Saturday Cardinal Couple -- For WBB, safety in numbers, plenty of options

SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

- WBB returns plenty, adds more

- Worldwide on the mend

- Radio Today!

- Congrats to baseball

A glance at the probable UofL basketball roster for 2014-15 recently revealed that Jeff Walz has at least 15 student-athletes at his disposal for the season. If the possibility of a transfer develops in Leticia Romero occurs and Diamond Marshall returns to sit on the bench...bump that to 17.

Here's the breakdown:

Returnees:

Sara Hammond, Monny Niamke, Sherrone Vails, Starr Breedlove, Shawnta Dyer, Cortnee Walton, Megan Deines, Bria Smith, Jude Schimmel, Emmonnie Henderson.

Incoming Freshmen:

Sydney Brackemyer, Arica Carter, Ariana Freeman, Myshia Hines-Allen, Mariya Moore.

It's a list that impresses greatly upon observation. The real question is this....how do you manage playing time for 15 players that all have had, or have the potential to have game-changing performance each night they step on the court?

Louisville will miss the graduates. Shoni, Asia, Tia and Nita. Two are in the WNBA. It may be the most significant loss in talent since Angel and Candyce left after the Cards went to St. Louis for the Final Four.

- 44.2 of the 79 points per game Louisville averaged last year are gone.

- 552 of the total 1541 rebounds.

- 204 of the 237 total three-pointers made.

It's probably way too early to predict or indicate a starting lineup out of the 15. I do think Sara Hammond and Bria Smith will hang on to their starting roles from last year. After that, it gets debatable. Shawnta, Sherrone and Jude all got starts last year. Megan was a regular starter two years ago. Monny was a starter at Lindsey Wilson. Any of the five freshmen could get the nod based on their high schools stats.

Jeff Walz will tell you that it's more important to determine the five you want out there finishing a game than starting one. Time will tell on who earns that ending role.

Your thoughts?

Can u pick Worldwide out of this lineup?

Our columnist and co-radio host Worldwide Jeff McAdams is back home after undergoing successful gall bladder removal surgery. He'll miss today's radio show and I'll miss him in the studio but we expect he'll be back soon.

And, he had a grape slushy waiting for him in post-op.

As he put it...

Best. Nurses. Ever.

Continue to mend, pal and we'll leave the "seat against the wall" in the studio vacant until you return. Maybe I'll even take it easy on him on his first quiz after he returns. I'm pretty sure his horrible performance last week on a seeming
easy quiz on Cardinal coaches was due to his malady.

At least that's the answer we're going with.

I tried to get Poobah to come on the show and play the
piano but we couldn't get it down the stairs

CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO on Crescent Hill Radio airs today at 11 a.m. As mentioned, it'll just be Paulie spreading the gospel, gossip and glitz.

I'll be doing a recap of a few of the memorable moments of the 2013-14 Louisville WBB season, I do have a "rant" planned and Don Paulie is confused. Again.

It's radio without boundaries, direction, accountability and leadership.

Pretty cool, eh?

Listen in at the link below. I'll also give my Belmont selection...which will provide you clear and indisputable evidence on who not to wager on.

RADIO, SHAMADIO....WHEN'S THE PIZZA ARRIVING?

We'd also like to extend our congratulations to the Louisville baseball team for their come-from-behind 5-3 win last night over Kennesaw State in the NCAA Baseball Super Regionals.

A fun game to watch...Louisville got a 1-0 lead early, saw it vanquish and put together three runs in the eighth inning to regain the advantage.

Two observations...

- Nick Burdi throws one mean fastball.

- Kennesaw State players really need to shave.

One more win over the Owls needed and off to Omaha and the College World Series!  Should be a piece of cake. Cardinals dominate Owls.

  1. Don't forget the success of Sara Hammond and her 3 on 3 team mates as they compete in that competition.

  2. Today they won their quarterfinals and will play Belgium in semi-finals tomorrow.

They are the only undefeated team. Spain has one loss and that was to the USA.
Both semi-final games and final which i presume will be against Spain are being beoadcast by streaming video using youtube so games can be watched live or later.
