LACROSSE STUNNED BY B.C IN OVERTIME...SELECTION SHOW HEADED TO CARDINAL ARENA -- Thursday Cardinal Couple

OVERTIME GOAL WITH SIX SECONDS REMAINING DOWNS LAX CARDS 16-15

There was no thrill on Chestnut Hill for the Louisville Lacrosse squad at the end of the Wednesday afternoon match against Boston College.

The Cards never trailed until six seconds remained in overtime...Covie Stanwick scoring her sixth goal of the game to defeat the Cards in their first ever ACC league contest.

If there is any consternation about Louisville's addition to the league, however...the Cards showed without a doubt that they will be a positive bonus instead of a detriment to the strongest conference in college LAX.

Louisville had this one until the end. They had B.C. on the ropes early and late but couldn't seal the deal. It was an epic battle that rings true to the old adage "play until the final buzzer." In Louisville's case, that buzzer needed to occur seven seconds before it actually did.

The Cards burst out to a 4-0 lead, extended that to 6-1 after Kaylin Morissette's second and third goals and led 8-4 with eight minutes to go in the first half. Boston College showed why they are the #3 team in the nation, though...scoring twice to cut the Cardinal lead to 8-6 at the intermission.

Louisville started the second half out strong and Morissette's fourth goal gave the Cards a 10-6 edge. That disappeared after four straight BC scores...but Louisville answered with a 3-0 run to take a three point edge.

BC cut the margin to two at 13-12 and then defense took over for a 11 minute stretch. Cortnee Daley fed Faye Brust to make it 14-12 Cards...but the Eagles managed two goals in the final 1:28 to force the overtime.

A tough loss for Louisville (5-1, 0-1) but a lesson learned, hopefully...in late game clock and defense management. A strong ACC debut for the LOULAX girls that sends a message to their new conference foes that last year's BIG EAST title and undefeated slate was no fluke and that Louisville will be a tough team to beat for the future ACC opponents.

Another conference member is next...the Cards return home to face #4 Duke at the Louisville Lacrosse Stadium for a noon draw control.

Softball was scheduled for a 6 p.m. contest against Miami, OH last night...but flooding and soggy conditions in Ohio caused the game to get cancelled. The teams will make it up in a doubleheader when the RedHawks come to visit Ulmer Stadium later this spring.

Softball hosts Virginia this weekend...the first pitch at noon Saturday. It's a shame they couldn't have moved either this time or the LAX start so fans could catch both.

Louisville WBB will host this year's Women's Selection Monday bracket-watch party at Cardinal Arena on March 16th. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the ESPN coverage of the brackets begins at 7 p.m. Players will be available for autographs until 6:45 p.m. (one item only, please)...and Walz and Matt Andrews will discuss the seedings during commercial breaks. Free admission.

Following the show the kids will be allowed to run the bases..oops! Sorry, wrong sport....although Matt will be transitioning to baseball coverage for the Bats before you know it...

Let's hope the WBB Cards make a long tourney run and make him miss a few early season Bats contests...

This event has been in several locations over the years...from venues like the Parrish House to the KFC YUM! Center. The last time Cardinal Arena hosted, Louisville made their first run to the Final Four in 2009...disappointed that they had to start in Baton Rouge, LA in LSU's back yard instead of nearby Bowling Green.

We can hope for deja vu and good karma to be associated with going back this year to watch the show in the Cards' on-campus practice facility.

Speculation that the Cards are anywhere from a "2" seed to a "4" seed will be revealed Monday night. Let's hope the placement is cause to celebrate on Tuesday's St. Patrick's Day.

  1. Steve Jones is reporting on C-J website that Walz has a commitment from junior Colorado post player Kylee Shook, rated #35 nationally. She was one of the three top post players (along with Lauren Cox and Tori McCoy) who visited on February 16.

  2. Great pick up ... (Kylee Shook) for coach Walz, finally getting the size we've been needing to bring home a title L1C4.

    1. She averaged 18.3 points, 14.9 rebounds and 8.1 blocks. On Feb. 19 she posted a rare quadruple-double, scoring 24 points, grabbing 22 rebounds, dishing 11 assists and making 12 blocks.

  3. Here's the link. Pretty funny tho..."The Cards will find out IF they made the NCAA tourney on Monday". I'm sure if Shook ends up signing her LOI and coming on down the Colorado folks will get more familiar with the women's NCAA tourney and how it works.
