Cardinal Couple - Week in Review

THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

( Jeff McAdams with his weekly drive around the latest in women's sports news)

Last week we talked about the women's fall sports in alphabetical order.  Let's flip that around this week and go from back to front.

Volleyball

Its been a rough week for the Louisville Volleyball team.  After opening the season 1-1 in State College, PA with matches against Syracuse and Penn State, the Cards continued their life on the road with a weekend trip to Fargo North Dakota.  It was a tough trip with the Kordes Krew, and not just because of the sweltering conditions in the unair-conditioned Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse.  Coming away from the weekend 1-2, with a win over host North Dakota State, but losses to a Northern Iowa team that is showing itself to be a better team than many people have been giving them credit for, and a now-25th-ranked Wisconsin team helped sour the weekend.

Tuesday evening brought a hard-fought, and also unair-conditioned, matchup against #19 Kentucky at Memorial Coliseum in Lexington.  All 5 sets in the 3-2 Louisville loss were closely contested, 17-25, 25-23, 25-20, 19-25, 15-11, with many long volleys in the play.

The Cardinals are putting their game play together and looking better as they get experience under their belt playing a lot of very tough out-of-conference opponents.

Volleyball will finish their season opening epic road-trip with two more matches in Lexington with a Friday 5pm meeting with #4 Minnesota, and Saturday, after the UofL vs UK football game, taking on a good Pepperdine squad, also at 5pm.  Both matches are at Memorial Coliseum.

Women's Soccer

Women's Soccer also took a loss at the hands of the Wildcats down in Lexington.  A 2-0 affair, but the other stats show that the game was well contested with all of the stats categories being closely matched.  The Soccer team next treked to Oxford, OH, to take on Miami (OH).  The Cards got the job done in this one with a 3-2 overtime win.

Back home this weekend, the Cards welcome an in-state foe in Morehead State Friday at 5pm.  Follow that up with the University of Texas San-Antonio on Sunday at 1pm, and it will be another busy weekend at Cardinal Park.

Women's Golf

A great start for the Women's Golf team by taking all of the honors at the IU Fall Kickoff.  The women's Golf team has their first home event Monday and Tuesday, The Cardinal Cup, at The Cardinal Club.

Field Hockey

Perhaps the standout of the weekend for UofL women's athletics was the Field Hockey team.  With a 4-1 victory against an unfamiliar William and Mary team on Friday, followed by a 6-2 victory of Ohio University Sunday, Justine Sowry's Field Hockey team made a great showing.

Hoping to continue their winning ways, the Field Hockey plays Friday and Saturday in Ann Arbor both at 1pm against UC Davis and Michigan.

Cross Country

After an off week, the Women's Cross Country squad will be competing at the Bluegrass Cross Country Invitation in Lexington Saturday morning.
