Walz pleased with U 19 effort...looking forward to Spain and Russia -- Wednesday Cardinal Couple

The USA U19 women's basketball team will bus down to Denver from Colorado Springs this morning to fly to Spain. We were able to catch up with assistant coach Jeff Walz and discuss the squad. The entire, seven minute interview will be played on our Saturday radio show on WCHQ 100.9 FM and on the Internet at www.crescenthillradio.com. The show airs at 11 a.m.

Here are some highlights of the interview:

On the two scrimmages against the USA Pan American team:

"We were pleasantly surprised on the results. The first day we won against them by six or eight Sunday. Monday night, we lost by three...we had a couple chances to tie it at the end but just couldn't get a three to drop..."

On Mariya Moore's performances with the squad:

"She's doing great and I'm really proud of her. She was our second leading rebounder in the scrimmages. She is doing an unbelievable job of keeping the ball alive and playing defense. Mariya plays hard and that makes things happen for us."

On the trip today:

"We'll leave the hotel around 6 a.m. Wednesday morning to bus to Denver and leave out of there around 10:30 to fly to Washington D.C. I'm excited about that because I'm picking up my son there and he's accompanying me to Spain and Russia. We'll leave Washington and then fly to Spain...a very long day for us."

On Spain and Russia:

Coaches with athletic trainer Summer McKeehan (Duke)
and team physician Dave Walden
"Obviously, we want to take care of business on the court but we also want to make sure that the players get a broad cultural experience during our time there. For some of them, it may be the only opportunity to experience a trip like this and see these areas."

On the language differences:

"I took two years of Spanish in high school but I wish I would have taken those classes a little more seriously. Honestly, we'll be doing everything as a group and I'm sure we'll have plenty of people on hand to help us with that..."

( THE ENTIRE INTERVIEW CAN BE HEARD ON OUR RADIO SHOW SATURDAY AT 11 A.M. ON WCHQ 100.9 FM AND ALSO ON THE INTERNET AT crescenthillradio.com)

  1. Word is that Katie Lou Samuelson has returned home on a family issue and may not make the trip with the U 19 team.

    1. Can you provide any insight into this comment, or a link to support? If you are following along the U19 journey you can see that KLS is not showing up in any photos.
Whatever the case, I hope she and her family are in good health and whatever may be keeping her away (if that is the case) is easily remediable.
