Softball, Lacrosse get wins -- Thursday Cardinal Couple

BECKER DELIVERS IN CIRCLE, AT BAT IN 6-1 WIN OVER IU.

When Maryssa Becker finally got a chance to bat instead of being walked, she made the most of it Wednesday afternoon in the Cards five run win over the Hoosiers. Her 2 RBI double in the fifth inning gave the Cards a comfortable 5-1 lead over visiting IU.

The blast to right-center scored Kelsi Jones and Whitney Arion and Becker made sure the margin got no smaller...delivering five innings of no-run, four hit relief in the circle which improved her record to 8-2 on the season.

Louisville took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first but the Hoosiers tied it up in the top of the second. Louisville head coach Sandy Pearsall went to Becker in the circle after starter Shelby McCombs had allowed three hits in the first two innings. The Oregon native took control.

The Cards took the lead for good when Kayla Soles singled in the fourth and scored on a IU throwing error that allowed Nicole Pufahl to reach third. Pufahl made the circuit when Brittany Sims singled her home. 3-1 Louisville after four.

Up next, the Cards face Syracuse for two this weekend at Ulmer in games that were originally scheduled to be played at the Orange softball field but were moved to Louisville over weather concerns.

In attendance were UofL WBB players Megan Deines and Sydney Brackemyer "supporting their compatriots" according to a tweet from Syd the Kid.
That's ten bonus points for Syd with the use of 'compatriots' in a game attendance tweet.

Be sure to listen to Saturday's Cardinal Couple Radio show on WCHQ 100.9 for our delightful post game chats with Coach P. and Maryssa after today's game. Air time is 11 am

We'll try to use "compatriots" at least twice in the broadcast...

CARDS MAKE SHORT WORK OUT OF LONGWOOD IN 15-4 LACROSSE WIN

Louisville Lacrosse wasted no time in establishing dominance over homestanding Longwood University yesterday afternoon...scoring four goals in the first three minutes of the match. Kaylin Morissette found net 86 seconds into the contest and was quickly followed by goals from Cortnee Daley, Hannah Kolowski and Carissa Corbett.

The Cards held a 7-0 advantage until Longwood scored on a free position goal with 2:24 to go in the first half...Louisville taking that six goal lead into halftime.

Louisville scored first in the final half on another Morissette shot and increased the lead as the game progressed. Kowloski notched her fourth goal to close out the scoring with 6:15 left in the match. Faye Brust also had four goals for Louisville...who improves to 8-2 on the season.

Morissette set a single game UofL record with eighteen draw controls (out of a possible twenty one). To describe that to the non-Lacrosse informed...it's the equivalent of controlling 18 jump balls in a basketball game.

The Cards will have a long time to celebrate this one. The scheduled team charter flight back to Louisville was a "no-go"...so the team will bus back to Louisville via US 60 and I-64. That's 520 miles and about nine hours...plus a stop or two to dine and stretch the legs. Happy motoring, girls!

WE LIKE THESE ODDS...

The internet search engine BING has proclaimed that the Louisville WBB women's basketball team has a 88% chance of winning their Saturday Sweet Sixteen game against Dayton. We approve.

Radio "bad boy" Jared Stillman, who made a cameo appearance in the press box for yesterday's softball game has proclaimed the girls will win by 20 points. The always-loquacious and definitely opinionated personality on 93.9 FM also proposes that if the Cards defeat UConn to get to the Final Four, Jeff Walz should immediately be enshrined in the College Basketball Hall-of-Fame.

You just keep talking, Jared. It's what your good at. Predictions and proposals? Maybe not your strong suit...

  1. As I posted last night "for recreational purposes only"....Cardinals are favored by 5 points.

That is the smallest point spread of all eight games. Other favorites range from UConn (28 1/2) to Florida State (6 1/2).

Five point spread probably doesn't translate to an 88% win probability.

    1. I would have to agree, Mike. I am sure that very few outside the Dayton area envisioned that the Flyers would toss UK aside. Not sure what the "Bing" probability was on that...but I would expect it was equally high in UK's favor.

One thing for sure, the Flyers aren't going to fold camp and say..."Oh, this is Louisville, we guess we are going home after today's game." They are a Cinderella...but talented and the Cards need to steal that silver slipper early and prevent it from being worn.

    1. Jared's shtick
(a gimmick, comic routine, style of performance, etc., associated with a particular person.)
seems to work quite well for him and draws response. Response is big in the broadcasting industry. If people aren't commenting about you, it usually means they aren't listening and listening translates into ratings.

I've know Jared since his early days as a student at UofL (anyone remember J-Bone at BB games with the roving microphone in the stands?...that was him.) I can tell you he is an avid follower of sports in general and has a very in-depth knowledge of the UofL sports programs.

Obnoxious? I'll say no. Thought provoking? Yup.

    3. So Jared Stillman is today's topic? I'll admit I have never heard him with me being down here in Naples and all. I will say that individuality in broadcast sports talk is definitely been around a long time. The great Vin Scully calls of baseball. Dizzy Dean and Pee Wee Reese. Cawood Ledford and his UK calls. Louisville's own Paul Rogers and Bob Valvano.

Controversy is also a big item. Tony Kornheiser and Micheal Wilborn. Stephen Smith. Paul Finebaum.

You basically listen to what you want to though, in the final analysis. If it doesn't please you, turn the knob or punch the preset. Of course, the best sports talk radio is broadcast every Saturday morning when Paulie, Worldwide and Sam the Intern take to the Crescent Hill/WCHQ airwaves.

That is radio worth listening to.

    4. Jared the Airhead is horrible. Worst sports announcer ever.

    5. I find Jared entertaining and not afraid to speak his mind. Beats monotone Demling in a rout. Cutesy pie Deener, he could use some work. Who cares if he is in a Holiday Inn lobby? Maybe he could bellhop some luggage.

    6. Who cares? Deener and Jared don't discuss women's sports and neither does Demling.

  3. Let's talk about UofL sports instead of broadcasters. Although I have never heard of Jared Stillman or listened to Paulie's show, I'm sure each has it's high points. The question I have is this. Does Texas have a shot at knocking off UConn?

    1. Easy. None whatsoever!

    2. Gotta agree with K. The probability of a UConn win over Hook 'em Horns is 100% (unless the UT men's team takes the court against Geno's bunch...then we would have to make it a "pick 'em" .)

    3. Don't forget that Texas barely survived WKU and then held on late to down Cal in Berkley. They haven't exactly been slaughtering opponents. Texas is tall. They don't shoot the three very well at all and their defense is suspect.

  4. Anything is possible. How many saw Baylor advancing over UofL a couple years back? In order to beat UConn, Texas must do five things, in my opinion:

    1) Control the boards. UConn has to be stopped getting second chance opportunities and Texas can't afford one shot possessions (unless they score).
    2) Shut down Stewart. The others may get theirs, but if you shut down the leader, you improve your chances. That is much easier said than done.
    3) Stay in the game early. UConn blows out so many opponents by the half. Texas will need to stay within striking distance.
    4) Prevent the UConn transition game. The Huskies get a lot of points that way. If you can make then have to work the half court set consistantly, you improve your chances of beating them.
    5) Get a few Huskies in foul trouble. Making Geno go into his bench helps an opponents chance to pull off the upset.

Texas' chance of beating UConn? Difficult but not impossible. I would equate it with teaching a horse how to drive a Honda.

  5. Texas won't beat UConn but maybe they can wear them down enough so UofL can.

  6. Words from Rick Pitino that UofL WBB can take to heart and theory:

Delivering this memorable quote during his Tuesday press conference: “The only thing I conveyed to them was there’s a past, a present and a future. The past is what you were, the present is where you are now, and the future is where you’re going to be. And the tournament makes the future for all of us.”

  7. Walz should eventually be in the Women's basketball Hall Of Fame but I think it is too early to put him in there. If you look at the coaches in the ACC that are in there, and those would be Sylvia Hatchell and Muffet McGraw, I don't think Walz's body of work equals theirs just yet. Give him time, though.

    1. After UConn lost to Stanford, Stanford lost its next game to Texas. Stanford caught UConn over confident and unprepared for Stanford's new offense. The Stanford guards outplayed the UConn guards, and the Stanford wings hit 50% on their threes while UConn hit 37% on their 3s and 41% on all shots. Standford hit 51% of their shots, and out rebounded the taller Huskies 41-37.

It seems a little illogical that people on this discussion list are so sure Texas is going to lose and Louisville is going to win considering Texas beat the only team to beat UConn, and Dayton beat Kentucky on Kentucky's home floor while Louisville lost to Kentucky on its home floor.

  8. Texas will be just another dead armadillo on the side of the road that ran into the Geno dump truck. I also see UConn by 30. How Stanford beat them, I'll never know.

  9. Maryssa Becker seems to be the real deal for the Cards pitching and hitting. How did Pearsall get her out of Oregon?

  11. SEC hasn't had a team in the final four since 2008. UConn and Notre Dame are pretty much fixtures so that only leaves 2 slots open each year for everyone else.

  12. Just read a real good article on South Florida's team and it was fun to see how other programs respect ours.
"Louisville is the No. 3 seed for a reason. The Cardinals are used to making Sweet 16s. They pounded the paint. They badly outrebounded USF. The Bulls turned the ball over too many times, crucial times, and missed important shots. They scored 20 points below their season average. They didn’t have enough."
