Sunday Cardinal Couple -- Govs impeached by Cards 108-53

SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

- Shoni with 24 in Louisville rout of APSU

Shoni Schimmel led all scorers with 24 points and the UofL women's basketball team placed five players in double figures Saturday night in a 108-53 clobbering of Austin Peay in the KFC YUM! Center before about 8,000 fans.

It was a slow starting Cardinal attack...Louisville actually trailing 7-6 when Kristin Stainback hit a jumper for the Govs two and a half minutes into the contest. Stainback would net eight of the first ten points for APSU and finish with 14 on the evening.

That soon changed...the Cards going on a 21-6 run over the next six minutes to hold a convincing 28-12 edge after Cortnee Walton scored in the paint after a nice feed from freshman Emmonnie Henderson.

An Asia Taylor layup with three minutes left in the half pushed Louisville out to a 50-26 advantage and the Cards took a 56-34 lead into the locker room at the half.

The second half was more of the same.

The Cards provided a 15-5 run to begin the final 20 minutes after Cortnee Walton hit a free throw. The Surprise, AZ sophomore would finish with 13 points and seven rebounds.

Tia Gibbs three created a 84-43 margin for Louisville with 8:43 left...the sixth year senior played only seven minutes but was 3-3 from the field and 2-2 from the charity stripe.

With the win, the Cards improve to 10-1 on the year. Austin Peay drops to 3-6.

Louisville shot 51.8% from the floor and the Cards had a season low eight turnovers...while forcing Austin Peay into 24 miscues. A 30.4% shooting night plagued the visitors.

A surprise of sorts in the starting lineup...as Walz chose to start Jude with Shoni, Bria, Sara and Asia. Playing time was evenly distributed...all the Cards seeing at least 15 minutes, except for Tia.

Emmonnie Henderson continues to impress...with ten points in sixteen minutes on 5-7 shooting. All 11 Cards who played scored.

Louisville returns to action on Tuesday with a road trip to Muncie to face the Ball State Cardinals.

THE FINAL WORD

I missed this one tonight, because of holiday obligations...but I got updated reports throughout the contest from a couple of readers via texts.

Several things stand out in this lopsided triumph:

- The Cards could have probably started Monny, Emmonnie, Megan, Cortnee and Shawnta, kept them in 40 minutes each and defeated this Austin Peay squad by 30. Those five actually went 16-29 from the floor and only three turnovers.

- The Cards are eleven deep. When Starr Breedlove recovers from her concussion-related symptoms and the Diamond from Bowling Green ever gets into a game...they'll be 13 deep.

- Cortnee Walton should be given a plaque or medal for going 3-3 from the charity stripe. She'll be counted on more and more this season to provide strength under the boards. She'll get fouled. Glad to see that she's making the free ones.

  1. A few points to note for the game:
-Shoni passed several milestones this game getting her 500th career assist and tallying her 300th career three pointer. The senior had a very good game.
    - The team had 27 assists on 43 made baskets. Those are the kind of stats you look for, that win games. The Cardinals passing was very, very good.
-Of particular note on the passing front, was the post players. The start of the second half had me musing aloud to my neighbors how very well the post had been moving the ball. Emmoninie Henderson had many nice passes, several that tallied in the assist column.
-Cortnee Walton played a great game. If I remember last year she came back from Christmas break not having done any work on her own during the break. When she returned from break she strained a muscle in her back. She learned a valuable lesson last year re: this and she commented on it last night in the post game presser. Offseason workouts. She put the time in and it has shown this year. I said early on that she has come back as the most improved player. We are seeing growth out of her much like we saw from Sara her freshman to sophomore seasons. Cortnee has become one of my favorites to watch as you can see the development and growth each time out.
-Jude had an off shooting night but she made up for it in taking care of the ball. She dished out 7 assists with only 1 turnover. It was a very good floor game for the junior.

  2. Tearra Banks is the Ballard alum, not Tiasha Gray. Banks did not start but played a solid 13 minutes with 6 points and 8 rebounds.

Not much to say about this one. I was most impressed with the interior passing and the elimination of unforced turnovers. Walton and Henderson's continued development will be key in March.

Impressed with Monny on D and Henderson's consistent ability to positively impact games with her limited minutes. Emmonnie has great hands and is showing she can pass the ball. If she can get in college ball shape she will be a force for the next four years. Soft shooter's hands and a good roundball IQ.
