Most Needed Upgrade for Women's Athletic Facilities -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

UPGRADES THAT NEED TO BE MADE

Summertime is a dead season for us at Cardinal Couple. When I mean dead, I mean dead. No games, quiet recruiting period, few personnel changes... crickets. We get interviews when we can, Walz is giving an update Wednesday at 11:30 -- and as fate would have it, none of our five "Couplites" are available to cover it live. We'll update you if they decide to "You Tube" it.

Concerning facilities, UofL has prided itself on top tier athletics facilities and while the facilities remain better than most around the country, that doesn't mean upgrades and changes aren't needed periodically. While some upgrades such as increased seating and parking are often impossible due to the structural engineering and lack of available space, there are plenty of upgrades that can be made.

Basketball - KFC Yum! Center

The KFC Yum! Center has been through several upgrades in recent years ranging from a new video board, to the audio system, to lighting, to bars, but one thing stands out to me. The court hasn't been changed or modified in several years. Spacing between floorboards on the court have continued to grow. It's almost to the point it can be a safety hazard for players and it just looks bad from a visual perspective.

There's been talks that a new court will be installed in the near future, but nothing has been confirmed for the upcoming season.

Field Hockey - Trager Stadium

Trager Stadium has had two major upgrades recently- a new turf and a new video board. Both look great, especially the freshly colored turf that replaced the old fading red. The biggest upgrade needed right now is the addition of backrests to the bleachers. Even if the entire stadium can't have chairback seats, the lower level, which houses most of the fans, would benefit from chairbacks.

I don't see this upgrade happening anytime soon. The cost of the turf was extremely costly for a non-profit sport. From a little bit of research, the new turf would've cost half a million dollars at the bare minimum, but I suspect it cost quite a bit more than that.

Lacrosse - Louisville Lacrosse Stadium

The two biggest complaints I've heard about the Louisville lacrosse stadium we've heard are the fact that there are no restrooms and no concession stand. Porta potties as the only available restroom at a Division I sport at Louisville seems a bit on the displeasing side, but without a major structural overhaul, restrooms and a concession stand won't happen. A new video board was recently installed and the turf remains in good condition. So the most needed upgrade that is plausible would be a concession cart. Rolling a cart up to sell water, Gatorade, chips, and candy seems like a pretty easy thing to do.

Will it happen anytime soon? I doubt it, but it is a pretty cheap set up and there's plenty of space outside of the fences in either end zone.

Soccer - Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium

Still regarded as one of the top collegiate soccer facilities in the country, Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium has put opposing teams in awe when they play there. The stadium features chairback seating, bleacher seating, grass berm seating, shade, a giant videoboard, and a playground. Being in the east end zone (The Boyleing Point) during sunset can be a bit blinding, but that's no easy fix. The flying balls onto Floyd Street has been a bit of a concern though. The biggest design flaw is the low wall behind the western end zone. A giant net could be installed to help with that and prevent the danger of soccer balls flying at cars driving by.

Discussion of adding some type of barrier have happened before, but no changes have ever been made. Until someone driving by gets injured or their vehicle sustains heavy damage from a flying soccer ball, I don't see anything happening.

Paulie adds: "It's a bit weary that you have to access media parking on the east side of the stadium and then climb 40 steps to reach press box level. The only other option is to walk around the stadium and then enter in the west entrance and take an elevator to the press box level.."

Softball - Ulmer Stadium

Ulmer Stadium has gotten new lights and seats in the last few years. The video board has also had upgrades in recent years too. There aren't any restrooms within the stadium itself, but they are located just outside the front gates so that isn't much of a concern either. The audio system has seen some better days. The marketing team has a habit of blowing out speakers at sporting events and softball hasn't been immune to that.

A new audio and speaker system might be in the works sooner than later. The softball program appears to be on the rise and making small upgrades seem doable.

Swim and Dive -Ralph Wright Natatorium

The Ralph Wright Natatorium has been around for quite some time. Due to this being an indoor facility that houses swim events, the humidity level is going to be high regardless of the HVAC system. There's also no room to expand the seating. For most events, there's plenty of seating but whenever rival Kentucky is in town the Natatorium turns into standing room only. However, it is a bit on the darker side inside the facility. Newer lights would enhance the experience, especially if events were to ever be televised or livestreamed.

Could new lights happen soon? Probably. We've seen quite a few different facilities have lighting upgrades since COVID-19 started.

Volleyball - L&N FCU Arena

Besides the obvious lack of adequate seating for the high demand of fans, L&N FCU Arena has seen a few upgrades over the years. New lighting is being installed this summer, more seats were added a couple years ago, the banners have been updated. However, it gets hot inside the arena. You can ask Jeff and his mom who wear t-shirts and shorts year round to limit the amount of sweating they deal with at volleyball. The HVAC system needs a major overhaul.

Word on the street is that the arena light upgrades were pretty costly for a non-profit sport, so I don't see an HVAC upgrade happening soon. I also don't think there's an arena only HVAC unit so this would require renovations to the entire student center.

And maybe, just maybe...the program needs a stand-alone facility of its own on campus. There are areas on the south side of Floyd Street where one might be constructed. With a $124 million athletics budget, maybe a sponsor could chip in as well and a facility could be build where they park vehicles now, across from the lacrosse stadium?

Happy Tuesday and Go Cards!

Cards in WNBA...Sunday report -- MONDAY CARDUNAL COUPLE

CARDS, BERGER IN SUNDAY ACTION

All five of the UofL WBB stars and Sacred Heart's Grace Berger (IU) were in action in WNBA contests Sunday.

Although none of the six started for their respective teams, they all did see action except fot Dixon.

WASHINGTON MYSTICS 77 -- CHICAGO SKY 69

Washington jumped out to a 10-point first quarter lead over Chicago, built it to 16 by halftime and held on for the eight-point win. Dana Evans saw 22 minutes for the Sky (5-7) and had three points, three assists and a rebound. For the Mystics, Myshia Hines-Allen saw 13 minutes totaled four points and had a rebound for the 7-4 Mystics

ATLANTA DREAM 100 -- INDIANA FEVER 94

Atlanta also got out to an early successful start against their foe Sunday -- the homestanding Indiana Fever -- and held on in a wild fourth quarter where 63 points were scored. A.D. put in 15 minutes for the (5-5) Dream and contributed seven points and an assist. The Fever drops to 4-7.  Grace Berger played six minutes for Indy and gave them two points and a rebound.

LAS VEGAS ACES 93 -- MINNESOTA LYNX 62

The Aces held the Lynx to just 21 second half points in the blowout win on the road. Las Vegas goes to 10-1 with the victory. Emily Engstler played 10 minutes off the bench and had four rebounds and two points. Minnesota drops to 3-8 with the loss.

CONNECTICUT SUN 83 -- LA SPARKS 74

(Give em "L", Beth and Liz !)

The Sun shone brightly in the 4th quarter and took the quarter and game by 11 points. No record of playing time in this one for Liz Dixon. It looks like Beth Burns drove across town to catch this one, though. Connecticut improves to 9-3 on the season and Los Angeles squad drops to 5-6.

Have a hopeful Monday!

It's Quiet Out There - Happy Fathers Day -- Sunday Cardinal Couple

Father's Day

Happy Father's Day to all of the fathers out there.  If you still have your father around, maybe take some time to tell him how much he means to you.  If you are a dad, thanks for all you do for your kids, and I hope you're being the best father you can be.

Quiet, Too Quiet

In Airplane, one of the greatest films of all time...well, maybe that's overdoing it slightly...just before the climax of the film, the character Steve McCroskey, played by the inimitable Lloyd Bridges, comments "Sure is quiet out there." to which Captain Rex Kramer, played by the equally inimitable Robert Stack responds, "Yeah, too quiet."

Yes, the dramatic technique is used in more than just Airplane, of course, it's common enough to have a full TVTropes page about it.  https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ItsQuietTooQuiet  But the notion applies at the moment for UofL Sports.

As far as I can tell, nothing particularly noteworthy happened with UofL Athletics yesterday.  Volleyball is still in Brazil, but have completed all of the matches that they were scheduled to play and are now just sightseeing.

Other sports are holding summer camps where they have the opportunity to teach up and coming players to improve their skills, and, to be sure, evaluate those players' skills and attitudes to play into recruiting decisions.  OK, maybe the emphasis really is more on the evaluation part.

Recruiting is a thing that is happening across sports, but that all happens kind of "in the background" at this time of year, with nothing really to bring to the pages of Cardinal Couple.

It's tempting to write this period off as unimportant, but nothing could be further from the truth, evaluation and recruiting is a critical part of the process of recruiting players to join a sports team, it's just not a very visible part of the process.

I will shout out one clinic that's going on right now, run my Cardinal greats Mykasa Robinson and Peyton Siva Jr., being held at the KFC Yum! Center in conjunction with Norton Sports Performance.  This one is a free clinic, and while I don't have a copy of their agenda of what they'll cover, with Robinson and Siva in charge, I suspect campers will need to bring the Defensive A game.

Cards in the Pros

Let's take a quick look around the Cards in the Pros.  It is father's day, maybe you're taking your day to watch some sports on TV, and if so, here's how you can follow some Cardinals Forever players.

Racing Louisville with Emina Ekic back in action will be playing NJ/NY Gotham today at 4pm.  The game is home, at Lynn Family Stadium downtown, so in-person viewing is certainly possible, though with some air quality issues in Louisville at the moment, and a forecast high of 88, I wouldn't blame you for catching this one on the telly.

In the WNBA, Super Sub Dana Evans and the Chicago Sky will be taking on Myisha Hines-Allen and the Washington Mystics at 3pm.  Streaming for this one is apparently on Twitter.  So that's a new one.  It will be via the WNBA's account at https://twitter.com/WNBA.

AD and the Atlanta Dream (and it just struck me that "Atlanta Dream" also abbreviates to "AD") will be playing the not-so-terrible Indiana Fever at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis at 4pm.  CBS Sports will have the video if you don't want to make the drive.

Liz Dixon with the Connecticut Sun head out west to play the Los Angeles Sparks at 7:30pm, streaming on NBA League Pass only.

And for the nightcap, Emily Engstler newly with the Minnesota Lynx will be playing at Las Vegas with a 9pm start.  NBA TV is where you'll be able to find this one.

Running Sports Welcome New Director -- SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Joe Franklin Replaces Cowper at Helm of T&F and Cross Country

If you're like me, you would be quite surprised to see the University of Louisville announcing a new director of Track & Field and Cross Country given the recent success of the program. The introductory article was sufficiently vague regarding what the naming of Joe Franklin meant for Dale Cowper at UofL. I frantically hunted on the roster and coach pages to see if he was only being relieved of some stresses so he could focus on his preferred role of throws.

I ultimately found a story from April that went a bit under the radar. It was then, April 5th to be exact, that Louisville announced Cowper would be departing after the 2023 season. Cowper led Louisville for 10 seasons including this one, and he had been a part of Louisville's staff for 17 years. Louisville's successes were numerous under his leadership, and he will be missed. His presence certainly remained felt for the rest of the season, as Louisville sent a large contingent to the NCAA Championships, with almost all of the qualifications coming after the announcement.

Cowper's admiration and respect for the University are represented by the early announcement of his departure, as that afforded Josh Heird and Company free rein to pursue a new coach out in the open. The Cards appear to have landed a good one, as they bring Joe Franklin back home from the University of New Mexico. Franklin has no specific ties to Louisville, but I say he's coming back home because he hails from Greencastle, Indiana. Greencastle is about an hour west of Indianapolis, and it would take about two and a half hours to drive to the city center from UofL. While that's not particularly close, it's significantly closer than UNM. It would take almost twice as long to fly from Albuquerque to Indianapolis as it would to drive from Louisville to Greencastle, and flying to Indy is only half the battle.

That's all a bit much to justify a throwaway line about Franklin's motivations in coming to Louisville, but what do you want from me? It's summer. Anyway, Franklin was a middle distance runner at Purdue, which he graduated from in 1991. Let me save you the hassle of looking it up: Purdue is an hour drive from Greencastle. You get to take one highway the whole way. Yippee, Indiana. After graduating, Franklin was immediately named the head cross country coach at DePauw (no, not DePaul) University. He stayed there for just one year, being named the conference coach of the year and then heading back to Purdue to be the assistant coach for the men's teams. After a couple of years at his alma mater, Franklin was named the head men's and women's T&F/CC coach at Butler University, where he coached from 1994 to 2007. In that 14 year span, he was named the Horizon League Coach of the Year 19 times. He earned the Great Lakes Region Men's COTY honor in 1998 and the National Men's COTY award in 2004.

Franklin was named to the head gig in Albuquerque in 2007. He was honored for his coaching many times. It was so many times that I am sorry to the UofL intern that was forced to type them all. Here's a screenshot so you can see for yourself.

In addition to the coaching honors, Franklin led UNM to 27 Mountain West team championships. The women's cross country team won 15 straight titles from 2008-2022. He oversaw 187 individual conference titles and 13 straight top-10 finishes in the NCAA women's cross country championship. Another draw to Louisville may be that his two women's cross country titles (2015 and 2017) both came at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville. The 2017 team boasted the individual winner as well.

All in all, Franklin looks like a wonderful addition to the Louisville ranks. Heird may be finding an under-the-radar star similar to the one Vince Tyra found in Dani Busboom Kelly. Time will tell. For now, we say welcome to Joe and his family, and we look forward to the continued success of the UofL women's cross country and track & field squads under his leadership.

Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast

My hiatus continues this week, and Daryl will be out again as well. Fortunately, Jared is back after his wedding went off without a hitch (because they got hitched) last weekend. It's sure to be an exciting show, as Paulie and Jeff rib Jared for his love affair with a cake or something. They'll almost certainly also talk about Louisville women's athletics. As always, you can check out the live stream of the show by going to the Cardinal Couple YouTube page and clicking on the live video. Jeff usually creates that about an hour before the show, which officially starts at 11 AM Eastern. If the live time doesn't work for you, there are plenty of playback options, so be sure to check out whichever is best for you!

Random Louisville Women's Sports News -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

We've come to the weekend at last, Cards fans! I am no Daryl, as she and I traded days so she could keep working hard with the Louisville Bats. Summertime can be tricky as there is usually minimal news for us to hit, especially with current teams and players.

We do have random news and notes to hit that have happened periodically throughout this past week that we might not have mentioned yet that we for sure want to hit before the weekend officially arrives.

Oh, and for the kiddies...the 80's sensation --  the Lover Boy video "Working for the Weekend" HERE

Louisville Volleyball in Brazil

Louisville volleyball continues their summer trip to Brazil and remained undefeated with a 3-1 victory over the Brazilian U21 National Team. The Cards took the match by winning three straight sets (25-23, 25-17, 25-19) after dropping the opening set 19-25.

Women's Soccer Representation with Indy Eleven

Louisville women's soccer has plenty of representation on Indy Eleven in their USL W League. Last night, Indy Eleven took on St. Charles, but fell 2-0. Current Cardinals Addie Chester and Lizzie Sexton were part of the starting XI.

Cardinal alum Maisie Whitsett entered the match as a substitute. She led the 'Eleven' with five shots. Current Cardinal Karsyn Cherry is also listed on the roster but did not play.

Ekic Back with Racing Louisville

Louisville women's soccer legend Emina Ekic returned to the pitch this week with Racing Louisville following a stint on the inactive list due to injury. She subbed in during the second half of Racing's 3-0 victory over Houston in front of roughly 5,000 fans and nearly 200 dogs.

Engstler Signs with Lynx

Louisville women's basketball alum Emily Engstler is back in the WNBA. She recently signed on with the Minnesota Lynx under a hardship contract due to the Lynx have two players out with injuries.

While Engstler is guaranteed to be on the roster for at least three weeks with multiple other players out, her contract is subject to change as other players return.

She will be eligible to play when the Lynx take on the Los Angeles Sparks tonight at 10:00 p.m. ET. The Lynx will remain out west when they face the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday at 9:00 p.m. ET.

Beginning with Bender, Is Louisville WBB back to refocusing on local talent? -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

CLASS OF 2024 GUARD BENDER A SACRED HEART STAR AND KEY FOR CARDS.

Reagan Bender

It's not that Louisville women's basketball and Jeff Walz haven't shown an interest in local talent over the years -- names like Monique Reid, Tia Gibbs, Candyce Bingham, the Slaughter sisters and Jess Laemmle are just a few of the well known locals who have gone to the Cardinals...it's just that there hasn't been much of a concerted effort in recent years to get the homegrown talent to stay and play at home.

Maybe Grace Berger is the best example here. Cardinals fans would have loved nothing better to have the now Indiana Fever WNBA player spend  her college career at the Ville...but, somewhere along the way, the connection failed. My guess is that Berger just might have been a better "team" player than the self-centered Hailey Van Lith, but, of course, we'll never know. Louisville's loss was IU's gain. It is entirely possible, I suppose, that Berger did not want to play for Louisville or maybe the Cards interest was enough to get her interested.

It's all water under the bridge now. I hope she does well in the WNBA.

So, it is with interest that we see Jeff Walz has offed 2024 Sacred Heart H.S. prospect Reagan Bender. She's been on three state championships as a starter and huge contributing scorer and will no doubt be a contender for Miss Basketball in this next season. A lot of schools are after Bender and if the Cards could capture her, it just might help convince class of 2025 Sacred Heart superstar and teammate ZaKiyah Johnson that Louisville just might be the place to be.

Leah Macy

Leah Macy is another 2025 wunderkind -- the Mercy sophomore is 6'2" and getting plenty of attention from the nation's elite college programs. Arizona, Oklahoma, LSU, Kentucky, Louisville, Tennessee, Ohio State are just a handful of the top programs who are trying to woo Macy to their campus. And, the Jags also have Alyssa Murphy at a guard spot and she's one that is drawing national attention.

On Bender, it's not as if she just suddenly appeared on the horizon. She's the niece of Sacred Heart coach Donna Moir and had attended Louisville camps for several years now  She's scored over 1300 points in her three years at Sacred Heart so far and has 162 threes in her time as a Valkyrie. .

Zakiyah Johnson

The message should be crystal clear to Coach Walz and his staff...these next couple of years are a golden opportunity to draw and land some of the best talent in the nation. Talent that is in your back yard.

How important is the challenge of "transfer portal" mania compared to incoming freshman. Let's face it, the Cards stumbled with last year's freshman -- only Mobley and Harris remain, losing Brown, Lester and Walker to the portal. Would more playing time kept those three around??? Or, was the die cast and Louisville wanted to go with the experienced transfers. Not playing freshmen is certainly a way to keep you from having much luck in recruiting them, and I got a sizable amount of queries on why Walz wasn't playing them. To be clear...Lester had agreed to redshirt before the season ever started. Mobley was still recovering from injury and the Cards were pretty deep at guard.

Let's hope the Cards go for the high school stars here in the Kentuckiana area. It just might help attendance, too, and pave the way for more local talent down the road.

Blunders with Linz DuVall and Seygan Robins probably couldn't have been avoided, that was a case of better talent winning out...but it's not like Louisville won any national championships either. And Duvall became a local legend and huge star at NKU...could that have happened here for her?  Local kids who can play are worth their weight in gold to a program.

It's time for Walz and the staff to go mining and prospecting here in the local hills again. It.  just may result in paydirt.

Volleyball Cruising Along in Brazil -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

ANOTHER MARRIED COUPLE IN THE CENSUS ROLLS...

(Ladies and gentlemen, I present the Andersons !)

We're glad to be back! After a magical wedding, Katy and I have returned home from South Carolina officially married and back to the real world. We would like to thank everyone for their warm wishes and kind words. While it will be some time before we get the professional photos back from our photographer, plenty of friends and family captured many of the moments on their own phones and were kind enough to share those.

Katy looked absolutely stunning in our wedding dress and even brought me to tears as she walked down the aisle in the church.

Volleyball Wins Opening Matches in Brazil

Between their various adventures throughout Brazil, Louisville volleyball still is competing in friendly exhibitions.

The Cards began their tour with a match against Clube Paineiras do Morumbi U-21 team on June 10. Louisville swept the match 5-0 (25-16, -18, -12, -20, -17). While standard American collegiate volleyball plays 'best of five' with the if-needed fifth set being to 15, the two teams agreed to play all five sets to 25 each for the extra practice.

Louisville then faced Sao Jose Volei team yesterday. The Cards came out on top 4-1 (25-18, 25-19, 25-13, 21-25, 25-9). This was another match that the teams agreed to play five full sets to get the extra practice.

Any concern about the sole loss in the fourth set? No. It's all exhibition play and the coaching staff is purposely playing mix-n-match with players on the court to see how players can gel with each other and find the best fit. Plus, even the best volleyball teams lose sets regularly.

While we are used to seeing Elena Scott rep the libero jersey, Coach DBK has rotated the jersey through a few faces. Don't worry, Scott is still poised for the starter position come regular season.

Next on the schedule is a trip to Rio de Janeiro for some sightseeing and more volleyball.

Happy Tuesday and Go Cards!

CARDS in Sunday WNBA Action -- MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

FOUR CARDS IN SUNDAY WNBA GAMES

We are fond of following the pursuits of Louisville Cardinals women's basketball players in the WNBA and Sunday had four Cards in action.

LAS VEGAS ACES 93 - CHICAGO SKY 80

Dana Evans did not start for the Sky, but saw 26 minutes in a loss to the 8-1 Aces. She managed 10 points for Chicago (5-5) and had a team high eight assists for the Sky. Home-standing Las Vegas is atop the Western Conference Standings and A'Ja Wilson had another huge game for Vegas.

CONNECTICUT SUN 89 - ATLANTA DREAM 77

Two former Cards had the potential to face off in this one -- Liz Dixon (Connecticut) and AD Durr (Atlanta), but Dixon did not see action (a coach's decision). AD came off the bench for ATL and totaled 17 minutes of playing time and nine points.

The Sun are atop the Eastern Conference with a 8-2 record and the Dream are still struggling a bit in the early season with a 2-5 mark. ATL trailed 48-44 at the half against the visiting Sun, but Connecticut won the decisive 4th quarter 24-17.

WASHINGTON MYSTICS 71 - SEATTLE 65

The visiting Mystics improved to 5-3 on the season with a win over 1-5 Seattle, a game that Washington led 46-21 at the half before coasting in.

The Mystics are slowly working Myisha Hines-Allen back into the lineup and MHA saw 11 minutes and grabbed six rebounds. She also added a free throw to the Mystics win. The Mystics got the win without Elena Della Donne as well -- who sat with an undisclosed injury.

A Gray Day in Kentucky, and a First Glimpse at Volleybal

A Brooke Gray Day in Kentucky

It's been quite a weekend for Ballard's Brooke Gray.  After being named Gatorade Kentucky Player of the Year on Friday, Gray led her Bruins to win the state championship yesterday over Henderson County, 12-4.  She then picked up the tournament MVP honor, and was also named the 2023 Kentucky Miss Softball.

All of that, in roughly 48 hours, makes for quite a whirlwind weekend for the senior

Some final season stats for Gray's senior year: 29-0 win/loss record, 0.81 ERA, and 307 strikeouts in 189 2/3 innings pitched.

The lefty pitcher will be joining an already solid pitching staff at UofL in the fall, though a staff that is losing one of the best to have done it at UofL in Taylor Roby.  Gray will be the second lefty hurler on the staff, joining Cassie Grizzard in the southpaws-in-the-circle club.

Gray and Grizzard, along with Alyssa Zabala, Gabby Holloway, and Sam Booe...plus incoming freshman Lindsey Mullen... should create a good pitching staff that the team can build on to hopefully see another year of improvement in performance.

A Brief Glimpse of Volleyball

Volleyball is, of course, on their tour of Brazil, and they had their first match of the trip yesterday against Clube Panaireinas do Morumbi U-21 in São Paulo.  There was a low production stream that was, I believe, posted on the team's facebook page, but it only last to 19-12 in the first set before it died due to technical difficulties.  The team has a social media person with them on the trip, but not a Sports Information Director, so most of the information available is scattered among various social media posts.

This is the first opportunity to see the assembled team that will be competing in the fall, so I tuned in with interest to see what initial thoughts on lineups looked like.  Louisville "won" the match 5-0 with scores of 25-16, 25-18, 25-12, 25-20, 25-17.

First, a couple of apparent injury notes based on what I saw on stream.  Nina Moorer is still in a boot from some stress fractures that she experienced during spring play, and Cara Cresse has some sort of cast on her left wrist and part of her hand.  I have no details of the nature of the injury prompting that.

For the lineup, keep in mind, of course, that these are friendlies, they don't count for any official record, so lineups should be expected to be fluid and experimental, but they will give us some idea of what the coaching staff is thinking about for the fall.

The biggest surprise I saw in the lineup in the first set was incoming freshman Reese Robins playing right side in place of Aiko Jones.  Robins was listed primarily as a middle blocker, but with the ongoing position battle on the squad at middle, getting Robins to the right side may give her an opportunity to see some playing time that she may not have had otherwise.  Could we see a 6-2 offense in the fall?  With Aiko Jones, Nina Moorer, and Reese Robins all having spent some, or a lot in Jones' case, of time out there, it only leaves a question of how well we can swap out setters and maintain consistency.

Phekran "PK" Kong, and Hannah Sherman were the middles for the start.  Crese was dressed and participated in warmups, but I don't know if she ended up playing during the match.  The cast is on her non-hitting hand, so it is conceivable that she played.

Another incoming freshman, Molly Urban subbed in for Reese Robins as a DS for back-row playing time.

From some social media bits, the team had 20 aces in the five sets, and incoming freshman Kamden Schrand accounted for five of them.  Allana Bankston, yes another incoming freshman, apparently got nine kills on 17 swings for either .450 or .412 hitting.  Dan Meske said .450 in the audio of his Instagram story, but the caption on it said .412.  I suspect .412 is the correct number.  Regardless, an impressive debut for the Omahan.

They Tied the Knot

We want to extend a hearty congratulations to our Cardinal Couple colleague Jared Anderson and his beautiful wife Katy Whitesell.  The two got married yesterday in a wonderful celebration with family and friends in South Carolina.  We have yet to receive Jared's pictures from the event, but expect to have them shortly.

I kid, of course.

Congratulations to the bride and groom.  And the cake.  (Check out the CCRHP, or Jared and my twitter accounts, for explanation of that one.)

Say you missed it? Fear not, the replay is online at the link below{

It was a bit of a throwback for yesterday's CCRHP, with only Paulie and I on the call.  Daryl was a late cancellation having come down with a bit of an illness, and of course we hope she's feeling better soon.  Jared was at a piece of cake's nuptials, and Case will be out for various events for the next couple of weeks.

Paulie and I had a great conversation about Softball, and what it looks like for the future.  We dug into the signed class, including singing the accolades of Brooke Gray, and the prospects for the future.  We did touch a brief bit on volleyball, and speculated on potential news from Lacrosse.

We also asked the question:  What is going on with Kay Morrissette>

For an agenda with nothing but question marks on it, we managed to find plenty to talk about and had fun.  Check it out!
