Softball and Volleyball updates -- Tuesday Cardinal Couple

Softballers Go Pro

After finishing their eligibility this year, two Cardinal Softballers are getting a paycheck for their playing.  Right Fielder Kelsi Jones was signed by the Chicago Bandits in open tryouts.  Whitney Arion was likewise signed by the Pennsylvania Rebellion after open tryouts to continue her career playing shortstop.

In an interesting twist, the season opener for the NPF (National Pro Fastpitch) league was between the Chicago Bandits and the Pennsylvania Rebellion.  Neither Jones or Arion played in the opener, but by the third day of play, both had broken into the starting lineup.

Chicago came out on the winning side of all three matchups with the Rebellion over the weekend with scores of 2-0, 5-0, and 12-4.

Best wishes to the latest Cards to make the Pro ranks.

Volleyballer on Junior National Team

Incoming Cardinal freshman Molly Sauer out of Assumption High School has been named to the US Junior National Volleyball team for the second year in a row.  Molly will be playing Libero for the US team, and is expected to play the same position for the Cardinals in the fall.

During Sauer's stint with the Junior National team last summer, the US team won the NORCECA Women's U20 Continental Championship.

This year, the team will train and compete from July 4th through July 12th in Trieste, Italy and Maribor, Slovenia.  During this week, the team will compete with Senior National Teams from Croatia and Israel, as well as Junior National Teams from Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia.  They will also compete with Hungary's U22 team.  Other matches may get scheduled.

Following the training and friendly matches, the team will travel to Pula, Croatia to compete in the Global Challenge.

Good luck to the USJNT in Europe.

  1. Kirsten Verdun, ex DePaul pitcher and UofL graduate assistant in the 2015 season is also on the Chicago team as a pitcher.

    1. WASHINGTON, PA—May 29, 2015 -The Pennsylvania Rebellion fall to the Chicago Bandits by a final score of 2-0 in Friday’s home opener at CONSOL Energy Park.

Kirsten Verdun got the call for the Bandits in the circle against the Rebellion starter, Angel Bunner. Both pitchers shut down any hopes of any early offensive start for either team, with no runs allowed through the first three innings.

(It would appear UofL has a great graduate assistant. I wonder why DePaul didn't grab here?)

  2. Are Arion and Jones the first-ever Cards to play pro softball? Seem to remember some pretty good players in the past for UofL. Live in Chicago and will definitely go see games, especially since Verdun is pitching. Great DePaul pitcher.

    1. They also have Lacey Waldrop, from FSU on their pitching staff, as well. Another great pickup for them.

The PA Rebellion picked up Miranda Kramer of WKU for their pitching staff, too. Some big names joining the NPF.

I don't know about any past Cards going pro in the NPF...its possible, we've certainly had some great players in past years, but I don't recall any specifics.

  3. Sad news from the WNBA Transactions world today. The Minnesota Lynx have waived Asia Taylor. We'll have more on this in the Wednesday Cardinal Couple edition. Co-founder and administrative manager (and my wife) Sonja will be in a state of mourning when I break the news to her later this evening.

    Lynx? You stinks.

    1. Just saw that. It sucks. Hopefully she can still focus overseas and keep balling. Will probably make as much or more money over there as in the W in any case.

Real life isn't much fun sometimes. The last cut is really tough. Been there done that. You kinda feel like you've made it by that point and then the rug gets yanked out from under you.

      Such a nice kid though...
