Our RPI took too much of a beating in early non-conference play and not a good enough conference slate to make up for it.

Stay tuned, though, the team is playing pretty well, and so could make a good run, but even better years are ahead of us.JMcAhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00440193885039741934noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8945676324950180664.post-50742656122305540552013-11-28T20:12:46.630-05:002013-11-28T20:12:46.630-05:00volleyball have any chance of a host in the ncaa? ...volleyball have any chance of a host in the ncaa? fans would like to see this and ul volleyball draws well right?

volleyball fan Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8945676324950180664.post-9135292366039123592013-11-28T13:53:08.734-05:002013-11-28T13:53:08.734-05:00I was, indeed, at the UofL vs UConn volleyball mat...I was, indeed, at the UofL vs UConn volleyball match last night.

A rough start for the Cards with lots of enforced errors, including a large handful of serving errors in the first set. Despite the errors, and only hitting .179 in the first set, they were able to pull out the win.

Not so much in the second set, with only .098 hitting(!) UConn picks up the set.

I'm not sure what Anne Kordes said to the team during the set break, but I hope she bottled some of it! The team came out and hit .692 in the third set. I'm not sure I've ever seen that high of hitting for a whole team in a set. They cooled off a little in the 4th in getting the win by "only" hitting .345, which is, of course, still pretty impressive for a team number.

Clearly, in the overall, Louisville plays a higher caliber of volleyball than UConn does, but to their credit, they are a team that doesn't ever give up.

Other highlights were 25 digs for Caitlin Welch as well as chalking up another kill. We almost had a play with a kill by Caitlin Welch where the assist would've got to Brooke Mattingly...that one would've been a lot of fun to write up, but alas the ball didn't drop on UConn's side.

Emily Juhl really is playing well in general right now. She had a serve where the crowd audibly gasped. She did sail one or two high, but that's the sort of thing you get with a high-risk high-reward sort of serve like she has (think Shoni Schimmel's passing and you get the idea...just without the flashiness).

One play that I really wanted to comment on was really great. Katie George with a quick set to the middle. Randi Ewing going up for the swing and drawing all of the middle blocking to her, but then the ball is hit...I should say *pounded*...by Janelle Jenkins running up the middle as well. The UConn defense and blocking was totally befuddled as was most of the crowd, including myself as I didn't see that coming at all either.

The last match of the season is tomorrow (Friday) at 3pm vs Rutgers at Cardinal Arena.JMcAhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00440193885039741934noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8945676324950180664.post-37946188157113521242013-11-28T12:28:50.597-05:002013-11-28T12:28:50.597-05:00Agreed. If Bria can consistently hit that mid-range jumper she's going to be tough to stop this year. With the exception of Shoni most of the starters were "off" a bit against Florida. Good to see that turned around. They need to be confident going into Sunday.

I thought Walz's comments were spot on. Need to test different combinations on the floor to figure out what works best. I guess that's the mixed blessing of having so many players that can actually play. It's great because he has tons of options but those options also limit the time the different combos get to play together.

I think the fact that we're 7-0 and everyone has contributed at some level in at least one game this year is great. Now we'll see if we can turn it up a notch vs. Kentucky. So did Dyer (7 points). There is tons of talent on the bench but a WKU fan asked me why Walz started pulling players with an 18-2 lead and on the verge of blowing WKU out of the gym.

Only Coach can answer that...and we're not going to question his substitution strategies...and I told the fan that Walz is eight deep on the bench in talent once you get past the starters. Gibbs, Dyer, Jude, Emmonnie, Monny, Megan, Cortnee and Starr could go about anywhere else in the country and be instant starters.

Some nights...people have off games. I like the strength in numbers. It's like experimenting with martini recipies I guess...sometimes you get a great product and other times...not so great.
PaulieCardinal Couplehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10565155435705858363noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8945676324950180664.post-89646736343679571232013-11-28T07:56:26.152-05:002013-11-28T07:56:26.152-05:00If they make 25 turnovers (many unforced) Sunday a...If they make 25 turnovers (many unforced) Sunday at UK they lose by 20. There were two positive takeaways for me. For the second game in a row, Bria Smith knocked down perimeter shots - she is shooting with confidence. And Emmonnie Henderson continues to impress me. I wondered about Walz's substitutions at times, but he's the man and I'll leave those decisions up to him.Mike Dnoreply@blogger.com
