, Gray, Washington and Mavunga. Wouldn't be nice to pick up Mavunga? South Carolina is becoming the #1 destination for top transfers. They picked up Davis from Ga Tech and Gray from UNC. This will be the norm now in Womans bball. More and more transfers due to social media and rules being relaxed.
