Sunday Cardinal Couple -- Previewing the ACC : Georgia Tech

SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

- HAPPY FATHER'S DAY

- Georgia Tech a past and future foe

If you're a Dad, Happy Father's DAY! If you know a Dad, help him celebrate.

Today is Dad's day. I started the celebration by sleeping in. Sorry CC is a little late today...but we aren't exactly an exact science over here and I needed (and enjoyed) the extra three hours of "snore time" this morning

We've been previewing the members of the ACC that Louisville women's athletics will compete against. Georgia Tech is next in our alphabetical look at the programs.

The Ramblin' Wreck is a foe from year's past...Louisville was in the Metro Conference with Ga. Tech for three years before the ACC came to claim the Yellow Jackets.

Alumni of note:

- Jimmy Carter...president of the United States
- Jeff Foxworthy...comedian
- Chris Bosh...NBA player
- Stephon Marbury...NBA player

Georgia Tech sticks to the basics when it comes to women's sports:

Women's Sports

BASKETBALL

The Lady Techsters went 20-12 overall last season and 9-7 in ACC play. They were selected for the NCAA Tournament but bowed out in the first round to LSU. Kaela Davis is the returning star for Machelle Joseph's squad. Louisville tried to get her to come be a Cardinal. Current UofL assistant women's basketball coach Sam Purcell came to Louisville from an assistant's job at Ga.Tech.

CROSS COUNTRY

Cross Country finished 12th in the ACC Championships. They also travelled to Louisville las season to compete in the Louisville classic and finished 11th.

SOFTBALL

23-24 overall and 11-17 in the ACC. They were eliminated from the ACC tournament by Florida State in the first round and did not get an invite to the NCAA Championships.

VOLLEYBALL

Tonya Johnson resigned as volleyball head coach at the end of a and Michelle Collier took the job. Ga. Tech went 12-20 overall last year and went 6-14 in conference.

ANALYSIS

The Yellow Jackets seem to be firmly established as a middle-of-the-pack ACC finisher in women's sports. Louisville shouldn't have any trouble with them in hoops, volleyball and softball.

They don't golf, play lacrosse, soccer or field hockey at Georgia Tech. They do have a great engineering school. I know engineers who really like soccer a lot. What's the deal, Ga. Tech?

FAVORITE GA. TECH MEMORY:

Baffert is a horse trainer. Georgia
has no horse racing tracks. Why
would anyone want to go there?
Finally coming to the realization that long-time Georgia Tech basketball coach Bobby Cremins wasn't Bob Baffert or Captain Kangaroo's brother.

Louisville has never played Ga.Tech in WBB. That'll change in the 2014-15 season....Sam Purcell gets a reunion with his former coaching associates in the KFC YUM! Center this winter.
