Softball finds the bats...Hoops today! -- Sunday Cardinal Couple

CARDS SOFTBALL SCORES 27 RUNS SAT.

Maybe it was because it was Valentine's Day and the Cardinal hitters were feeling the love. Maybe it was because they were tired of going 1-1 on days where they played two. Whatever the reason...Louisville's offense launched from the rocket pad Saturday in Orlando and defeated Arkansas 11-5 and Florida A&M 16-1.

Louisville 11 - Arkansas 5

Arkansas was the first opponent to see Louisville run around the bases and the Cards dumped nine runs on the Hogs in the bottom of the first inning. Four doubles and two batters with two hits in the inning. 

The Cards added two runs in the third to lead 11-2 and coasted in from there. Madi Norman picked up the win (2-3) with four innings in the circle and Maryssa Becker closed it out for the Cards. Kelsi Jones went 3 for 4, Jordan McNary 2 for 2 and Becker 2 for 4 at the plate.

Louisville 16 - FAMU 1

The Cards kept the hot bats going in their second game...tapping Rattler pitching for four first inning runs. Any doubts of this one being close evaporated in the third when UofL added 11 runs on 11 hits. No home runs...but a two-run triple from Nicole Pufahl and two-run double by Jones contributed to the scoring frenzy. It was 15-0 after three.

Louisville added the final run in the fourth. Maryssa Becker got her first decision of the season in the five-inning affair...allowing just three FAMU hits, one run and striking out seven. 

29 hits for Louisville in the two games. Coach Pearsall has had concerns about the Cards lack of offensive production and stranding runners on the bags...she had a worry-free day yesterday in that regard. 

The Cards (5-4) conclude their trip to Orlando today with a 9 a.m. game against the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders.

#17 UNC VISITS FOR PLAY4KAY DAY

The University of Louisville women's basketball team will

try and stay one game behind Notre Dame in the ACC loss column when they host the North Carolina WBB squad for a 1 p.m game in the KFC YUM! Center. 

UNC (20-5, 7-4) comes off a Thursday night home win over Florida State 71-63. The TarHeels held Seminole shooters to just 32.9% shooting and created 23 turnovers. 

Diamond DeShields is gone from Sylvia Hatchell's locker room but Allisha Gray (16.3 ppg), Stephanie Mavunga (14.0), Brittany Roundtree and Latifah Coleman are pacing the way for UNC...who reached the Elite Eight last season and was picked to finish fourth in the ACC in the pre-season coaches poll. 

Walz will look to get Louisville's first win ever over the Rams by riding the hot shooting of Sara Hammond and Shawnta' Dyer. Mariya Moore leads Louisville in scoring with 13.5 a game.

The TarHeels will mostly likely pack it back in a zone and dare Louisville to beat them from mid-range and deeper. UofL will need to counter by going strong to the boards on both ends of the court, getting into the transition game and keeping this one from becoming a half-court contest. 

The Cards are first in the ACC in least points allowed and that factor...along with avoiding a slow start and hitting the 10-15 foot shot will play a big role if Louisville is to get win number 22 on the season.

This one is a ESPN2 game...Pammie Ward and LaChina Robinson will be at center court calling the action. Paulie and Sonja will be in the end zone...trapped in the sensory overload of the Pep Band and the Louisville cheerleaders.

LACROSSE HOME OPENER TODAY

Louisville Lacrosse gets the season started today with a  2 p.m. match against the Cincinnati Bearcats on the frozen tundra of the UofL Lacrosse Stadium. 

The Bearcats faced #9 Notre Dame Friday and suffered a 14-5 loss to start their season. Louisville romped UC 23-2 last year and returns superstars Kaylin Morissette, Faye Brust, Cortnee Daley and several other starters from a 14-6 and 7-0 BIG EAST season that saw the Cards advance to the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament. 

This one promises to be a chilly affair for Kellie Young's net-wielders...game time temperature is expected to be in the low 20's with a 10-15 MPH NNE wind. 

We flipped a coin on it yesterday. Jeff won...and I'm supposed to go watch. I'm sending Timmy The Intern instead.

This was a fun hour in the studios yesterday...Worldwide Jeff and I discussed Cardinal women's hoops, softball, lacrosse and Jeff aced the Worldwide Quiz about "Things We Love About UofL Women's Sports". 

Wouldn't it be fun to bring the Pep Band into the
studio one Saturday morning?
