Saturday Cardinal Couple - .500 for the day

Field Hockey

Field Hockey is wrapping up their season this weekend and needs to win out to preserve their RPI standings to get into the NCAA tournament.

Michigan State came to visit Trager stadium and UofL got the job done. Nicole Woods, who is playing like she's on a mission, got The Cards on the board early about five and a half minutes into the game, her eighth goal of the season. The Spartans responded about five minutes later to get their only score of the game.

UofL picked up another two goals before the half, one at 20 minutes into the game, where Tess Hannah got her fifth goal of the season with assists to Megan Anstotz, and Erin McCrudden. McCrudden got her third goal of the season with only two and a half minutes left in the half. The Cards took a 3-1 lead into the break.

In the second half, Vic Stratton got her fourth goal of the season with assists to Katherine Gwynne-Wood and Megan Anstotz. Vic, as a defender, usually only scores on penalty corners, with this one being no exception. The Cards finished scoring with a fifth goal on another corner with Katherine Gwynne-Wood getting it into the cage with an assist to Chili Garcia with only 10 minutes left in the game.

Field Hockey finishes out their season, with Senior Day this Sunday against Rutgers at noon.

Volleyball

Volleyball took their first ACC loss to UNC in Chapel Hill 3-1. They came out playing solidly, against once of the best blocking teams in the country, and took the first set 25-18, but then the wheels fell off with set scores 11-25, 22-25, 22-25.

The UNC blocking started to take it's toll with the Cards racking up lots of hitting errors in the rest of the sets. The second set brought eight hitting errors, which cooled the Card's hitting from the first set's .326 down to -.069. The third set brought more of the same, with nine hitting errors, and .111 hitting percentage. The fourth set also had a number of hitting errors for UofL, but the hitting percentage went up slightly to .133, but the slight climb was more than offset by seven service errors.

The Cards were led by Erin Fairs with 14 kills and seven digs, Janelle Jenkins probably had the best all-around match with 13 kills and 19 digs. Multi-Freshman-of-the-Week Aniah Philo got 10 kills, but narrowly missed out on another double-double with 8 digs.

UNC showed why they are among the best blocking teams in the country with 11 blocks. UofL did fairly well at the net, particularly as undersized as they are as a team, with five blocks.

Volleyball looks to get back to the winning ways at NC State on Sunday with a 2 PM first serve.

Full Friday for UofL women's sports -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

FRIDAY FIELD HOCKEY AND VOLLEYBALL

It is another event day where the Louisville Volleyball and Field Hockey squads will be taking their respective fields of battle at the same time today. Field Hockey defends Trager against Spartie tonight at 6 p.m. while Volleyball has Carolina on their mind in Chapel Hill at the dinner hour.

Add in football at 7 p.m. in Winston-Salem and it adds up to a full Friday of UofL Athletics. Sprinkle in Breeders Cup and you have a fun festival of sporting events.

FIELD HOCKEY HOSTS MSU

The #9 Cards host a Michigan State team that has struggled this season (5-12) and recently got dusted by the Ann Arbor bunch 5-0 but Justine Sowry takes no opponent lightly.

The Cards (11-5) are led offensively with Nicole Woods and Stephanie Byrne with seven goals each...but it's been a community effort this year in getting the ball into the net with 10 players getting scores and eight of them with two or more. Back in the net, freshman Ayeisha McFerran has tended to eight shutouts in 16 games and has a 1.15 goals against average number.

Wins are important for the Stick Cards in the final two before ACC Tournament Play at Virginia. A high RPI will bode well in securing a 1st round home game in the NCAA Tournament. Louisville will face North Carolina in the ACC Tournament and a upset victory there as well would help Louisville stay in Trager to march towards a national championship.

Kudos also to Elisa "Chile" Garcia and Vic Stratton who have been selected to play in the NFHCA Senior Game November 21st. at the University of Michigan.

(Take sweatshirts and leggings...Ann Arbor gets a bit chilly in late November.)

VOLLEYBALL LOOKS TO STAY UNDEFEATED IN ACC

Our "missing the action" correspondent Jeff "Worldwide" McAdams wouldn't commit to how many more games in-a-row #23 Louisville Volleyball might run off (the win streak sits currently at 10) but UNC will be a challenging test for Anne Kordes' wide-net wallopers.

The Tar Heels are 11-8, 8-2 and boast a three-game win streak of their own...knocking off Miami, Ga. Tech and Clemson recently.

UNC also put the kabosh on Louisville last year in the KFC YUM! Center with a 3-1 match advantage...winning the final two games in nail-biting 27-25, 26-24 fashion.

You can witness this one on GoHeels TV at 6 p.m. The link below should get you there

WBB: Jackson and Weatherford -- New schools, new motivations. THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

"TRANSFERS" HAVE BEEN HERE AWHILE

When Louisville women's basketball play-by-play announcer Matt Andrews took the podium the Louisville WBB luncheon and read the names Briahanna Jackson and Dakota Weatherford along with the rest of the 2015-16 Louisville WBB squad...more than a few people were surprised about these newest additions to the roster.

CARDINAL COUPLE got a chance to talk to both (aided by interviewer-in-training Arica Carter at the UofL WBB Media Day Tuesday and we'll have those interviews on our radio show...THE CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO HOUR...which airs at 11 a.m. Saturday mornings on WCHQ 100.9 FM and on the internet at www.crescenthillradio.com

( We'd do more radio, mind you. Howie Lindsey gives us seven minutes a week. 93.9 "The Ville" doesn't return our calls when we ask about the possibility of a show once a week to talk about the joy and excitement of UofL women's sports.)

I guess those obnoxious talking heads on ESPN have more appeal.

Let's look a little further into the two newest Walzian lab assistants.

B.J. TOOK A DARE...ACC BEWARE

Briahanna Jackson was tearing up the AAC at Central Florida in her year and one half stay there. She felt there was something better out there, though. Let's face it...we don't think of UCF as a perennial powerhouse in Division I WBB. She knew she had game. First team Freshman honors in the AAC. 28 points against UConn in her final game of her sophomore season.

She wanted to take that game, those skills to a place where she could contribute them toward a team effort focused on a run at a national title. She wanted to be at a school where there was hope and a promising future.

She contacted Louisville. There was interest. Coach Walz remembered the 21 points she lit up against Louisville in Puerto Vallarta in November 2012. The Cards guards (Bria, Shoni, Megan, Shelby and Jude) couldn't contain her.

B.J. came to campus. She liked what she saw. She met with Walz and agreed to the timetable and requirements in place to get her on the roster. She accepted the challenged, took the dare and moved to Louisville.

In that 18 month interim between arrival and joining the roster, she honed her skills and learned more about the Louisville game. She is not a social media butterfly...not filling Twitter, Facebook or Instagram full of her daily exploits. Instead...she put on her headband, laced up her Adidas one at at time and went to work.

Actions speak louder than words

Her teammates love her ability to create, score and defend.
She carries on a comfortable, easy and spontaneous patter with them. They are one. She is here and ready to help. She and Dakota have a close bond. They got here the same way.

DAKOTA TRAVELED EAST AND IS NOW AT PEACE

Dakota Weatherford started turning heads in high school. Not totally because of her stunning looks...but because she was taking Hamilton Heights to the Indiana State 3A Champonship in March 2013. Those skills were honed in the small town of Arcadia...a stop on US 19 North after leaving Noblesville.

The Weatherford's had the only basketball goal in the neighborhood...so the driveway was full of kids taking shots. Dakota was one one them, playing against the boys.
It helped the 5'6" guard develop her high, arching shot to prevent her attempts from getting blocked.

The Indiana All-Star left her small town for the small, compact University of Evansville campus. The skills were still there but the chemistry and playing time weren't. She started 26 of the 31 games the 15-16 Purple Aces played in 2013-14. She led the team in assists and steals. She was third in scoring. A starting point guard competing in the MVC.

After a year as a Purple Ace...she decided to attend Louisville in 2014-15 and concentrate on studies instead of hoops. She liked the big city feel of Louisville and the vibrant campus. She was also less than two hours from Arcadia.

About a month ago, someone told Jeff Walz she was on campus. Walz remembered the little guard with the quick hands and feet and asked her if she had any interest re-connecting with the game as a UofL WBB walk-on. She jumped at the chance.

She went on scholarship Tuesday. Walz beamed when he told the story of the walk-on who was always early for practice, did whatever the coaches needed and displayed off-the-charts hustle and determination.

TWO STORIES, ONE ENDING

Two people, from different backgrounds but same reasons for leaving places where they had found success. One who asked to come and be a part...and one who came and then was asked to be a part.

Sometimes, there is something else out there...bigger and brighter...and all you have to do is go look for it. Sometimes, the path is not easy. The wait, the anticipation becomes lengthy. There are setbacks on the road to redemption. There are detours getting to the destination.

Briahanna Jackson and Dakota Weatherford saw the rainbow and followed it to the end...which, in this case... is UofL WBB. They're frolicking with the other Belknap leprechauns and have their eyes on the ultimate.

The Pot O' Gold.

The NCAA Championship.

Louisville Women's Basketball Media Day -- The sights and sounds....WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

WALZ: "I think you're really going to like this year's team".

Jeff Walz talked to members of the media Tuesday and discussed his 2015-16 version of Louisville women's basketball. See the 21-minute long video below. It's got some great content and a few surprises as well.

JEFF WALZ DISCUSSES UPCOMING TEAM, SEASON

Some of the highlights:

- Dakota Weatherford will be on full scholarship.
The walk-on transfer from Evansville has earned it, according to Walz for her hustle, effort and drive.

- Coach wasn't "hiding" B.J." (Briahanna Jackson.)
"If you'd come to any of our practices, you'd seen her out there. Some kids just don't share everything on social media like others do. She's been here a year and a half now and she's going to be a major contributor."

- Asia Durr "70-75%".
She's showing the skills that got her here. The dynamic part isn't quite there yet, because of the injury...but it will be. Even with out it, she's still better that 90% of the players out there and will continue to improve. I just want her to go hard when she's on the floor.

PAULIE CHATS WITH CORTNEE AND ERIN
( photo COURTESY OF CHARLIE SPRINGER)
And, so it was...for the annual State of The Cardinals preseason report and a chance to talk to the players. And talk...we did...recording over 24 minutes of audio from nine different members of the team.

You can hear it all on the Saturday edition of CARDINAL COUPLE. Some teasers:

-- What happened in the elevator when Myisha Hines-Allen, Mariya Moore and B.J. were riding it?

-- What animal did Erin De Grate describe Cortnee Walton as and how did Cortnee respond?

-- Which two WBB players have promising careers ahead of them as interviewers?

-- Who is the better "ankle-breaker" on the court? B.J. or Arica Carter?

-- How Dakota Weatherford ended up at Louisville and why she did?

All that and more on the show Saturday.

A delightful group of intelligent young women to interview and they had a lot of fun with Paulie's un-orthodox style of doing the "Q's and A's".

There's a common theme among the girls and it is to win a national championship.  It was very evident, not only in their comments...but in the way they practice and hustle.

Media Day...some early nerves and "deer-in-the-headlight" looks...but, as Sam Purcell told me...they love events like this and look forward to them.

Coach Walz is dead on...I think everyone is going to like this team very much this season, too. And, they're going to be a blast to interview for the next five months, too...

Call her Aniah "Tri-lo" ? -- Tuesday CARDINAL COUPLE

CARDS OUTSIDE-HITTER SELECTED ACC FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK FOR THIRD TIME

For the third consecutive week, the VolleyCards freshman outside hitter Aniah Philo has been named the ACC Freshman of the Week after her performances against Notre Dame and Virginia.

Just call her Aniah Trilo.

Philo got her fourth double-double of the season against the Irish when she produced 13 kills and 12 digs. Several days later, "Tri-lo" contributed eight kills, nine digs and six blocks against the Cavaliers. Her hitting average was .319 for the week in Louisville's straight-set thumping of the opposition.

She also put a big smile on the face of Louisville Volleyball head coach Anne Kordes with the stats. Kordes talks about her consistency and resiliency:

...For instance, if she gets blocked or, you know, she gets aced, I’m not worried about the very next ball either getting set to her or the next serve coming at her, She doesn’t have a funk. I actually don’t know if she remembers that it happened, so that’s kind of the fun part, you know, she just plays...

Previous to Philo's streak, Anna Walsh...a Virginia middle-hitter had taken Freshman of the Week honors for three consecutive weeks. Walsh and Philo played club ball on the same team in Texas and catching Walsh was one of Philo's driving points.

Philo is also mindful that the continued success requires continued hard work.

...You have to work hard for it. Someone can come in and take your position at any time...

Just as Philo replaced previous starter Maya McClendon...who led the team in kills last season.

The question is...if Aniah wins the award for a fourth time this season....do we call her Aniah Quad-lo?

Field Hockey, WSOC record shutouts on Sunday -- MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Sunday women's sports for UofL produced two shutouts...the Field Hockey team downing the Chippewas from Central Michigan 3-0 and Women's Soccer taking to the road to get a 1-0 blanking of North Carolina State.

DEFENSE RULES THE DAY IN TRAGER

The Cards couldn't have been too anxious about 1-15 Central Michigan coming for a Sunday visit...but the guests gave Louisville a tough battle in the first half of this non-conference contest...keeping Louisville off the board in a scoreless first half.

Not that the Cards didn't have a wealth of opportunities to put numbers in place of zeros on the scoreboard....Louisville outshot CMU 13-0 and had a 8-1 edge on corners in the first 35 minutes...but the Chippewa defense was holding.

Whatever Coach Justine Sowry said or stratagized during the break had an effect. Louisville scored just five minutes into final half action when Tess Hannah took a Chile Garcia inbounds on a penalty corner and the freshman connected to give UofL a 1-0 lead.

Louisville kept the offense pressure up and it paid off again with 18 minutes remaining in play. Another penalty corner that had Hannah providing the inbounds set to sophomore Nicole Woods...who placed her seventh goal of the year into the net to put Louisville up by two.

The UofL defense continued to stymie the visitors. Louisville added a third score with 2:07 left on another penalty corner...Erin McCrudden knocking home a feed from Garcia.

UofL (11-5) had 26 shots in the contest, compared to CMU's two. Goalie Ayeisha McFerran gets her eight shutout of the season while recording two saves. The Cards had 21 corner opportunities...the Chippewas two.

Next up is Spartie...Michigan State comes to town for a Friday, Oct 30th. match that'll begin at 1 p.m.

#################################################

KICKIN' CARDS SHUT OUT THE WOLFPACK

Faced with the prospect of being on the road, being mathematically eliminated from the ACC Tournament and needing two wins to end the season to keep any NCAA Tournament hopes alive...Louisville women's soccer responded with a 1-0 win over North Carolina State Sunday in Raleigh, NC.

Freshman Jill Vetere provided the lone score in the ACC contest...following up on a Rachel Avant shot attempt and sending in into the net from about 20 yards out in the 26th. minute of the first half.

Louisville kept the offensive pressure up to start the second half and had several shot attempts go wide...the defense kept NC State at bay the final 45 minutes and the Cards take a hard-fought win on the road to improve to 8-7-2 and 4-4-1 in the ACC.

Taylor Bucklin picked up five saves in the match and gets her fifth shutout of the season. The Cards won the statistics battle with 12 shots to NC State's 10 and a 4-2 corner kick advantage.

Karen Ferguson-Dayes squad finishes the regular season on Halloween night in Winston-Salem, NC for a 7 p.m. match against Wake Forest. Louisville is in eighth place in the ACC...which is considered the strongest conference in women's soccer...and a win against cellar-dweller Wake Forest might be the difference between getting an NCAA at-large bid or ending their season.

############################################

GOLF TIED FOR FOURTH AFTER DAY ONE

The University of Louisville women's golf team is tied for fourth in the standings after the first day of competition at the Palmetto Intercollegiate in Kiawah Island, S.C.

The Cardinals compiled a 2-over-par 290 through 18 holes of play despite a slow start on the front nine and trail the overall leader Campbell by four strokes. All teams return to the Turtle Point Golf Course for the second round today at 8:30 a.m. ET, teeing off on hole No. 1.

Seniors Laura Restrepo and Katie Mitchell carried Louisville on Sunday, and both are tied for 11th on the individual leaderboard after carding a 1-under-par 71. Both finished their first nine holes at 1-under-par and capped the day with three birdies apiece. It is Restrepo's third round even or below par this year and the fourth for Mitchell.

Volleyball gets another sweep at Virginia -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

LOUISVILLE REMAINS UNDEFEATED IN ACC

Any worries that the Cards would get knocked out of the driver's seat on the road in ACC Volleyball were laid to rest last night when the Louisville Volleyball team swept the Virginia Cavaliers 25-22, 25-12, 25-21 in Charlottesville.

The straight sets win pushes the Cards record to 11-0 in the ACC and 15-4 overall. It was also the seventh straight match that Louisville has taken down the opponent in three straight games. The last team to take a game from the Cards was Syracuse...back on Oct. 2nd.

It was a balanced scoring effort out of Anne Kordes' crew. Janelle Jenkins had 12 kills for UofL, Erin Fairs and Aniah Philo added eight each and Philo also had six blocks.

The first contest was a back and forth test...with ten tied scores before Louisville broke a 21 all score with two Philo blocks at the net, a Maggie DeJong kill and Jenkins serving ace to get the win.

Game two was all Cards after a close early start. The teams were tied at nine when UofL went on a 9-0 run to take command. After a UVA timeout, Molly Sauer served up four straight points...including two aces to give Louisville the 13-point win.

After the break, UVA came back unwilling to let Louisville walk over them again. The Cavs went on a 5-3 scoring run to lead 17-15 and force a Cardinal timeout. The Cards, thanks in part to Lyndsay Palmer's clutch serving, came back to lead 23-21 and took game, set and match when UVA committed two straight service errors.

Louisville will enjoy a few days off before heading to North Carolina on Friday, Oct. 30th and NC State Sunday Nov.1st

Sonya, Christy and Sara Enter Louisville Hall of Fame -- SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

WHAT? NO GAME RECAPS TODAY?

It seems weird to be sitting down in front of the computer on a Saturday morning and not writing an introductory paragraph about how one of the UofL women's sports teams fared last night.

The truth is...no volleyball, soccer or field hockey took place for the Cards last night. They'll all be active this weekend, though...and we'll cover it all for you here at CARDINAL COUPLE.

What did happen last night was six outstanding athletes were inducted into the UofL Athletics Hall of Fame and three of them were women. We'll let the achievements of Deion Branch, Herb Crook and Mark Jurich stand by themselves...they were excellent at their respective sports...and look at newest members Sara Nord, Sonya Gubaidulina Karmazin and Christy Hershey Allman.

Nord played hoops for the Cards from 2000-04 and is the all-time leader in assists. She is second in career steals and third in career three pointers. Sara was a Miss Indiana Basketball awardee during her time at Jeffersonville High School and earned freshman All-American honors in 2001. A four-time C-USA First team selection...Nord's jersey hangs above the court in the KFC YUM! Center.

Sonya worked her magic on the volleyball court from 1996-98 and was a ferocious outside-hitter. From Moscow, Russia...she was the 1998 C-USA Player of the year and league tournament MVP. She ranks ninth in career kills at UofL. The Cards won the league title all three years she played here.

Hershey was the first ever UofL Field Hockey All-American in 2001. Maybe the best goalie to ever play for Louisville...she had 25 shutouts in her four years on the field. A three-time MAC Conference first team selection, she was on the first ever Louisville Field Hockey squad to play in the NCAA Tournament (2003).

Congratulations to these three superstars!
