Softball Splits Double Header at BC -- SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Cards Drop Game 1, Win Game 2

It's not often that you get a weekend series rubber match on Saturday, but that will be the case when the Cards and Eagles get today's game underway at 1PM. After the schedule change that Daryl mentioned yesterday, the teams played a pair yesterday afternoon, with Louisville scoring more runs overall in the two games but only winning one.

Louisville's offense wasn't able to support Alyssa Zabala in the first game, though her 100th appearance for Louisville turned into a pretty sparkling start. Zabala played a bit with the strike zone, keeping the ball out of play a total of 12 times, as her five walks weren't great but she struck out seven batters in her six innings (a complete game since Louisville was away and trailed after the top of the seventh). Zabala gave up just four hits and finished with three runs all earned. Boston College struck first, and it was the first inning where Zabala gave up most of the negatives in her stat sheet. BC had just one hit in the inning, but Zabala gave up three walks and allowed a run to score on a wild pitch. She had one strikeout. That means, if you're doing the math at home, her remaining five innings had just three hits, two walks, and six strikeouts. Like I said, it turned into a sparkling start.

Louisville was able to find only three hits in the game and they didn't earn any walks. However, they only struck out three times, so it was largely a matter of hitting the ball right to the defense. Char Lorenz had two of the three hits, picking up a two-out double in the first and a triple in the fourth. Madison Pickens further picked on the center fielder after Lorenz tripled to left center by going to right center for a triple of her own and scoring Lorenz from third. Unfortunately, Louisville couldn't bring Pickens in after she reached with one out, and the teams headed to the bottom of the fourth tied.

Zabala gave up a walk in the bottom half but kept the game tied to give the Cards a chance to take the lead late. Louisville responded with a three-up, three-down inning, which was just their second at the time but was the first of three straight to end the game. In the fifth, Zabala gave up a lead-off walk. As they say, walks will haunt, and this one did. A strikeout was followed by a double to put runners on second and third with one out. An infield grounder led to a play at the plate, but with a base open, it wasn't a force play and the runner beat the tag. That set up a sacrifice fly for a second run in the inning and a strike out ended it, but too late. As I mentioned, Louisville didn't get on base in the final two innings.

The second game looked like it might be a similar story offensively, and BC again scored first. This time it was Brooke Gray with the start and she pitched a complete game of her own. Gray gave up two runs, both earned, on six hits and two walks. She struck out six. The first run of the game came on a BC homer in the bottom of the first, and Gray locked down from there with five straight scoreless innings.

Louisville was able to find the bases much more frequently in the second game, and good things often happen when they do. The team recorded eight hits and two walks, a marked improvement from the first game. Despite the increase in baserunners, Louisville was unable to find the plate until the fifth inning. In that one, they proved that anyone on the team is a threat on the base paths. Bri Despines walked to open the inning and stole second. She then came around to score on a Jac Hasty single, and Hasty advanced to second on the throw. Hasty's advancement was moot, as Taylor Monroe sent a ball over the fence to score the pair. With nobody out, Louisville turned over the lineup but couldn't score any additional runs. They did lead 3-1, though.

With blood in the water, Louisville looked to capitalize after a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth for BC by loading the bases in the sixth. The Hasty walk, which came on a twelve-pitch at bat, was with two outs, though, and a fly out came up short of a grand slam to instead record the third out. BC thought they might have new life after surviving the threat as they opened the bottom of the sixth with a single, but Gray responded with two strikeouts and a pop out to end the inning.

After going down in order in the fifth, the 9-1-2 hitters got to work in the seventh. Ally Alexander opened with a double and advanced to third on a productive ground out from Lotus. Chelsea Mack laid down a bunt single which froze the defense trying to prevent the run from scoring. With all eyes on Alexander at third, Mack advanced to second on what technically counts as a stolen base. Lorenz popped up to set up two outs, but Pickens was up to the moment and hit a double to left to score both runs.

Gray came back out for the seventh and looked well in control holding a four run lead. She got a fly out to open the inning before giving up her second home run of the day to make it 5-2. A fly out and a foul out ended the game.

Louisville was there or thereabouts throughout the two games yesterday, and they'll look for the first series win in a hot minute by taking the finale today. The game is at 1PM and will be available on ACC Network Extra.

Schedule update for Softball series vs BC -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

FRIDAYS WITH DARYL

Good morning readers.. its safe to say spring has sprung in the Ville.  It is a little bit of a bummer in town this weekend as the annual Thunder Over Louisville festival was cancelled for this weekend due to last week's storms and the flooding at the waterfront.  Bummer!

The Louisville Cardinals have headed north for an ACC battle with the Boston College Eagles.

There was a schedule change on Thursday afternoon to the following adjustments...

Friday 4/11 2pm double header and Saturday 4/12 1pm available on the ACCNX.
The Cardinals come into the matchup with a 20-17 record and a 3-9 ACC record. The Eagles sport a 17-19 overall record with a 3-9 ACC record.

Louisville leads the series 14-8 and 8-1 at home. The Eagles took the last series 2-1 with UofL taking the Sunday meeting. Like the Cards, BC is coming off a midweek loss to a local rival squad.

Senior outfielder Jordan Stephens boasts a 0.324 batting average on 35 hits, including six home runs, to lead the team in all three categories.

The Eagles are lead by two pitchers, freshman Bailey Kendziorski And sophomore Kelly Colleran splitting the duties in the circle. After beginning her college career with Boston University, Colleran got the start in the circle in the midweek rivalry match with BU and took the loss after giving up 2 runs on 8 hits and struck out 6 batters.

Miscellaneous

After the school announced a contract extension for men's head basketball coach Pat Kelsey the school also approved an extension for lacrosse coach Scott Teeter.  Congratulations to them.

Softball Slide Continues -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Cards Lose to IU 8-3

Louisville softball canceled their ACC bye week double-header against Oakland due to weather, which meant they entered last night's regional rivalry game with the taste of last week's unfortunate loss to Kentucky still in their mouths. Whether that played a part in their undoing in last night's game is hard to say, but it seems fair to assume they would have liked having the get-right opportunity to split the two difficult outings. As it was, Louisville saw an early lead disappear before the opposing offense opened it up for the second game in a row.

Char Lorenz returned to the lineup for this one and immediately got back to her strong offensive ways. After Easton Lotus walked to open the game, her steal was rendered moot by Chelsea Mack walking behind her. Lorenz stepped in with a runner in scoring position and smacked a single up the middle. The hit was too shallow to send Lotus home, though, and the bases were loaded with nobody out instead. Bri Despines kept the bases loaded but failed to drive in a run when she grounded into a fielder's choice force out at home. Ally Alexander also grounded out, but hers was more productive. Shockingly so, in fact, as she earned a two-RBI fielder's choice. Her grounder to short was thrown to second to get the first out while a run scored, but instead of eating the throw to hold the runner at third, the second baseman threw to first to try to get the double play. Alexander beat the throw and Lorenz came home in the meantime. Taylor Monroe hit the third straight ground out and the inning ended with Louisville holding a 2-0 lead.

Alyssa Zabala got a ground out to open the game but found herself in a slight pickle after giving up two straight singles. A foul out put Louisville in a two-out situation and a grounder to Alexander at third gave them an easy third out when she stepped on the bag for the force out and an unassisted fielder's choice.

The Cards threatened to score again in the second, with an error on a throw behind Camryn Lookadoo at second base allowing her and Easton Lotus to move up a base to put runners on second and third with two outs. A full-count strikeout ended the opportunity. Zabala gave up a walk to open the second and IU tried to employ some small ball. A sacrifice bunt put Indiana's potential first run in scoring position, but Zabala responded with two strikeouts to maintain the Louisville lead.

Again the Cards put a runner on base early in the third, with Lorenz reaching on an error and advancing to second. She advanced to third on a one-out sacrifice bunt, but she was stranded there for Louisville's fourth runner left on base. Those runners would prove to be costly. IU greeted Zabala in the third with a first-pitch home run. Slightly rattled, Zabala played with the corners a bit too much and walked two straight batters on five pitches each. In a jam, she earned a foul out and a fly out to put the defense back on level footing with two outs and runners still only on first and second. A single up the middle tied the game at two before a ground out ended the inning.

Entering the fourth, it was a new ball game, so Madison Pickens responded to IU's third inning homer with one of her own. It was the only run Louisville would score, as they stranded another runner at first base, but they had retaken the lead 3-2. Their newfound lead was short-lived.

A pair of singles opened the bottom of the fourth, and Zabala heard her name called from the bullpen. Sam Booe entered and immediately made her job more difficult by walking the first batter she saw on four pitches. Bases loaded, nobody out. Worst spot to be in for a defense. A strikeout improved the situation slightly, but a full-count single on the 12th (!!) pitch of the at bat erased the Louisville lead and gave them a deficit for the first time. A steal put runners on second and third with one out, and IU laid down a squeeze bunt. Squeezes don't really work in softball since the runner can't leave early. The result of the play, since Louisville didn't want to give up a run for an out, was a bunt single, and the bases were reloaded with one out. Another two-strike single, this time only on the ninth pitch, scored another run and a fly out to center worked as a sacrifice with IU's sixth run tagged and scored. A strikeout mercifully ended the inning, but Louisville trailed 6-3. They would not recover.

The Cards had one runner reach in each of the final three innings, but they did not earn another hit. The runners came on an HBP, a walk, and an error. The seventh inning saw IU pick up the dreaded four-out inning (with three strikeouts), as Lorenz reached on an error after her third strike was dropped. The middle of the order struck out behind her and that was that. IU had poured it on against Booe in the fifth with a single and a homer before Izzy Harrison relieved her. Louisville's defense got to flash in that inning, with a one-out fly ball resulting in a double play. Runners stood on first and second, and a ball high and deep to left gave IU the chance to tag and attempt to advance. Lorenz made the catch and fired to Alexander, though, and the runner was tagged out to end the inning. Harrison returned in the sixth and gave up a single and walk before Brooke Gray came on to close the game in a desperate situation for the Cards for the second week in a row.

Overall, Louisville managed just three hits, five walks, and reached on an HBP and two errors. They struck out six times and stranded eight runners on base. Meanwhile, IU benefitted from no Cardinal errors, but they had eight hits and seven walks. They struck out just five times and they managed to score eight runs while leaving 10 on base. Yes...  it could have been worse. For the second midweek rivalry game in succession, Louisville pitching wasn't up to the task. All eight runs were earned and the Cards offense, while not spectacular, had put the team in a position to win twice. It is what it is.

Louisville returns to conference play this weekend, but they remain on the road. The Cards will head to Chestnut Hill for a three-game set against Boston College starting tomorrow at 4.

Until next time, Go Cards!

Cards Softball to face IU in Bloomington -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Cards Look to Get on Win Streak with Visit to IU

Louisville Softball looks to end a four game losing streak this season and also a four game losing streak to Indiana when they visit IU for a Wednesday match up.

It's a 6 p.m game, but will only  be available for viewing on the Big Ten Network Plus, unless you make the trip to Bloomington to watch it live. Big Ten Network Plus is a "pay for" channel and not automatically provided to Louisville viewers on cable or free on the Internet. .

Louisville is 20-16 overall on the season and seems to be in a cycle lately where they win their non-conference matchups and lose their ACC games. UofL has lost four in a row to the Hoosiers, but won six in a row against them before that, and are 20-7 in the history of the series.

IU enter the contest 26-10.

Louisville had their two game series against Oakland cancelled due to expected (and received) inclement weather and the skies did unload on the Louisville area, with a lot of road and streets down by the Ohio River still unpassable. Schools in the Louisville area are still on "NTI"  as of Wednesday. The Cards did fall to UK 8-3 back on April 2nd in their last game. Games scheduled against Oakland were cancelled over last weekend and the kickoff to Derby festivities in Louisville, the huge fireworks and air show Thunder Over Louisville, was also canceled this year, since the Great Lawn, where any gather to view the event,  is still underwater.

For Louisville on the softball diamond..., it seems to be a situation where the Cards can't get across the plate very well lately. Virginia Tech outscored Louisville 27-7 in their three game series back on March 14-16. UNC outscored the Cards 31-15 in the series at Chapel Hill, and UofL hasn't had a 10 run plus offensive performance since they bombarded NKU back on March 18th in Highland Heights.

UofL isn't a team that is built on the long ball, either.  The have just 19 home runs on the season, while giving up 37. Char Lorenz is the only Card with more than five home runs on the season..,the redshirt freshman from Munster, IN. has six on the season and also leads Louisville in RBI's.

Cards pitching isn't awful this year, but Holly Aprile has used seven pitchers in 36 games and they have a combined ERA of 4.37 per game. . Alyssa Zabala is still the "ace" of the staff, at 8-5...the other two regular starters are Sam Booe (4-3) and Brooke Gray (5-6).

Lpuisville is currently tied for 12th place in the ACC Standings, at 20-16 and 3-9 in ACC play, tied with Boston College. 12 teams make the ACC  Tournament this year, a single elimination format. The CARDS have four (3) game series left against ACC opponents...at Boston College, at Virginia, hosting FSU and at Pitt, to end the regular season.

Tennis Upsets Clemson -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Tennis Upsets Clemson at Home

Hopefully everyone survived the storms and floods over the last week. While much of the region seems to be underwater, including portions of downtown Louisville, the Louisville women's tennis team went indoors to square off against #35 Clemson in an ACC match-up.

#70 Louisville (extended rankings) pulled off a 4-3 upset against #35 Clemson in one of the tightest battles of the season. The Cards improve to 11-8 on the season and 3-7 in the ACC, tied for their most ever wins in a single season in the ACC. The Cards also secured the first winning regular season (post-season not included) since the COVID-19 shortened 2019-2020 season.

The Cards took the doubles point 2-1 with Berta Miret / Lika Peresypkina and Elena Noguero / Elisabeth Iila earning wins on their courts. UofL would split the individual court matches 3-3, but the 4-3 edge earned the win. The singles court winners were Alice Otis, Elena Noguero, and Allie Gretkowski.

Clemson tied the match at 3-3 with Court One being the only match left to be played. On the lead court, Otis was taking on Clemson's top player Sophia Hatton. Otis pulled off the win 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in a tight battle to secure the upset.

Louisville remains home for their final two matches of the regular season- Friday at 4:00 vs Syracuse and Sunday at 12:00 vs Boston College.

Happy Tuesday and Go Cards!

WBB Championship -- MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Good morning

Reporting from home again this morning as UofL has moved to remote work due to the past week's storms and flash flooding.   It gets pretty dangerous in the area so I appreciate their willingness to adjust.

The women's basketball season has concluded in Tampa Sunday afternoon with the UCONN Huskies back on top of the college basketball world and Paige Bueckers, aka Paige Buckets, and the extremely talented Huskies secure the programs first title in almost a decade.   UCONN had won 6 out of 8 prior to the drought.

UCONN won its 12th title in 2025 by beating Arkansas St 103-34, South Dakota St 91-57, Oklahoma 82-59, USC 78-64, UCLA 85-51 and South Carolina 82-59.

Louisville fell to the Huskies 85-52 back in December 2024.  The last time the Cards beat UCONN was when they won 69-64 in the 2021 season at a neutral site and the Huskies haven't visited the KFC Yum! Center since January 2019 and 2014 the time prior to that.

Congrats to Karen J for winning our Cardinal Couple bracket challenge for this year!  She really knows her stuff and I enjoy our conversations about the games each season.   She's a fellow UofL employee and regular attendee of basketball and baseball games.

Already looking forward to next season :P

Make it a great week!

LAX stumbles at Virginia 17-3 -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

 OFFENSE STUMBLES AT VIRGINIA

Whoever made off with the Louisville Lacrosse offense against ACC foes...please return it and we won't ask any questions . A mere seven goals in three ACC games certainly isn't the way to build ip a NCAA Tournament viable resume or win games, but it seems to be the mode this team is stuck in currently.

#9 Virginia took  the opportunity to be the latest ACC school to pummel the Cards beleaguered defense, putting up 17 goals on the Cards, and playing most of the second half with a running clock, as the Cards could just get a goal each out of out of Reese Whiteman, Izzy Seikel and Cece Reilly.

The loss drops the LaxCards to 6-8 overall and 1-6 in ACC contests. with just three contests left in the regular season., Louisville chances of making the ACC Tournament are getting bleaker and bleaker...and if they did manag to finish eighht, they'd get rewarded by having to face either North Carolina or Boston College. Currently, they are in a three way tie with Notre Dame and Pitt at ninth spot..

Saturday's match vs, Virginia wasn't a pretty thing to watch, unless you happen to be a Hoos fan. The Cavs jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter, before the Cards got two goals and left the first quarter trailing 6-2.

The second quarter had UVA and Louisville trading scores, then Virginia went on a 4-0 run to end the half and take to the locker room comfortably ahead 11-3.

Although the Cards offense output was absent in the second half, UVA managed to tack on two more third quarter scores and win the fourth quarter 4-0 for the final 17-3 win.

UVA had a 38-14 shot advantage and a 29-7 shot on goal edge.

Transfer News; Saturday Schedule -- SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

WBB Adds Skylar Jones

In today's college basketball landscape, the transfer portal gives and it takes away. Earlier this week, we learned that Nyla Harris chose to depart Louisville for UNC. That one stings a bit, and it will be hard to replace her veteran leadership and heart on the team. That said, the Cards announced an incoming transfer to help bolster the scoring and experience, although not from the post.

Louisville is bringing in Skylar Jones from the University of Arizona. Jones is a 6'-0" guard from Chicago who will be a junior in the 2025-26 season. In her freshman season for the Wildcats, she was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team as an honorable mention. As a sophomore, she started 25 games and appeared in 32, averaging 10.7 points, 3 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.6 steals. Her career night came against TCU, when she dropped 30 points on Van Lith and Co. That may have been part of what caught Jeff Walz's eye, since no one other than Jayda Curry could score against the Horned Frogs for Louisville.

Jones is the first of likely multiple players that will be called on to bolster a depleted guard rotation. Louisville loses Jayda Curry, Ja'Leah Williams, and Merissah Russell to graduation and rising sophomore Izela Arenas has announced her intent to transfer. Jones joins Imari Berry and Taj Roberts as the only returning guards to see significant minutes last season, with Reagan Bender and Rebekah Graves also listed as guards on the roster.

April Showers in Louisville

If the Cards aren't on the road, I struggle to see how they'll play in any outdoor events today. As Daryl mentioned yesterday, Louisville softball announced their cancellation of today's double-header as far back as Thursday. The rain isn't set to let up here or anywhere nearby, as Louisville Metro crews were already setting flood gates yesterday afternoon and Louisville MSD announced that the city's combined sanitary/storm system was nearing capacity.

Plenty of rain, but no rainbows likely today
All that is to say that Louisville Field Hockey is still acting like they will host their spring tournament at Trager Stadium today and tomorrow. It's an astroturf field with good drainage, but this weather seems absolutely abysmal to participate in any outdoor activity in. I'm already dreading walking from my car to the indoor golf facility tomorrow. There is also lightning in the area, threatening any sports with delays. Louisville is scheduled to kick off the event at 10 AM today, so we'll see.

Lacrosse is on the road this weekend, but they're at Virginia, and I'm pretty sure Charlottesville is on this same path of weather. Their game against the top-ten Cavaliers is set for noon. The Cards are coming off of an exciting win over Liberty and would desperately like to get back into the win column in the ACC. That game will be available on ACC Network Extra.

Track and field are taking part in split events, but both are west of the Rockies, so hopefully they are spared of the sogginess. The teams are at the Jim Vargo Invitational (Stanford) and the Jim Click Shootout & Multis (Arizona). Yesterday, the Cards picked up three wins, with Ashley Callahan (pole vault) and Jayden Ulrich (discus) taking the top spot in Arizona and Lauren Bettencourt (1500m) taking gold in Stanford. Both events continue today.

Cardinal Couple NCAA Pick 'Em

Although Karen J has locked up first place, second will come down to the championship game as Thomas and Tim F are both locked at 52 points. There will be no need for a tiebreaker in this one; the two picked opposing champions. Thanks again to everyone for playing!

Softball cancels weekend double-header vs Oakland -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

FRIDAYS WITH DARYL

Good morning readers, hope youre staying dry out there.  Our house has had our work cut out for us on with these storms this week.  We've had to practice emergency situations with Lulu by putting her in the cage twice, shes not a fan but she was a good sport about it.

Softball

Speaking of sports, the Softball Cards had some schedule adjustments this week due to storms in the area.

The Battle of the Bluegrass got bumped up a couple hours on Wednesday and they had to deal with some windy conditions but were able to get a full game in.  Unfortunately, it did not go the Cards way which sucks because it was going the Cards way until it wasn't on some dumb walks to tie and then UK breaking it wide open late in the game.

Another schedule change..

The Cardinals will not play this upcoming weekend as the home contest against Oakland from Rochester, Michigan has been canceled and will not be rescheduled.

Louisville will return to action when they travel to Bloomington, Indiana to face the Hoosiers next Wednesday, April 9. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.

Side note:

Today is 4/4 and we are 4 weeks from Oaks and Derby weekend.  I'm really looking 4ward to it this year  :D

Cards Drop Battle of the Bluegrass -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Cards Can't Hold Early Lead; UK Wins 8-3

Louisville softball welcomed the University of Kentucky in a midweek matchup that was moved up in the day to try to beat the impending storms. The game was windy but dry, and it was an exciting evening of softball. Unfortunately, it turned out to be more exciting for the visiting Wildcats in the end. Louisville took the lead in the first inning and held it until the fifth before a big seventh inning blew open the tie. The Cards now move to 20-16 on the season while UK improves to 22-15.

Alyssa Zabala got the start for the Cards, opening the game with a strikeout. She gave up a four-pitch walk to follow but the Louisville defense stepped up to erase it with an inning-ending double play. That sequence would turn out to be very telling throughout the game. The Cards' defense was up to the task, but the circle proved to be an issue.

Louisville was playing without Char Lorenz, who was listed as injured following last weekend's series against Duke. The Cards shifted the order around, moving Ally Alexander, who is quietly having the best offensive season of her career, up to third. After an Easton Lotus ground out, Chelsea Mack singled and did what she does best: turned a single into a double via steal. Alexander followed with a double to give Louisville the lead, and Bri Despines very nearly made it a 3-0 game with a ball that the wind carried all the way to the fence. Despines' fly ball was caught, bringing Camryn Lookadoo to the plate with two outs. She grounded into what should have been a routine ground out, but UK's defense let their adventurous side show and airmailed the throw to first, allowing Alexander to score. The play was reviewed for Alexander leaving second early, but replay evidence was inconclusive and the run stood. A strikeout ended the inning, but Louisville led 2-0.

Zabala returned to the circle in the second and gave up a single to the dangerous Peyton Plotts. A sharp sacrifice bunt attempt could have gotten the lead runner, but Zabala panicked a bit and rushed the throw to first, putting it in the dirt where a covering Lotus couldn't reach it. Both runners advanced, and Zabala found herself in a pickle with runners on second and third and nobody out. A ground out to Lotus held the runner at second (I'm not sure why), but Plotts scored from third. The runner staying at second proved very costly for UK, as the next batter blooped a soft liner straight toward the bag. Taylor Monroe caught it on the run and her momentum carried her onto the base for the double play. Another defensive save, but UK cut the deficit to 2-1.

UK changed pitchers after just one inning, bringing in their "ace" in Sarah Haendiges. In a mid-game interview, Coach Rachel Lawson (a former UMass teammate of Holly Aprile's) indicated that it was due to Carson Fall's propensity to be a fly ball pitcher. With Despines having already proved that the ball would carry, UK didn't want to risk Louisville's limited but very real capability to get the ball over the fence. That pitching change would prove devastating for the Cards. Haendiges went on to pitch the remaining six innings and gave up just three hits with one earned run, two walks, a wild pitch, and an HBP. She struck out six.

Louisville had their chances to extend their lead, but they weren't able to capitalize in the second or third, stranding three in that time. Zabala, meanwhile, appeared to have settled in with a 1-2-3 third inning, but the Cardinal defense had to step up again in the fourth to help her navigate a lead-off walk and a sacrifice to move the tying run into scoring position. Aprile chose to (un)intentionally walk Plotts to fill the open spot at first and a fielder's choice was followed by a pop out to end the inning. It looked like it would be a quick bottom half for Louisville after a fly out and a foul out, but Monroe sent a no-doubter to left field to extend the lead to 3-1.

The pitching woes came home to roost in the fifth, with Zabala giving up back-to-back singles before being replaced by Sam Booe. Booe picked up a strikeout to open her slate and it appeared that she'd be able to skate out of the jam as she has so many times before. Louisville's defense was primed behind her, having turned multiple double plays, but Booe took the ball out of their hands. Literally. A full-count walk loaded the bases before Booe issued a four-pitch walk to a freshman to score a run. Sam settled down and picked up a strikeout, but her two walks set up a situation nobody wants: Peyton Plotts to the plate with the bases loaded. Booe pitched well to the corners, but the eighth pitch of the at-bat was ruled just wide, and Plotts walked in the tying run. Lindsey Mullen came on to relieve Booe and got a fly out to center to end the inning.

Softball is a game of momentum, and despite Louisville's home run, UK had just done a good job of seizing ol' Uncle Mo. If the two walked-in runs to tie the game didn't do it, the 1-2-3 bottom of the inning, which consisted of the 2-3-4 batters in the Cardinal order, did. Mullen returned in the sixth and pitched a strong inning to keep Louisville in the driver's seat as the home team, she gave up a walk with one out, but UK didn't really threaten and it was still tied going into the bottom of the sixth. Remember that momentum? Well there isn't much more to build it than a three-strikeout inning. Louisville split the strikeouts with a walk, and the game was stilted a bit by a long interference discussion, but the result was the same. Louisville sent four batters to the plate and three of them went down without putting the bat on the ball.

That set up the ultimate showdown: final inning, tie game, rivalry, trying to beat a storm. Kentucky stepped up to the moment. A bunt single that just happened to die in the dirt going up the first base line caught Louisville off guard and put the go ahead run on base. Louisville was right when they anticipated a sacrifice, but too many players got excited to make a play. Four Cardinals converged on the bunted ball, and Despines had no throw to first as the other three fielders crowded around her. Two on, nobody out. Uh-oh. Another sacrifice attempt nearly resulted in the exact same thing, but Despines made the throw this time to get an out, but both runners moved into scoring position. Aprile made the wise call to, again, put Plotts on first base, but UK scored the go-ahead run on the next pitch. It got away from Mullen and went straight into the batter's box for an easily taken HBP off the elbow guard. A pinch hitter knocked a bloop single into centerfield, scoring another run and keeping the bases loaded with just one out.

Zabala returned to the circle and got a ground out that Monroe smartly fired home to get the force and keep the UK lead at 5-3. The next pitch sealed the game, though, as it was lifted high to left, and Zabala clearly thought it was headed out of the park right off the bat. It didn't quite have the juice, but the wind made it just strong enough to fall beyond the outstretched glove of a diving Lookadoo in left center. With two outs, everyone was running, and the triple cleared the bases. A walk ended Zabala's day and Brooke Gray entered to pitch. Gray got a free out when the runner from first left early, and the Cards headed to their final chance down 8-3.

It was a great spot in the Louisville order, with 9-1-2 due up, but a Monroe ground out was followed by a strikeout from Lotus that capped her unfortunately timed 0-4 day. Chelsea Mack singled up the middle with two strikes, but the rally wasn't on. Alexander lifted a soft fly ball to left and that was that.

Louisville pitching issued ten free bases. Nine walks and a hit-by-pitch. UK could have won the game without picking up a single hit with runners in scoring position, as their first four runs came on a ground out RBI and three bases-loaded free passes. That's not good. I don't have much else to say on that.

The Cards are on a conference bye week this week, so instead of a three-game series, they'll play a double header against Oakland on Saturday (weather permitting). Louisville will then head to Bloomington for another regional rivalry in next week's midweek outing. The Cards will hope to get the aftertaste of this ugly game out of their mouths and get some more wins under their belts in both non-conference and conference play.

Lax Gets Back on Win streak defeating Liberty 12-10 -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Whiteman's four goals lead LaxCards to win

Reese Whiteman tallied four goals and seven Cards scored in the Tuesday afternoon win over Liberty at the L.L.S. Tuesday afternoon.

The step out of conference play was beneficial for Scott Teeter's squad, and the Cards improved to 6-7 on the season with the win.

The Cards jumped out to a 2-0 lead to start the contest, Whiteman getting her first goal about four minutes into  the match and Izzy Seikel adding the second score about a minutes later.  After a Flames score,  Rian Adkins found the back of the net and her goal gave the Cards a 3-1 lead that held through the first quarter.

The Cards went up 5-2 in the second after goals from Whiteman and Erin Nicholson. Liberty went on a  a rally, though, and scored the final two goals of the second quarter to trail by just one at the half...5-4.

After the break, the Cards scored just 86 seconds into third quarter play, but Liberty countered a couple of minutes later. to make it 6-5 Cards. Ryan McMahon's goal gave UofL a 7-5 lead, but the Liberty squad went on a three-goal barrage to grab a 8-7 lead over the Cards. Whiteman went to work, however, and tallied back-to-back goals to push Louisville back ahead 9-8. Liberty added a goal as the quarter ended i and this one was 9-9 going into the final quarter.

Both team scored four minutes into the fourth quarter to keep the affair deadlocked at 10-10.  It turned out to be Liberty's last score. With almost nine minutes gone the final frame, Izzy Seikel produced the game winner...and Lauren Figas added an insurance goal 90 seconds later for the Cards to end the scoring in the contest.

A hard fought 12-10 win for UofL.  Scott Teeter on the contest:

"I thought today was a really intense, tough lacrosse game. I though both teams played very physical....with a lot of aggression and a lot of pressure. You didn't have much time to move or think out there, and that led to turnovers. We made some adjustments at halftime and put some things together. Starting with the draw controls in the second half, we fixed our clearing game a little bit and that led to more offensive possessions which led to more shots. We mad enough plays to win the game today."

The Cards return to conference play for their next one, with a contest at Virginia on Saturday.

Lacrosse Hosts Liberty -- Tennis Beats Virginia Tech -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Lacrosse Hosts Liberty

Louisville lacrosse looks to bounce back from a loss with a midweek game against Liberty today. The Cards and Flames will square off at noon at the Louisville Lacrosse Stadium.

The Cards enter the match 5-7 on the year and 1-5 in the ACC. Fortunately, they are able to step away from conference play momentarily.

Liberty has had a hot start to the season with an 8-3 record. All three losses came against ACC teams (20-5 to Virginia, 23-1 to North Carolina, and 15-6 against Pittsburgh). They do have a win against then-ranked Richmond by one. Most recently, the Flames defeated Queens University 18-17 with the winning goal coming with five minutes left in regulation.

Louisville won the only meeting between the two teams last season 11-8 on the road. The Cards held a one-goal lead entering the fourth quarter before pulling away.

Women's Tennis Upsets Virginia Tech

Louisville women’s tennis earned a major win over the weekend, taking down #37 Virginia Tech 4-0. The win improves the Cards’ record to 10-7 on the year and 2-6 in the ACC. This is the first ranked win in nearly two years for the Cards.

The last time Louisville hit the 10-win mark was the 2022-2023 season. They have only hit the 10-win mark three times since the 2018-2019 season. The two conference wins is the most for the Cards since the 2020-2021 season when they went 3-10 in the ACC. Louisville has never surpassed three conference wins since joining the ACC.

In collegiate tennis, teams play a best-of-seven score. Despite a trio of doubles matches, only one doubles point is awarded. The other six points are determined in the individual matches.

The Cards took the doubles point after the teams of Berta Miret / Lika Peresypkina and Alice Otis / Allie Gretkowski won. The Cards won the first three singles matches with Gretowski, Elena Noguero, and Elisabeth Lila.

The Cards are back in action against ranked Georgia Tech on Friday at 4:00pm.

NCAA Pick 'Em Update

We're down to the final four, so there are just a few more points on offer. The race for second is still close, but Karen J has locked up first place as she holds a three point lead. Tim F and Thomas both need South Carolina to beat Texas to challenge Karen's score, but a South Carolina victory would clinch the win for Karen J by giving her another point.

Happy Tuesday and Go Cards!
