Sunday Cardinal Couple -- Walz addresses the media

SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

- Walz at media day

- Volleyball hopes to continue streak

- Soccer in quarterfinals today

- Field Hockey says goodbye to seniors

Jeff Walz addressed the media Friday afternoon on women's media day for WBB at the KFC YUM! Center. The video is below. Some of the highlights/talking points:

-Asia Taylor and Tia Gibbs are 100% ready to go...or at least 100% on what their bodies will allow them to do

-Shawnta is still coming along. Not quite at 100% yet.

-Coach is not a big fan of cell phone usage during his press conferences. About the 8:00 mark...he unloads a high, tight brush back pitch at a rule violater.

-Jared Stillman is still a viable option for Walz's jokes. Walz explodes him...in jest...around the 22:00 mark

-The team will have a rock, paper, scissors contest on Nov. 7th. to determine who the five starters will be. Sarcastic Walz at his finest.

Louisville Volleyball looks to extend their winning streak to 11 games in the AAC when they take on the Memphis Tigers in Elvis-town today. The Cards are the only undefeated team left in The American...as they go through the competition for the second time in conference play.

Lee Mays, tie and all, will serve as head coach again for the nesting Anne Kordes. She should be bring in the next generation of Kordes any time now...according to sources.

Soccer also takes on Memphis...this one here at Cardinal Park...in quarterfinal action in the AAC Tournament. The Cards got a bye to reach the round of eight. Memphis knocked off Houston Friday night to advance.

Game gets underway around 4 p.m. today. The men's soccer team will play at 2 p.m. in their final home game of the year.

Why not start the day off today with a little field hockey? Louisville play their final home game of the regular season today against Kent State at noon in the Trager.

The Cards are assured of at least a three way tie in the BIG EAST. Currently UofL and Old Dominion are atop the conference standings and UConn attempts to join them there this afternoon against Temple. Go Owls!

It's senior day. Erin Schneidtmiller, Kelsey Rosenmeier and Michelle Amon get the sendoff.

Did you know....that today's article is the 1500th. posting of CARDINAL COUPLE? Hard to believe sometimes that we've put that much information out there about Louisville women's sports.

Think I'll have a cupcake in celebration. Stay tuned for the next 1500.

  1. I think the increased depth is largely an illusion. The team loses two impact bigs (Reid and Vails) and picks up one (Dyer) who isn't 100% yet. Walton is the only true 5, and the team has no depth there with Vails out. Taylor is a 3/4, not a 4/5. She's a great athlete but doesn't have the body to defend the post, and she's not a good enough shooter or ball handler to be effective at the 3, so there's a drop off if she comes in for Hammond or Slaughter. Gibbs does add depth at the 2/3, but in competitive games, her minutes will come at the expense of Jude. In a competitive game, I would probably go with only 7 players - Walton, Dyer, Hammond, Slaughter, Gibbs, S. Schimmel, and Smith. Five of these 7 can play two positions, with the exceptions being Walton (5 only) and Hammon (4 only). The #8 spot could be any of four players -Taylor, Deines, J. Schimmel, and Monny, but. absent foul problems with the first 7, I wouldn't expect any of them to play significant minutes in a competitive game.
